LEGO Indiana Jones 2 has some of the sickest burns to ever come out of Peru. It's also one of those cases where there's enough unused content in it to make up a whole other game.
Early Leftovers#
Likely as a result of the game being rushed, several remnants of early or unfinished characters can be found in the final game just by using your eyes. The first of these is Willie, who can be seen with an early version of her singer costume on the image used for the "Character Creator" in the Creator box. This version of Willie seems to be largely based off of her appearance from the first game, LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures, but notably has red gloves instead of bare hands. In the actual Temple of Doom film, Willie actually does wear gloves while wearing this outfit, albeit she wears a red glove on her right hand and a yellow glove on her left instead of red on both. In the final game, Willie's hands revert to being bare like in the first game, likely because the real world Willie minifigure also had bare hands.
Additionally, this in-between Willie already has the Perfume item equipped, which is a mostly useless item that was introduced in this game to replace her unique ability from the first game: being able to scream on command to shatter glass.

On the same image for the Character Creator, Marion also looks wrong, using what seems to be her exact same textures of her Cairo outfit from the first game. Notably, this LIJ1 version of Marion is the only version of Marion to appear in the LIJ2 trailer video that plays if you wait for awhile on the title screen.

The most perplexing early design can be seen on the image for the Level Builder, which features the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull character Charles Stanforth on it. It seems that originally, Stanforth was supposed to have a grey hair piece instead of having a bald head with hair printing.
The fact that Stanforth is on the Level Builder image to begin with is bizarre in its own right. The other characters featured on the image are all playable while creating a level: Enemy Boxer places baseplates; Mola Ram places enemies, animals and vehicles; the alien in its UFO raises and lowers terrain height; and the construction worker does everything else. However, Stanforth might have been used for an unused "Director" role as mentioned in the Unused Characters section.

Unused Graphics#
A kind message is hiding in the game, probably left by Harrison Ford himself. The image is located in Indy2GAME.dat\GUI\LEGAL\ESRBYOURMOM_NXG.TEX.

Located in GUI\TEXTURES are early versions of the thumbnails for every story level, which were entirely different. There's two for each level. Many of these appear to be incomplete, as quite a few include visible level editor tools or early character designs. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - Part 1 oddly has separate images for the Dovchenko boss fight in Hangar Havoc, suggesting that the fight may have been intended to be its own level. The "_F" and "_S" at the end of each filename are likely shorthand for "Free Play" and "Story," which would explain the purpose of having two thumbnails for each level. This would be normal in any other LEGO game, but The Adventure Continues doesn't have Free-Play! Instead, it has what is known as "Treasure Mode" which shows the original levels, but with different objectives that require you to purchase characters in the hub.
Most of these icons (with the exception of the ones for the Dovchenko boss fight) are used in the August 17, 2009 Wii prototype, in addition to a similar set of icons for its bonus levels. The second icon for each level is used for Treasure Mode.
Stored with the level thumbnails is this generic one where they seem to have pasted a new render of Indy onto the box art of the first game. It's of a much lower quality than the level thumbnails.

Various screenshots of the Level Builder taken at strange angles. Like with the level thumbnails above, some of them have visible developer tools in them.

Two larger images containing another assortment of Level Builder screenshots, each one seemingly showing off a different object or mechanic.

