Sonic X is an educational game based on the anime of the same name. It's also a reskin of fellow Leapster game Numbers on the Run: Counting on Zero, and would itself be reskinned as Go Diego Go!: Animal Rescuer.

This is one of those games that not even the Sonic Twitter (X) page will dare to mention.

You're too good, Sonic.

To do:
A lot.

  • Figure out how the music and voice clips are stored and see if there are any unused music and voice clips.
  • Figure out how the level maps are stored and see if there are any unused level maps.
  • Figure out where the sprite mappings are and how they work.

Unused Graphics#

To do:

  • Rip the rest of the sprites. (The graphics are stored in 4BPP GBA format. The graphics start at 0x117074 and the palettes start at 0x114B0C.)
  • There's likely more unused graphics than just the leftover sprites.
  • Find out where the mapping data for the game's sprites are located.
  • When said mapping data is found, re-rip the sprite of Zero shown below.

Scattered throughout the ROM are a ton of leftover graphics from Counting on Zero.

Placeholder Credits#

22.swf is an unused and very unfinished credits sequence, using placeholder text rather than actual credits. The font is in Arial, since the font wasn’t set to one of the custom fonts in the game itself.

Unused Debug Mode#

Create an account with the name .SONSTER.

  • B + Up - Free fly/noclip mode.
  • Hint (the "?" button) - Stop flying/enable collision.
  • B + Left - Display coordinates on bottom-right side of screen.
  • B + Down - Access the cheat menu/hidden level select.

Notably, you can play as Zero via Debug Mode, though the sprites are a bit buggy.

Unused Cheat Menu#

To do:
While this section said "it still works", being a placeholder in itself, does it specifically work well for the Sonic X game? The level name seen here doesn't correspond to their actual in-game names.

Another Counting on Zero leftover, though it still works.

Unused Levels#

Unused_Leftover_Sonic_X.mp4

What looks to be a test level using graphics from Counting on Zero's Outlandish Outer Spacy Zone (even with the same character). Unfortunately, the camera does not move.

SonicX_Unused_Place.mp4

Seemingly another test level, with this one using graphics from Angel Island.
