An extremely late prototype of the Game Boy port of Dr. Mario was found by video game hunter Michael Leib at a garage sale at an apartment building up the street from his mother's house. Not long after acquiring it, it was dumped and released by Nintendo Player on November 25, 2013.

With the game already having been finished, there are practically no differences in terms of visual gameplay. However, there are internal differences, with approximately 4.5% of differing bytes, different storage of sprites, and a minor header difference.