Images of the Construction Worker characters from the Level Builder, exact purpose unknown. There's twelve of them in total, but the rest are just duplicates of these five. These are used in the August 17, 2009 Wii prototype within the character creator, seemingly as placeholders.
Logos for DC and Warner Bros, even though they're not part of this franchise. Likely a leftover from LEGO Batman: The Video Game.
Font that includes the Batman and Robin symbols, from the LEGO Batman games.
Hidden Objects#
Crystal Skull Part 1 Hub#
A very basic model of a rocket can be found underneath the kiddy ride in the Doom Town section of the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - Part 1 hub. It appears to be an extremely early model for the ride itself.
Crystal Skull Part 2 Hub#
When performing a glitch involving the mental patient to get out of bounds in the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - Part 2 hub, there are a ton of misplaced objects that can be seen in other parts of the level. Watch on YouTube
Unused Levels#
|
|
To do: |
There are at least 47 unused levels leftover in the games files. A good chunk of these levels have the _ARTSLICE suffix. Some of them don't have objects, or are missing camera data, with interesting final results.
Raiders of the Lost Ark#
- RAIDERSHUB_ARTSLICE
A copy of the main hub, complete with objects and geometry/collision. The camera and music data are missing.
- NEPAL_ARTSLICE
Uses Raven Rescue's level geometry and collision data; camera, objects and music are missing.
- CAIRO_ARTSLICE
Market Mayhem, but without objects and music.
- ARKOPENING_ARTSLICE
A copy of Belloq Battle, without objects and music, though interestingly the Ark's lightning are present: they are static and won't hurt the player.
- RAIDERSBUILDER6
What seems to be a test level for Raiders' bonus levels. It features a bunch of objects and a windy ambient noise.
Temple of Doom#
- SHANGHAI_ARTSLICE
A copy of Shang High (treasure level counterpart of Lao Chase). It's empty and is missing collision and camera data.
- INDIANVILLAGE_ARTSLICE
Empty level, once entered the player directly falls to their death.
- PANKOT_ARTSLICE
An unfinished level that takes place inside the dining room of Pankot Palace. The room is completely different from both Malice at the Palace (Story level) and Disarming Duel (Treasure level), in terms of geometry and camera. It is possibly an early version of said levels, though the geometry and collision is unfinished, it features a large balcony which is accessible and two lateral walls are left barren without textures.
- KALITEMPLE_ARTSLICE
A copy of Temple Tantrum with no objects and music. What's different from the main level is that there's now doors that block off certain passages, such as the ones the Thuggees use for hiding or for coming out to attack you. Also, the lava turns out to be a solid floor and as such you can safely walk on it (as far as the collision goes that is).
- BRIDGE_ARTSLICE
A copy of Cliff Clamber (Treasure level) with an early progression model. A pair of boulders are present on one of the higher platforms and holes for the kid hatches are present (in the final game you would have to throw spears at three sockets placed on the mountain in order to progress). Progression is impossible due to the player being unable to exit the river normally.
Last Crusade#
Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Part 1#
- CONTROLROOMFREE
A nearly-complete Treasure Mode level for the Dovchenko boss fight room! It uses the same music track as the used Forklift Fun level, albeit with the appropriate ambiance of the Dovchenko boss fight room. From what is included, it appears the player would have needed to bring an explosive-wielding character (read; General Ross) and a wrench character (read; Mutt) into the level.
It is impossible to complete the level, as what seems to be an intended enemy ambush does not spawn any enemies, and in fact there are empty icons where the enemy icons should be, so it is unknown exactly how many enemies would have been fought afterwards beyond the initial 10 shown (if there were even any more enemies intended to be fought after the initial 10 at all), and it is also unknown which exact enemy characters would have been used in the level had it been completed.
Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Part 2#
Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Part 3#
Level Editor Objects And Textures#
In the FRAMEWORK-DATA folder, one can find various meshes left over from a level editor. These objects also exist in LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes and potentially other Lego games that use the NXG engine.
Additionally, in the subfolders FRAMEWORK-DATA/EDITOR/AI and FRAMEWORK-DATA/GUI/TEXTURES, various textures can be found. The AI textures depict various letters with vertically mirrored letters. These were likely used for AI pathing purposes.
Meanwhile, the GUI/TEXTURES textures depict various things, some of which look similar to the controller disconnected screen used in the console versions.
Leftover Character Resources from the First Game#
Almost every single character found in the first game, used and unused is present here in some form or another. In LEGO Indiana Jones 2, instead of each minifigure character having their own respective GHG model, characters were composed with CD files, (Character Definition). Each CD file contains a file path to a generic GHG, and then lists file paths to body textures, GSCs containing hat and/or hair meshes, face GHGs and animation sets. This is the first LEGO game to do this. Despite the game using this method for composing characters, most of the characters who were also featured in the first game, (and even some from the second), still retain their now unused individual GHGs converted to the NXG format created for this game. In cases where the character was featured in the first game, the designs also match those of the first game, i.e. the Enemy Boxer having brown eyebrows instead of gray like they are in the second game. In cases where characters from Kingdom of the Crystal Skull have dedicated GHGs, they sometimes use earlier minifigure designs, such as Mac. And if the unused GHGs aren't enough, every hat mesh, hair mesh, face, and body texture of the unused characters from the first game now also exist in the form of GSCs and GHGs, to be used in CD files. Some even have new UI icons matching the style of the used character icons in the second game.
Early Character Designs#
- Early Cemetery Warrior King Design
The Cemetery Warrior King has a leftover icon and textures that depict a much different design. This version is mostly white, with a grey skull mask and crown reminiscent of the Ugha King. These are named as if they are the original textures, while the final ones are affixed with _NEW. This design was used in the August 17th, 2009 prototype.

