This page details one or more prototype versions of Dance Dance Revolution Extreme2.

A prototype of Dance Dance Revolution Extreme2 dated May 10, 2005 (roughly over two months before the final build) was released by Hidden Palace on March 20, 2021, as part of Project Deluge.

This prototype is documented on Hidden Palace.

General#

  • One of the game's typefaces was slightly adjusted. This can be mostly seen in the M, N and V letters.

Proto

Final

DDRextreme2-protomenu1.pngDDRextreme2-protomenu2.png

  • Only the Free Play mode has a proper icon.
  • The "Extra" mode, which is a demo for Karaoke Revolution Party in the final release, refers to the game as "Karaoke Revolution 4". It is also non-functional, redirecting to the main menu upon selection.
  • The "Lesson" and "My Room" modes crash the game.
  • When a song is unlocked/purchased, no messages are displayed.

Gameplay#

  • The "First Stage" voice line is always used when selecting a song in Free Play Mode. In the final game, it is never called.
  • Only 30 of the game's 74 songs have unique background videos. They are:
    • Licenses
      • Genie In A Bottle
      • Get Busy
      • IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT
    • New Konami originals
      • 1998
      • air
      • BE LOVIN
      • Can Be Real
      • CANDY
      • Colors (for EXTREME)
      • DAIKENKAI
      • Happy Wedding
      • Heaven is a '57 metallic gray (gimmix)
      • I Need You (Insideout Door Mix)
      • La Bamba
      • L'amour et la liberte (DDR Ver.)
      • Miracle Moon (L.E.D.LIGHT STYLE MIX)
      • Polovtsian Dances And Chorus

      • AFRONOVA (FROM NONSTOP MEGAMIX)
      • BRILLIANT 2U (K.O.G G3 MIX)
      • BURNIN' THE FLOOR (BLUE FIRE mix)
      • DYNAMITE RAVE (B4 ZA BEAT MIX)
      • Look To The Sky (Trance Mix)
    • Boss songs
      • PARANOIA survivor
      • PARANOIA survivor MAX
  • Pressing Select enables autoplay.
  • The Break Screen backgrounds are the same as the ones used in DDR FESTIVAL: Dance Dance Revolution.

Songs#

  • There is an additional song slot between LOOK AT US (Daddy DJ Remix) and My My My. Its banner assigns it to a song with ID "lose", and it displays no difficulty and groove radar info. When selected, it plays a duplicate of ABSOLUTE (Cuff -N- Stuff it Mix). The game's song masterlist, found within the game's .ELF executable, assigns the ID "lose" to Lose My Breath, the Destiny's Child song.
  • The song INJECTION OF LOVE (HINA MIX) instead plays INJECTION OF LOVE(e), an English version which would later appear in Dance Dance Revolution Strike.

Graphics#

  • The song PASSION OF LOVE does not have proper graphics yet, reusing those of ABSOLUTE (Cuff -N- Stuff it Mix).
  • Several more of the game's songs use different graphics and/or labels in the Song Selection and Gameplay screens:

While the title tag refers to the song as simply As The Rush Comes (GABRIEL & DRESDEN RADIO EDIT), the banner and background, which are completely different from the final version, completely omit the subtitle.

Strangely, the prototype banner lacks artist credits.

A graphical representation can be seen below, which shows the Single Difficult chart:

INJECTION OF LOVE
Not only the music data matches INJECTION OF LOVE(e), as would later be seen in Dance Dance Revolution Strike, its chart data is also the same.

INSERTiON(Machine Gun Kelly mix)
The song's initial BPM, which applies until beat 12 (measure 3 beat 0), was changed from 139.715 in the prototype to 139.816 in the final game.

MARIA(I believe...)
The song's initial BPM, which applies until beat 8 (measure 2 beat 0), was changed from 159.292 in the prototype to 158.94 in the final game.

Saturday Night Love
The song's initial BPM, which applies until beat 12 (measure 3 beat 0), was changed from 128.114 in the prototype to 128.266 in the final game.

SEXY PLANET
The song's offset was changed from -0.013 in the prototype to 0 in the final game, and its initial BPM, which applies until beat 4 (measure 1 beat 0), from 180.905 to 180.0.

Sweet Sweet ♥ Magic
The song's offset was changed from -0.02 in the prototype to 0 in the final game, and its initial BPM, which applies until beat 4 (measure 1 beat 0), from 180.0 to 178.218.

un deux trois
The song's initial BPM, which applies until beat 16 (measure 4 beat 0), was changed from 140.351 in the prototype to 140.488 in the final game.

AFRONOVA PRIMEVAL
A 200.0 BPM change was added to beat 332 (measure 83 beat 0) in the final chart. Both chart finishing events (02 03, which toggles the "CLEARED" message, and 02 04), which properly notes the end of the chart data) were also moved 4 beats later from beats 328 (measure 82 beat 0) and 332 (measure 83 beat 0), respectively.

