Sonic Advance is a port of Sonic Advance released for J2ME and Blackberry phones, and later Android devices (not to be confused with the 2011 Sega port).

Unused Music#

Sound

Description

A jingle likely intended for the Title Screen. In-game, it reuses the main menu theme.

A jingle likely intended for a player who beaten a Time Attack record.

Partially-Unused Music#

A recreation of the "Phase 2 Boss Fight" music from Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I, played when the player has Power Sneakers and encounters a boss fight. While it is possible for the song to play, mainly Casino Paradise Zone Act 2, the full song cannot be heard as the closest monitor's distance to a boss fight isn't close enough for the song to loop.

Version Differences#

This needs some investigation.

Specifically:

  • Further investigate the Gameloft ports, including for differences between them.

GBA to J2ME#

  • The game runs at a higher resolution.
  • The game's frame rate is lower, with character and object animations adjusted to compensate.
  • The shield sprites have been changed.
  • The invincibility theme is replaced with an arrangement similar to the original game's opening theme.
  • The soundtrack uses MIDI rearrangements.
  • Loading screens display gameplay tips between stages, though they look different from the ones in the Sega port.
  • The character select screen has been completely removed, leaving only Sonic playable.
  • Ice Mountain, Egg Rocket, Cosmic Angel, X-Zone, and The Moon have all been removed. The new zone progression is Neo Green Hill → Secret Base → Angel Island → Casino Paradise.
  • Special Stages have been removed.
  • A lot of miscellaneous scenery detail is missing.
  • Many visual effects have been lost or modified, due to J2ME not being able to freely emulate rotation effects. The following were affected:
    • The spotlights at the beginning of Secret Base
    • The clouds in the background of Angel Island
    • Most of the animations in Casino Paradise
    • The hammer head on the Egg Hammer Tank being replaced with a spike ball
  • The soundtrack has been cut down. Both Acts in a zone use the Act 1 variant, while Mecha Knuckles has lost his unique boss music.
  • Unlike Sega's version (where no credits are shown, besides a copyright screen), there is a credits sequence, though it only lists the porting staff.

J2ME to Android#

  • All of the MIDI rearrangements were recorded and formatted in the .ogg audio format.
  • While foregrounds and sprites are displayed at their original size, the backgrounds of every zone except Secret Base have been stretched to fit the new aspect ratio, causing some really nasty pixelation.
  • The tubes that the Egg Ball uses are horizontally misaligned with the sprites. As such, Eggman and the spike ball can be seen to stop after entering a horizontal tube, then teleport to a different one.
