Mario and Luigi go into the sewers to take out turtles, crabs, and flies. Probably the only game that centers around Mario and Luigi actually plumbing.
Unused Graphics#
A snake-like creature who could've been a fourth enemy type. A similar enemy would later appear in Mario Clash.
Unused poses for Mario (and Luigi). The first pose appears to be an alternate version of one of Mario's sprites shown when jumped on by the other player, although this version seems to have some incorrect pixels. The second pose appears to be Mario sitting down and letting out a breath, indicated by the white cloud (similar to when a level is finished in the Game and Watch version of the game). The third and fourth poses almost look like Mario riding something, but it's unknown what they were for. The poses are absent in the NES version and the Kaettekita version of the game.
Version Differences#
There are five official Mario Bros. boards in MAME:
- mario (US. revision E)
- mariof (US. revision F)
- mariog (US. revision G)
- marioja (Japan, older)
- marioj (Japan, revision C)

Japan revision C removes "Co, Ltd." from the copyright notice and centers it. The American version likewise updates the copyright notice accordingly and adds a trademark symbol.
Gameplay#
- The "older" Japanese revision has a completely different control scheme similar to that of the game Joust. Mario and Luigi will automatically walk when the joystick is moved in either direction, the speed of which is determined by how long it is held, and will not stop unless it is pivoted the other way. All further revisions of the game use a more conventional control scheme with only one walk speed. Curiously, Ocean's port of Mario Bros. for the Commodore 64 controls this exact same way.

- The tutorial screen present in the "older" revision introducing each new pest is much more decorated, depicting a scene surrounded by pipes and water, and lacks onscreen directions. Only Slipice's introduction retains this layout in the other revisions.
- Japanese revision C adds a new phase between Phase 1 and 3 featuring four Shellcreepers, and is missing from the American version. All future Nintendo-developed ports of the game (with the exception of the original NES version) would retain it in all regions.
- US revision F has a bug where the 1-up bonus will overflow to 0 after obtaining 980,000 points, causing the player to gain lives every frame until eventually the lives counter overflows to 0, causing an immediate Game Over. This bug is not present on the other revisions.
