Fatal Fury is the very first fighting made for the Neo Geo system, and it shows.

This classic gem by SNK lets you play as the lone wolf Terry Bogard along with his brother and a Muay Thai kickboxer friend where they travel around Southtown to beat up breakdancers, masked wrestlers, drunken kickboxers, and muscular old men in a quest to avenge his father's death to a vicious mobster.

Nevertheless, the trio fought together for the first time as a team in KOF '94.

POWER WAVE! HISHOUKEN! HURRICANE UPPER!

Unused Music#

While the following songs are not completely unused, due to the fact that these are used in cutscenes that last less than ten seconds total, you never get to hear much of them.

Kidnapping This tune plays after you defeat Billy Kane and are celebrating your victory.

Encounter with Geese Fatal_Fury_(Arcade)_Unheard_Theme_2_-_Geese.ogg‎ This plays when you're dumped in front of Geese Howard before the final battle starts.

Regional Differences#

Title Screen

Japan

US/Europe

The title screens have similar designs across regions, but the Garou Densetsu title screen also includes the romaji for the game's title above the logo. The Fatal Fury title screen moves the SNK logo upward and the copyright info to the lower left in order to fit the lengthier copyright string on the screen.

Attract Mode

Japan

US/Europe

The screen scrolls the phrase "Fatal Fury" or "Garou Densetsu" depending on the region.

Special Moves#

Depending on the region, the game uses different joystick and button combinations to let you perform special moves.

Crack Shoot (Terry Bogard)

Japan

US/Europe

That's the same input command used for Andy's Sonic Split (aka Kuuha Dan).

Hishouken (Andy Bogard)

Japan

US/Europe

Shoryudan (Andy Bogard)

Japan

US/Europe

"You must defeat my Shoryudan to stand a chance!"

Hurricane Upper (Joe Higashi)

Japan

US/Europe

"Wind Style: Hurricane Upper!"

Tiger Kick (Joe Higashi)

Japan

US/Europe

Again, that's the same input for the Sonic Split.

Andy Bogard's "Zan Ei Ken" attack is different in both versions. In the American/European version, hold Back for an instant then press Forward + A. In the Japanese version, hold Down+Back for an instant then press Forward + A.

Finally, the command for Joe Higashi's "Slash Kick" attack is different in both versions. In the American/European version, do a half-circle backwards and press B. In the Japanese version, hold Down+Back for an instant then press Up+Forward + B - the same command as the Tiger Kick in the US version.

Later entries in the series, as well every region of the Genesis port and crossover appearances, retained the Japanese command inputs.

33 years later, Joe's Hurricane Upper American command input is retained in Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves.

The console version features a longer introduction. It begins similarly to the arcade version, with the only difference being that the scrolling "Garou Densetsu/Fatal Fury" text moves faster. It then transitions to a view of South Town, where Terry steps out of a taxi and looks up at a large billboard featuring two wrestlers and the game logo. The intro ends with the logo coming out of the poster and zooming in on the screen.
