Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc is the third installment of the Rayman series. In this game, Rayman helps take down an army of hooded lums known as "Hoodlums" (get it) who are attacking his world, so he decides to step and fight back, helped by his friends Murfy (a green fly) and Globox (a blue frog-like character) who just so happens to have swallowed the main bad guy. Whew.

Debugging Features#

There are two debugging features mistakenly left in the game, both accessible by pressing R+Start. The first is in the first part of "The Fairy Council" (the first level in the game). Holding R+Start will cause Murfy to stop flying until the player lets go.

The second is in the fourth part of "Desert of the Knaaren". Pressing R+Start will cause the text "Salle 01" ("Room 01") to appear in the bottom left of the screen. If the player then holds the R button and presses Up or Down on the D-Pad, the number can be advanced up to 5. Holding R and pressing Left on the D-Pad will then cause Rayman to be teleported to a specific location, depending on what number was displayed.

Unused Characters#

At the Tower of the Leptys, there is a secret room located right before the final boss, which contains three unused creatures: the Xowar, a blue Bonton and a Glute. When the player has accumilated a total score of 43,001 points throughout the level, this room will become accessible.

Xowar#

A closer view of the Xowar.

The Xowar is a gorilla-like creature that was meant to be a boss in Clearleaf Forest. Additionally, there would be a chase sequence in which Rayman had to escape from the Xowar, whilist avoiding obstacles along the way (similarly with Foutch in Rayman 2). Due to its massive size the developers had a difficult time working with the creature, leading it being replaced by Master Kaag. Another reason for dropping the Xowar was because there was nothing in the game's story to justify a pursuit.1 A minigame involving the Xowar was also removed likely for similar technical reasons.

This species of gigantic gorilla reached an advanced state of development: a 2D sketch, followed by 3D modelling, had been made of him. He was intended to be a boss from the Clearleaf Forest into which Rayman escaped during a race/chase (viewed from in front), while doing his best to avoid certain obstacles. Unfortunately, the programmers found this enormous character too difficult to "tame" because of his size. However, though he was set aside, the more skillful Rayman 3 players succeeded in detecting his presence in a hidden level at the end of the game.

Throughout the game, the Xowar is referenced a couple of times: once, on a wanted poster near Master Kaang's arena, and another in a loading screen where it can be partially seen.

Watch on YouTubeInside the game files, there are three unused animations for the Xowar: one where it hits the ground with its front legs, another where it beats its chest, and one where it collapses to the ground, presumably after being defeated.

Bonton#

An in-game model of a blue Bonton.

The Bontons (also known as Flabars) are creatures that resemble a hybrid between a kangaroo and a goat. There are different varations of them and are used by the Sylkins and the Hoodlums as livestock for their wool. The Bontons would play a crucial role in the game, as Rayman could mount these creatures and use them for various purposes such as ramming down doors or getting to otherwise unreachable areas.

This big furry creature was initially intended to play an important role in Rayman's adventure, serving to introduce "puzzle" elements. Depending on its various physical attributes (horns, wings, trunk, very thick fur, etc.), the Flabar had the very precise function of unblocking the player in the level. For example, Rayman could make the horned Flabars charge to ram down certain doors, or fly on the backs of the winged ones to reach otherwise inaccessible places. But since the game design for this creature was unsatisfactory, in the end it was used only to supply the Hoodlums with raw material to make their clothing (as the introduction to the game shows).

Glute#

An in-game model of a Glute.

Glutes are tiny blue birds with a long yellow beak, webbed feet and a swirly tail. Devoid of wings, they move by jumping around like grasshopers. It is unknown if they were meant to play an important role in the game or act as simply background characters. Glutes are referenced often in the final game by characters, particularly from Globox who is not fond of them and tends to use their name in the form of a swear word (e.g. "Gaseous Glute").

Waterbug#

A waterbug that was originally supposed to be in The Bog of Murk. Comes with two animations.

Waiting animation of Waterbug. Swim animation of Waterbug.

Hoodloon#

A closer view of the Hoodloon.

The Hoodloon (also known as Kagouflap) is a flying Hoodlum that was originally meant to attack Rayman. He would fly over him and try charging at him with his helmet to strike him down. This behaviour was scrapped however, due to the game's camera having problems following his movements. As a result, the Hoodloon was replaced by the Kagustick (Hoodstormer), making the latter the only regular flying mob in the game.

The Hoodloon appears briefly in the Summit Beyond the Clouds as a background character. He can be seen carrying around some Hoodmonger Officers and cannot be killed if the player tries to hit him.

This character's attack was fairly simple: equipped with a metal helmet, he flew over Rayman, dealing out devastating "ball strikes". However, there was one obvious presentation problem with the character, linked to the choice of cameras. Furthermore, choices had to be made from all the Hoodlums on offer and, in the end, it was the Kagustick who was retained in preference to the Kagouflap.

