Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers was the entrance to another era of Capcom by not only making yet another entry amongst the vast amount of Street Fighter II iterations but also moving on to their next arcade system board, the CP System II (CPS-2 for short).

More notably, it added four new fighters to the roster: T. Hawk, Dee Jay, Fei-Long, and Cammy, with only one of them really staying in the public eye.

Unused Graphics#

Large and small name labels for "Sarah". Given that this game notably introduced only one new female character, it could be assumed that this was an alternate name for Cammy, though whether it's an early name or one intended for certain game regions is unclear. Also, no "1P vs 2P (Character) Wins" announcer quote can be found for this name.

A slightly different subtitle graphic with no "The".

Following in its predecessors' footsteps, the new impact sprite for Ryu's souped-up and redrawn Hadoukens also disappears before its last frame of animation is shown.

Regional Differences#

All these differences were also carried to Super Street Fighter II Turbo in their respective regions.

Sounds#

Some of the new characters' moves have different names:

Cammy's QCF + Kick move is called Spiral Arrow in the Japanese version and Cannon Drill in international versions.

Sound A5: Japan

Sound A4: International

Cammy's Shoryuken Motion + Kick move's is named Cannon Spike in the Japanese version and on international versions, it's Thrust Kick.

Sound A7: Japan

Sound A6: International

Dee Jay's projectile attack is Slash! in Japan and Max Out! elsewhere.

Sound 1C0/1C1: Japan

Sound 1C2/1C3: International

Continue Screen#

  • Just as it was done with the localization of its CPS-1 counterparts, the Japanese version contains tips at the bottom of the Continue? screen to help improve your skills at the game but this part was made empty in international versions.

Japan

International

To do:
Add the rest of the Japanese version's continue screen text and translate them.

Japanese Description

Translated

相手に近づきすぎるのは危険だ。 自分の間合いを
常に保って、有利に闘いをすすめろ!

"It is dangerous to get too close to your opponent. Always keep spacing in mind and use it to your advantage in combat!"

  • In the Japanese version, each character has several different win quotes. In the international versions, the returning characters only have their one win quote from the three previous games, whereas the new characters have two win quotes.

Oddities#

Cammy's Ending#

Ssf2arcade.png
Due to a glitch, Cammy's ending on non-Japanese versions abruptly cuts off the text on a certain part, although the complete text is in the ROM.

Wait! If what he
says is true...

The missing part was restored in the home ports and in Super Street Fighter II Turbo, but with a comma instead of ellipses.