To do:
|
For the sake of cutting down redundancy, any character left over from the previous game will not be included here.

Description |
|---|---|
DUMMYCHAR, 2, 3, TOILET |
Four dummy characters, likely used to test riding animations. |
LEGO_ENGINEER_REDHAT and YELLOWHAT |
Unused variants of the main builder, which likely would've been an early way to differentiate them before it was decided to make some of them in-game characters. Likely were revisited and redesigned as the builders of Lego Harry Potter Years 1-4's Level Builder mode. |
LEGO_CONSTRUCTION, ELECTRICIAN, GARDENER, SITEMANAGER, and TOOLS |
Various unused files for builders found in "CHARS/LEGO_ENGINEER". All of these use the main builder's appearance. They all have different abilities that seem to be early versions of abilities used by the main builder: Construction may have dealt with LEGO Bricks or been an early version of the PROPS ability, Electrician may have handled the connectivity between objects (which are handled by Grab Sockets in the final), Gardener may have dealt with placing plant decorations before being rolled into PROPS, SITEMANAGER's purpose is unknown (as it reuses the Mechanical ability), but may have been an early version of the Curator, and Tools may have been used for something relating to items. |
LEGO_DIRECTOR/Early Stanforth/Spielberg |
A copy of Stanforth's CD can be found in the folder "CHARS/LEGO_ENGINEER", under the internal name LEGO_DIRECTOR. He was intended for use as a "Curator" Builder for the Level Builder, which would have the same functions as the main Builder's Options menu. He notably has Stanforth's early grey hairpiece design as seen on the level builder image. His GHG file however contains a unique design based on the Director figure from the Lego Studios theme who in-turn is based in Steven Spielberg, who directed the first 4 Indiana Jones films. |
LEGO_MECHANICAL |
An unused builder found in "CHARS/INDIANAJONES" and "CHARS/LEGO_ENGINEER". This character uses Indy's appearance, but doesn't link to a CD file. Rather, it seemingly uses Indy's GHG file as the base model. He was intended for use as a "Mechanical" Builder, which, judging by prerelease footage, would have handled functional items that would be split among the Special, Switches, Adventure, and Hazards categories used by the main Builder in the final. |
LEGO_PROPS |
An unused builder found in "CHARS/LEGO_ENGINEER". This character uses the main builder's appearance. As the name says, its ability would've been to place down props. It can be seen doing so in prerelease footage. However, its txt file also lists Creatures and Mechanical among its abilities, possibly due to certain elements (like the whip fan and the vehicles) from that prerelease footage being moved to those categories. |
LEGODZILLA |
A very out-of-place character. It is a green, Godzilla-like minifigure. It has its own skeleton and animations, strangely enough. |
Smith |
One of the two FBI agents that interrogates Indy in the Crystal Skull movie. He has a CD file, animations, txt file, an entry in the TEXT.CSV file, and is listed in the INDY2.APJ file. He even has commented out mentions in the Crystal Skull Part 1 Hub's LEVEL.SCP script file (which would have had him unlocked alongside Taylor and General Ross after completing the Saber Jet Race), implying that he was cut late in development. His weapon is commented out. |
JetSki & JetSki_P2 |
A pair of Jet Skis. In the Raiders Hub's LEVEL.SCP script file, the Hovitos Temple island is referred to as "Jetski_Island", implying that these would have appeared there instead of the speedboats. However, the P2 one has various issues such as floating and characters being unable to ride it, which is likely a factor in them being replaced with the speedboats. |
Lego Batman/Harry Potter Modes#
|
|
This needs some investigation. |
In the Wii version of the game (more specifically NTSC Rev 0), the mechanics of the game can be changed to that of Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 or Lego Batman by modifying address 8088C50C. The address can be modified with the following codes: Watch on YouTube
Name |
Code |
|---|---|
Harry Potter Mode |
0488C50C 00000001 04170CD4 2C000001 04170CE4 2C000002 |
Lego Batman Mode |
0488C50C 00000003 04170CD4 2C000003 04170CF4 2C000002 |
(Codes: Proboscis-2)
- Harry Potter Mode
- The title is absent from the start menu, and the camera focuses in on a random area in the warehouse.
- Selecting New Game takes the player to whatever level contains the "newgame_level" string in levels.txt.
- The loading screen has an A button prompt that is nonfunctional.
- Player icons are animated. This implies that LHP1-4's Wii version would keep the animated icons from the other versions.
- Characters without projectile-based weapons cannot punch. Characters that do have them cannot shoot from the ground, and have to either punch multiple times or jump to do so.
- Buildits are nonfunctional, as they are replaced by LHP1-4's "Spellit" system. Buildits are automatically activated instead.
- The crosshairs when aiming a gun are replaced by rapidly-moving brackets.
- Vehicles cannot be ridden on, meaning the first level is unbeatable (by normal means, at least) in this mode.
- Lego Batman Mode
- The boxes in the warehouse are all opened by default.
- Trying to load any hub area crashes the game, so the game must be modded to load into a level.
- The loading screen has the same nonfunctional A button prompt.
- The player item type system is disabled, removing the player's weapons and making most levels impossible to complete.
- The minikit counter appears in the bottom left when pausing, using the Treasure model.
- Exiting a level crashes the game.

