Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam

This article has a talk page!

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam is the result of a not-so-unexpected blunder by Luigi, where a book containing the world of Paper Mario (featuring Paper Mario) is knocked loose from a shelf and the world inside is unleashed upon the Mario & Luigi universe. This crossover focuses on adding Paper Mario (and paper enemies) to the typical Mario & Luigi formula, but also features new(ish) gimmicks such as Papercraft Battles and cards that assist the player in battle.

Removed Test Movies#

In the main executable, there are remnants of a folder for testing with precompiled movies that does not exist in the final release.

Unused Graphics#

MLPJ_Test_01.png Mlpj_test_02.png

Two checkerboard textures named Test_01 and Test_02 can be found in m_title. Note that Test_02 (the red and white checkerboard texture) is almost the same as the one on the title screen.

A hand sprite is present in pmd_dmg_test.

A darker paper Goomba was left in bm_p_dummy00, bm_p_dummy01, and bm_p_dummy02.

A debug font can still be found in h3d.bch. This same font is also present in Super Mario Maker.

Numerous unused Goomba sprites.

pmd_hacchin contains sprites for a Paper Stingby, an enemy that has yet to appear in any Paper Mario game (discounting the origami versions from Paper Mario: The Origami King).

Unused Rank-Up Bonuses#

Quick Level and Counterattack Star as seen in-game.

Two Rank-Up Bonuses exist in the game that go unused from never being possible to choose upon ranking up. By opening up a save file in a hex editor and changing 0x3A to 09 and 0x3C to 17, Mario's Flower Rank and Leaf Rank bonuses will be changed into the unused Quick Level and Counterattack Star bonuses respectively. The text for these bonuses can be found in Msg\US_en\Item.msbt.

Name

In-game description

Notes

Quick Level

Gives you 20% more EXP from enemies you
defeat, making it easier to level up.

Works as described. This bonus first appeared in Dream Team and would not reappear until Brothership.
The icon for this bonus is a yellow present with flagpole with an up arrow on the flag, also used by the Mushroom EXP bonus.

Counterattack Star

Earn Star Points whenever you damage enemies
with counterattacks.

Works as described. The bonus gives an extremely small Star Point gain, possibly the minimum amount possible to give.
The low amount gained makes this bonus questionable if it were to be used in the final game as-is.
The icon for this bonus is an orange present with an exclamation point on it, used by multiple other bonuses.

Regional Differences#

Region Title#

Europe/Australia

US

The European and Australian version adds Bros. in the Paper Jam title.

Dialogue Changes#

In the British English version, dialogue is rewritten to change words to their British spellings, such as "colour", "moustache", "aeroplane", "rumour, "terrorise", "armour", "practise", and "favourite". The exception is one line of dialogue about Nabbit, reading "his favorite pastime is running off with treasures from Peach's Castle," which remained unchanged in the British English version, as did "Tutorial: Airplane Guard".

Any case where an em-dash is used is replaced by a single dash separated by spaces, a comma, or a semicolon if applicable, such as going from Bomb Derby—or to Bomb Derby – or. The British script removes every em-dash except for two: "And then take the Toads that are here someplace safe—" and "What in the—?!", both in Sunbeam Plains.
