Corpse Party (2008)

Corpse Party: BloodCovered, released outside of Japan as just Corpse Party, is a JRPG that follows the story of a group of students and a teacher as they perform an occult friendship ritual (found on the internet of all places) called "Sachiko Ever After", which promises would make them friends for all eternity...

But they do it incorrectly and fall inside instead to the most unpleasant place they've ever seen. A corpse party if you will.

Sub-Pages#

Unused Graphics#

An unused configuration banner found in system_graphic.bcx in the Steam release called config.png. This image was most likely meant to be used for a separate configuration application like the original Japanese release, but since there are in-game settings, this image is left unused. Interestingly, the banner uses the logo introduced in Corpse Party: BloodCovered...Repeated Fear rather than the English logo introduced in the Steam version of this game.

Found in system_graphic.bcx in the Steam release, called font2.png. While this font is shown in the original Japanese version (for the copyright on the title screen), this file isn't used for it, meaning it goes unused in both versions.

An unused tileset from Corpse Party: NewChapter, the remake Corpse Party: BloodCovered is based on, found in the mapchip folder of Corpse Party: BloodCovered 3.

An unused tileset of a "feeld" found in the system_graphic folder of Corpse Party: BloodCovered 1 dated August 11, 2007, four months before the game's release on December 31, 2007 at Comiket 73.

Unused (Trial)

Used (BC5)

Old skip graphic found in the system_graphic folder of the free trial (based on Corpse Party: BloodCovered 4). The skip feature wasn't implemented till Corpse Party: BloodCovered 5, leaving this graphic unused.

Free trial end screen found in the system_graphic folder of Corpse Party BloodCovered 4, which is also the basis for the free trial.

Kanji Graphics#

These graphics are found in several .bcx files of the Steam/GOG release. While their .bmp counterparts are used in the Japanese version, they go unused in the international releases.

Missing Music Files#

If one extracts the audio files from the Steam or GOG version's files, it can be seen that the majority of audio tracks for music and ambient sounds in the game are named "CORP-PC-###.ogg", with the ###'s being replaced with the track's number (e.g. CORP-PC-001, CORP-PC-003, CORP-PC-051, etc.). Certain file names also have suffixes attached, for instance "CORP-PC-069-EX" to indicate it's for use in an EXtra chapter, or "CORP-PC-063-PSP" which presumably indicates it was taken directly from the PSP version of the game.

Interestingly, numerous numbers in the audio tracks were skipped over, indicating that there may have been many songs that were ultimately cut at some point in development. Where these songs would have been used or what they would've sounded like is unknown. The skipped numbers for music tracks include 002, 021, 027, 030, 031, 032, 037, 040, 058, and 062, with the 069 being the last song in the normal numbered song list. Additionally, after track 069, numbers 70 to 100 are skipped with the final numbered track being CORP-PC-101.ogg (being one of the many ambient tracks and not actual music).

Unused Script#

An unused script named SCRIPT_MAP_copy.dat can be found in the Chapter 1 files of BloodCovered 5 and the Steam/GOG release.

Regional Differences#

Corpse Party has some small but noticeable changes across the Japanese and international releases.

Title Screen#

Japan

International

You may have noticed the Japanese title screen using the font shown above (font2.png), but the texts using the font are actually contained in title_chap1.tga. The English version also expands the text at the bottom to include "Licensed to and published by XSEED Games / Marvelous USA, Inc.", and since the international release is simply known as Corpse Party, the logo replaces BloodCovered with the Japanese title.

Location Name Popup#

Japan

International

In the Japanese version, the game lets you know where you are via textbox. In international releases, the game shows you the name of your location at the top-left corner of the screen. The names are stored in each chapter's .bcx file in a folder called bitmap. The Japanese release also has a bitmap folder in each chapter's folder, but it's empty. This could suggest that these pop-ups were going to be in the Japanese release, but were cut for unknown reasons. Interestingly, a patch for Corpse Party: Blood Covered 5 made after the release of Corpse Party: Book of Shadows did implement these popups, but oddly enough, they were implemented only in Chapters 3 to 5, and Extra Chapters Meeting of the Minds and Tooth.