Unused Extras#
Featured within the game's code are nine known fully functional unused extras that were intended to be activated via the pause menu. The following codes each replace the "Silhouettes" extra, and are for the Rev 0 North American Wii version of the game.
It is worth noting that these extras are actually listed in the August 17, 2009 Wii prototype, although none of them can be used there, and in fact even the extras that made it into the final game can't be used in the prototype either.

Always Score Multiply |
04728dac 80728590 |
Causes the studs collected to be multiplied to varying numbers. This is a leftover from LEGO Batman: The Videogame. |
|
Character Studs |
04728dac 80728350 |
Causes characters to drop studs when killed. This extra was featured in the previous three LEGO games, but was absent from this one. |
|
Deflect Bolts |
04728dac 807283d0 |
Causes bullets to bounce off of the player rather than them taking damage. This is a leftover from LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga. |
|
Disarm Goons |
04728dac 80728340 |
Causes enemies with firearms to not be able to shoot. This is a leftover from The Original Adventures. |
|
Extra Hearts |
04728dac 80728580 |
Causes the player to have six hearts instead of four, but it is for some reason referred to as "Immune To Freeze" in the extras menu. This is a leftover from LEGO Batman: The Videogame. |
|
Hit Bubbles |
04728dac 807282b0 |
Causes onomatopoeias to fly out when the player punches objects or characters. This is a leftover from LEGO Batman: The Videogame, where it also went unused. |
|
Minikit Detector |
04728dac 807284a0 |
Causes arrows to appear on screen directing the player towards Minikits, and seems to be unfinished as where the green arrows indicating that a Minikit is directly in front of the player should be, is instead replaced with a green question mark. This is a leftover from every Traveller's Tales LEGO game to come before this one. Likely scrapped because Minikits (known as Artifacts in this and The Original Adventures) in this game are used as mandatory exits in Treasure Mode and Bonus Levels as opposed to optional collectables within regular levels. |
|
Power Brick Detector |
04728dac 80728300 |
Causes arrows to appear on screen directing the player towards Power Bricks. This functions slightly differently from how the Red Brick Detector extras from previous LEGO games, in that it also guides the player towards the blue and green bricks, which are exclusive to this game. The green arrow indicating that a Power Brick is right in front of the player is replaced by a question mark as well. |
|
Regenerate Hearts |
04728dac 80728490 |
Causes the player to slowly gain health as time goes on. This is a leftover from the previous four LEGO games by TT Games. |
