Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (Wii)

Unused Events#

While there are not as many unused events this time around compared to its summer counterpart, it still hosts quite a fair bit of references to planned events that didn't make the final cut.

Dream Speed Skating (City Escape)#

Dream Speed Skating is the most complete out of the unused events. Pretty much everything related to this event is left intact in the game's files, except for the environment the event takes place in. The controller for the event exists in the files as rso/SportsSpeedDream.rso, but attempting to load it crashes the game.

Vehicles#

An assortment of cars and trucks that would have been used in the event.

Character Models#

Dream Speed Skating would have been one of the events to call on its own specific character models. However, only four of these files are intact; as this event would have supported four simultaneous players, these models likely existed to make playtesting possible during development. The available characters are Mario, Sonic, Bowser, and (more confusingly) Vector. The files can be found in character/skate_D, though they are strangely excluded from the character viewer; editing them in reveals a few unique animations. These include the character performing a stunt (likely by jumping off a ramp), being launched through the air after taking damage, sliding to a stop, and turning with one's hand on the ground similarly to the Short Track event, alongside the normal Speed Skating animations.

Other Unused Events#

In addition to Dream Speed Skating, four other events were supposed to make the cut, but were scrapped entirely. No remnants of these events still reside in the game's filesystem.

In lua/sequence/OneMatch.lua resides a list of every event that can be selected. Among the entries are...

Internal Event Name

FigureSkatePairs

MiniSnowmobileRace

MiniRafting

MiniHangGlider

Note that Dream Gliding is referred to internally as MiniHangGliderDream, so it is unknown if MiniHangGlider is supposed to be a regular Olympic event (even though Hang Gliding is not an actual Winter Olympic Event), or if it is an unused variant of Dream Gliding.

Unknown Test Controllers#

Also present among the events in rso/ are Racjin15Test.rso and TakataTest.rso. Replacing an event with either of these causes the loading screen to hang indefinitely. Considering the names of the files, they were likely created as tests; what exactly they were supposed to test is unknown.

Unused Character Viewer#

Watch on YouTube

A character viewer can be found in the game. It is controlled by the file CharacterViewer.rso, found in /rso.

It includes many options to view the character models and animations, along with many additional settings. For example, there is an option that renders a ball that characters can look at, another option to move the character alongside a grid (which can be manipulated in various ways), etc.
When selecting an option press B (or sometimes +) to go back to the previous menu.

To access this menu, the aforementioned .rso file must be replaced with another used one. For example, replacing said file with "Town.rso" under the same directory will make this menu appear when selecting the "Shopping" option in the main menu.

Unused Maps#

Test Map#

Watch on YouTube

The test map that first appeared in the files for the E3 2003 demo of Sonic Heroes and later appeared in the files of the retail releases of Shadow the Hedgehog and NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams makes its final appearance here. It can be be found in /sample/level00.

Unused Graphics#

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Leftovers#

Character Icons#

jointCharaIcon.tls contains the character icons from the first Mario & Sonic game, with placeholders for the new playable & rival characters; they appear as a dark Mario silhouette with their Japanese names overlayed. Although this sprite set is unused, an updated version including the new playable characters can be seen in-game on a physical scoreboard in the Curling event, depending on who is leading each team. None of the icons seen there (barring Dry Bones, whose artwork is recycled from Mario Party 8) are used anywhere else in the game, suggesting the icons were all re-made at some point but this scoreboard's textures were not updated accordingly.

Item Icons#

Graphics for various items including a Green Shell (id01.tpl), a Red Shell (id02.tpl), and a Super Star (id03.tpl), leftover from the previous game's Dream Racing and Dream Platform events. These can be found in the sportsResource files for the Dream Events along with the updated item icons that are used in-game.

Early Sports Shop Item Icons#

ResourceShopSports.cpk contains early icon graphics for the Sports Shop items. The final game stores are all stored in seperate archives for the paint sheets (ResourceShopSports_Paint.cpk), square decals (ResourceShopSports_Sticker.cpk), and banner decals (ResourceShopSports_Banner.cpk). The early file archive for the Sports Shop items only contain the medium sized graphics (suffixed with _m) while the final file archives include the medium and small versions (suffixed with _s).

(Note: Not all of the item icons are pictured given how most of them match their final counterparts one-to-one, so only the ones with different designs from their final designs are shown.)

The final version of this banner replaces the Koopa Troopa's sprite with the one from Super Mario Bros. to match with the rest of the other enemies, and includes Blooper.

Mario & Sonic Banner

1250_sticker_rectangle_square_m

The early banner used artwork from the previous game, likely because the art for this game hadn't been created yet.

Mario & Luigi Banner

The flower background was to the side in the early banner, while the final integrates it as the background.

Bowser & Dr. Eggman Banner

1254_sticker_rectangle_square_m

In the early banner, Dr. Eggman originally used his artwork from the previous game while the final used 3D generic stock artwork. The background was originally black and purple before being changed to black and red.

1255_sticker_rectangle_square_m

The Mario and Sonic Logo 1 banner did not use the text seen in the series' logo, instead being white and red text written in Impact behind a black background.

Mario & Sonic Logo Banner 2

1256_sticker_rectangle_square_m

Similar to the last early board graphic, but the text is colored black behind a white background with a flame on the left side.

Mario & Sonic Logo Banner 3

1257_sticker_rectangle_square_m

Again, similar to the last one but with the text stretched along the board.

Announcer Voice Clips#

Fourteen announcer clips, placed subsequently after another in the files, announce the names of modes that do not exist in the game. Most of them appear to describe some sort of extra mini-game mode, and were likely recorded before the English name for that mode was decided.

(Interestingly, Adventure Tours is the name of the story mode for the Nintendo DS version, so it could be possible that it was planned at some point for the Wii version too.)

A bit further down the line are three more unused clips in a similar vein. These may have been early names for Party Mode.

Unused Models and Animations#

Likely an early model for Mario that appears to have glitched out textures and was likely used for testing.

It appears that the rabbit from the DS remake of Super Mario 64 was going to appear in this game as a possible rival boss, as he was likely replaced with Big Bullet Bill in the final game.

Apparently, Sonic's model from Sonic and the Secret Rings can be found within the game's filesystem, likely used for testing.
