Interestingly, the character names listed in the Debug Menu suggest that the cast was to include a more traditional cast of Mario characters, including Nurse Peach, rather than the cast of Wario Land 3, which would also imply that the change was made much later in development.

Passwords#
A well kept secret in this game is passwords for the game modes, Classic, Marathon, and Score Attack. A decoder for them is available online. This may have been one of those online scoreboard things like they did with Mario Golf for the GameCube. When in any of the three modes, win or lose a game and when the menu is on-screen, press Z+R+L+D-Pad Left to bring up this screen.

Unused Test Message#
Using the below GameShark code will make the game boot up to the story mode results screen with an unused "TEST" message.

Region Error Screen#
This error screen would show if you tried playing this game on a PAL Nintendo 64.
Development Text#
Present at 0x80021BE0 in RAM.
GraphBin
Present at 0x800AD2E0 in RAM. Interestingly, there are the Japanese names of characters and enemies that never appeared in the game such as Peach, Bowser, Magikoopa, Piranha Plant, Boo, Wiggler, Shy Guy, Cheep Cheep, Bob-omb, and Koopa Troopa. It's likely that the game was originally going to feature characters from the Mario franchise instead of Wario Land 3.

To do:
Explain how to modify player names.
|
While the US version doesn't support Japanese name entry, Japanese characters remain in the game's fonts and will be displayed if hacked into a player's name, or via loading a save file from the unreleased Japanese N64 version. Japanese name entry would of course become supported in the GameCube version.
Regional Differences#
|
To do:
See if the iQue version has any more differences.
Check if password screen works on N64 Japanese version.
|
General Differences#
- The GameCube version has higher quality music than the N64 and iQue Player versions.
- The hidden password screen was removed in the GameCube version. However, the button code to access it wasn't removed. Pressing the button code crashes the game. The password screen exists in the iQue Player version, but the text doesn't display properly and appears to be corrupted.
- The N64 and iQue Player versions render at 320x237 and the Japanese version renders at 640x480.
Title Screen#
- The Japanese logo was redesigned to resemble the logo in the original NES Dr. Mario.
- The copyright years in the unreleased N64 Japanese version are more verbose, covering multiple years instead of the line of years in GameCube.
- The "PRESS ANY BUTTON" message was changed to "PRESS ANY KEY" in the Japanese version.
- The Nintendo logo's font was changed in the GameCube version.
- The copyright year was updated in the iQue and Japanese versions. The iQue version also has an extra copyright for iQue.
Octo#
For the North American version, the character Octo was recolored from his normal black to a bright orange, likely for racial sensitivity reasons. This is inconsistent with his appearance in Wario Land 3, which uses the black color scheme in all versions. When Dr. Mario 64 was later released as part of Nintendo Puzzle Collection, the traditional color was reverted. The unreleased Japanese N64 version shares the same graphics as Puzzle Collection.
