The Sega Saturn was Sega's next console after the Genesis Sega CD 32X Frankensteinian, addon-riddled, nightmarish monster. It was notable for using quads instead of triangles, setting it apart from almost every other 3D system...and making it more than a bit difficult to develop for (especially multiplatform games).
Its main competitor was the PlayStation, and the fact there are now five of those and only one two of these should tell you who won that particular battle.
JVC/Victor and Hitachi (both of those companies who provided Sega the necessary processors for this console) also made their own versions of the Sega Saturn, the V.Saturn and the Hi-Saturn respectively, both under license from Sega.

Revisional Differences#
Boot Screen#
The V.Saturn and Hi-Saturn revisions use a derivative version of the Japanese logo, with the Hi-Saturn itself using an entirely different boot-up animation and jingle from the other revisions of the BIOS.
