Fighting EX Layer is the spiritual successor to both Fighting Layer and the Street Fighter EX series, taking the gameplay and characters from both games and adding new features and characters. Even Terry from SNK's Fatal Fury joins as a guest fighter.

A mobile version for iOS and Android, Fighting EX Layer -α, was released in 2019, followed by a Nintendo Switch version, Fighting EX Layer: Another Dash, in 2021.

The title screen on the Switch version had its color changed from blue to gold, and the logo was changed.