Cut Leptys Statue Behavior#

Watch on YouTubeAs seen in the promotional trailer included in the final game, the Leptys statue in the Desert of the Knaaren was meant to attack Rayman by casting lightning from its eyes, thus making the platforming section even more difficult. The code for this behaviour is still present in the game's files and can be reactivated on the PC version.

Unused Minigames#

Digging through the game's files, it was discovered that two minigames went unused in the final release. The only evidence that remains of these minigames are their descriptions which can be found in the fix.lvl file.

Chess Minigame#

The minigame would likely play similar to chess in terms of rules, with exception of the player throwing plums instead of moving pawns.

Just like playing chess, except you throw plums to zap Hoodlums instead of moving pawns to put the king in check. To move, use the left analog stick. To kick the plum, press the fire button. To quit, press look mode button. To move, use the left analog stick. To jump, press the jump button. To shoot press the shoot button.

Xowar Minigame#

Based on the description, this was probably a recycled version of the scrapped chase segment with the Xowar, in which Rayman had to run away from the creature while constantly dodging any incoming obstacles.

The Xowar is the kindest of creatures. Convinced that Rayman suffers through not having arms and legs, he runs after him to put an end to his torment. To move, use the left analog stick. To jump, press the jump button.

Exclusive Content#

The GameCube version of Rayman 3 features three exclusive minigames:

Mad Trax#

Watch on YouTubeMad Trax is one of the three minigames exclusive to the GameCube version of Rayman 3 and it can only be played by two players. The players must connect a Game Boy Advance to the GameCube via an official Nintendo link cable in order to play. When both consoles are connected, the minigame can be played.

The GameCube player controls a mini-sized Rayman in his shoe like in the main game and must manoeuvre through a racecourse while collecting gems along the way. While this player's actions are displayed on the TV screen, the GBA player will play a game involving falling blocks similar to Tetris and must form a road for the other player to progress. Both players must co-operate in this minigame in order to win.

2D Nightmare#

Watch on YouTube2D Nightmare is the second minigame exclusive to the GameCube version of Rayman 3. It was intended to be unlocked by connecting the GameCube to a copy of Rayman 3 (GBA) with every level complete. Unfortunately, due to a bug in the GBA version that causes the game to not save the completion state of the final level, 2D Nightmare is inaccessible without using cheats. Similar to the unlockable 2D Madness, 2D Nightmare is a sidescroller minigame set in the world of the first Rayman game. 2D Nightmare, however, takes place in Picture City, while 2D Madness takes place in The Dream Forest.

It can be accessed by enabling these Action Replay codes, then loading a save:

Alternatively, you can access this minigame by inputting a different code which unlocks all bonus
minigames and extra videos.

Wheelis#

Watch on YouTubeWheelis is the third and final minigame exclusive to the GameCube version of Rayman 3. It's unlocked once the player has reached 350,000 or more total score. Four players are required to play this with two GameCube controllers and two Game Boy Advance consoles, both of which must be connected to the GameCube.

Gameplay-wise, Wheelis is very similar to Mad Trax. The players are divided into two teams of two, each team with a GameCube and GBA player. Each GBA player must form a path of laying blocks which is driven along by their teammate, while destroying meteors that block the way with missiles. The GameCube players must race to the end goal as fast as possible while staying on the platforms and reaching checkpoints. Falling off the platforms will respawn the racer at the last checkpoint.

Test Map#

To do:
Is this really not possible to be loaded? I tried replacing just the sectors with another level, and the level that was working crashed, so it's likely the files are gone.
Hey other person here, using Raymap I was able to see that the test map seems to be an early version of the minigame Wheelis, albeit with some quirks. if someone could verify this with more than just Raymap and/or get some screenshots of the geometry and collision and update this section in general that would be very good.

Present only in the GameCube version is a test map folder named "test", however, a current way to access it is unknown. It's likely that it was meant to be a test map for Mad Trax because its textures are there and the test map is only present in the GameCube version.

Early Levels#

Watch on YouTubeThe third and fourth parts of the world "The Bog of Murk" appear to have originally been the same map, but ended up being separated. However, both parts have a prototype copy of the other where only a few gems are present, some elements like screws are non-functional, and there aren't any enemies or cages. These areas can be accessed in-game with hacks or glitches.

Unused Items#

To do:
The plum one was just an exception, the item replacing is pretty unclear from my point of view, at least from what I tried. -Got4n

Watch on YouTube

There's an unused trap plum. It was scrapped for unknown reasons. It looks like it was a plum that if the player picks, he'd be trapped by the enemy.

Hidden Message#

At offset 0x302E0 there is a rather vulgar message, which is based off an in-game dialogue from a Teensy warning Rayman about encountering the Knaaren.

Listen carefully, Fat Fuck. Never let the Knaaren get close to you. You heard me? Never!
Grasshopper, as we price peace above victory, there is a method for dealing with force... Run away!
Seems like you're a quick learner who needs a lot of explaining aren't you ? RUN AWAY !!!Jeeez, the fourth time!
You're a producer aren't you?