BRILLIANT 2U
The way the chart is synced to the music is different between the prototype and the final game:
The prototype uses a positive offset of 1.42 second, and has an initial BPM of 150, making it so that the music starts on beat 4 (measure 1 beat 0), and the arrows on all charts on beat 28 (measure 7 beat 0). The final game, however, has an offset of 0 and an initial BPM of 145.897, as well as a BPM change to 150.0 on beat 16 (measure 4 beat 0), making it so that the arrows on all charts start 4 beats earlier.
The chart events 02 02 (toggles the "HERE WE GO" message), 02 05 (toggles edit/practice mode scrolling), 02 03 and 02 04 were also moved 4 beats earlier from beats 20, 20, 208 and 212, respectively.

DIVE
The chart events 01 xx (a time signature parameter), 02 01 (notes the start of the chart data), 02 02, and 02 05 were moved 4 beats earlier from beats 0, 0, 4, and 4, respectively. The 02 03 event was also moved a beat earlier from its original position of beat 241.

DYNAMITE RAVE
The song's offset was changed from -3.24 in the prototype to -3.233 in the final game. In addition, the time signature and chart start events were moved 4 beats earlier from their initial positions of beat -4.

Look To The Sky(True Color Mix)
The song's offset was changed from -0.013 in the prototype to 0 in the final game, and its initial BPM, which applies up to beat 4 (measure 1 beat 0), from 141.732 to 140.625.
In addition, the prototype data lacks the song's Single Beginner chart and contains blank slots for Challenge charts.

BURNIN' THE FLOOR(BLUE FIRE mix)
The song's offset was changed from -0.013 in the prototype to 0 in the final game, and its initial BPM, which applies up to beat 4 (measure 1 beat 0), from 154.506 to 153.846.
In addition, the prototype data contains Double Basic to Expert charts that are otherwise unused; Double Basic and Double Difficult are taken from THE REFLEX, a song from DDRMAX2, while Double Expert is an early version of the Double Challenge chart of the song ECSTASY (midnight blue mix), also from DDRMAX2. It's worth to note that these unused charts were previously seen in the Japanese PlayStation 2 port of that game.

DYNAMITE RAVE(B4 ZA BEAT MIX)
The song's offset was changed from -0.047 in the prototype to 0 in the final game, and its initial BPM, which applies up to beat 4 (measure 1 beat 0), from 172.249 to 167.442.
In addition, the prototype data contains Double Basic to Expert charts that are otherwise unused; this data is the same as the one BURNIN' THE FLOOR(BLUE FIRE mix) has.

Look To The Sky(Trance Mix)
The song's offset was changed from -0.013 in the prototype to 0 in the final game, and its initial BPM, which applies up to beat 8 (measure 2 beat 0), from 141.176 to 140.9.

SEXY PLANET(FROM NONSTOP MEGAMIX)
The song's offset was changed from -0.013 in the prototype to 0 in the final game. Its BPM values were also changed, as noted below:

In addition, the prototype data contains Double Basic to Expert charts which are otherwise unused. These charts are directly lifted from DIVE TO THE NIGHT, another song from DDRMAX2.

Dance Master Mode#

  • None of the missions have special requirements to be cleared.
  • Map B has a completely different layout compared to the final game. This layout also prevents it from being completed.

DDRextreme2-protoworldmap1.pngDDRextreme2-protoworldmap2.png
DDRextreme2-protoworldmap3.pngDDRextreme2-protoworldmap4.png

  • Proper voice calls for clearing a mission have not been implemented yet; the game always calls one of the "Stage Failed" sounds.
  • When starting a mission, only the area and level numbers are shown.
  • In the Boss Song Completion screen, the game's title is misspelled as "Dance Dance Revolution Extraeme2", which was fixed on the final release.

Workout Mode#

  • Most of the character icons are placeholders. Those that are not also differ from the final version.

Proto

Final

Advanced Mode#

  • While the graphics and messages are garbled, the mode is mostly operational.
    • If the Dancer Display option is set to Off, the game will redirect to the Song Selection menu instead of the Course Selection menu. Selecting any of the songs crashes the game.
  • The THE FREEZER, Trick, Slow-Mix, Supersonic, DARKNESS, JUMP! JUMP! JUMP!, HIGH VOLTAGE and Secret Arrow courses have not been properly implemented yet, being duplicates of other existing courses.
  • The RMX of TRUTH courses are the central point of two glitches:
    • Choosing the courses on the Difficult setting freezes the game.
    • When playing in the Normal setting, reaching the songs Look To The Sky (Trance Mix) on RMX of TRUTH 1, and AFRONOVA(FROM NONSTOP MEGAMIX) on RMX of TRUTH 2, also crash the game. However, playing on Double mode is a workaround for the latter song, as an otherwise unused Heavy chart is loaded.
  • Some courses use different songs:

Debugging Data#

Unlike in the retail release, the debugging data has not yet been stripped out, and can be extracted. Like in prior Playstation2 DanceDanceRevolution titles, the data is in the DWARF 1 debugging format. This game seems to have the most debugging data of any Dance Dance Revolution title - preview build or retail build - with a whopping 5,632kb (or 5.49MB) of data

Unused Audio#

The game's data has unused audio files for the following songs:

  • A Stupid Barber
  • BABY BABY GIMME YOUR LOVE
  • Try 2 Luv. U

-

Leftover DWARF 1.0/1.1 symbol data left in the executable
