Sonic Advance (Android, 2011)

Sonic Advance is a port of Sonic Advance released for Android devices (not to be confused with the 2014 Gameloft-published port).

Regional Differences#

This needs some investigation.

Specifically:

  • Investigate the Chinese version further, once the anti-piracy gets removed.
    • This is probably not an Anti-Piracy - I remember that the Time Attack mode will show an activation screen informing you to purchase the full game if your game wasn't activated. The cracked version would bypass it when choosing "OK".

China

The Chinese version, likely released in 2011 or 2012, has the entire game translated to Chinese.

Anti-Piracy#

Notably, the Chinese version includes an anti-piracy protection. If it doesn't detect that a device bought Sonic Advance or can't find a SIM Card in the device, it disables the main game, so the only thing that a player can do is either use Time Attack or quit the game. Unfortunately, as the servers for the game shut down at a currently unknown date, this makes the Chinese version impossible to be played, even with using a cracked version of the game.

There's a whole lotta words here, but not enough pictures. Please fix this.
Specifically: Upload the title screen and shield sprites for comparison.

Specifically: The game was re-released in 2013(?). Investigate if there's any changes.

GBA to Android#

  • The Android port runs at a higher resolution than the GBA version, most noticeable on the title screen.
  • Whereas the original game runs at 60 FPS, the Android port's frame rate is capped at 15 FPS, likely due to the limited hardware of Android phones at the time.
    • Character and object animations were adjusted to compensate for the low frame rate so that no frames get lost.
    • The shield sprites were replaced, with a more translucent appearance, since the GBA version's flickering effect likely would not work at 15 FPS.
  • The Android version uses MIDI arrangements of the soundtrack, similar to Sonic & Knuckles Collection.
  • All remixes of tracks from Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic 2 have been replaced, likely due to Sega not licensing them for the port.
    • The invincibility theme is replaced with a remix of the title theme.
    • The X-Zone throwback boss themes are replaced with the final boss theme from Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I.
  • There are now loading screens between acts and zones, which display gameplay tips.
  • The Sonic & Tails cheat was removed; there's no known way to access the Sonic & Tails mode in this version.
  • When a Chaos Emerald has been collected, it appears in the corner of its respective zone's icon in the Zone Select screen.
  • If the player has collected all the Chaos Emeralds, they can access the Moon Zone as Sonic without completing the game as the other three characters first.
  • The Tiny Chao Garden was removed entirely, to the point that there are no files referring to it.
  • The credits from the original game have been removed; this version's credits sequence is simply a still image of the Sega logo with copyright info.
