Rayman Raving Rabbids (Nintendo DS)

This article has a talk page!

This page details one or more prototype versions of Rayman Raving Rabbids (Nintendo DS).

The entire source code for the DS port of Rayman Raving Rabbids was uploaded onto the Internet Archive on February 4th, 2022. Among the source code is a very early build of the game. Interestingly, gameplay in said prototype is virtually identical to the Challenge levels in the final game; Rayman runs automatically while you use elemental powers to clear obstacles for him, though here, instead of using costumes, Rayman has the power to transform into the Elemental Guardians himself.

It's unknown if it started out as a completely original project or if it's related to Phoenix Studios' cancelled Rayman 4 project, though given the fact that the Rabbids are completely absent and the transformation mechanic bearing some similarities to released concept art for said game, they're most likely related.

Debugging Content#

The Cheat tab in the options menu contains some debug options, though only "Flying" works.

Flying#

Activates a freefly mode and changes the perspective in the process. Pressing Select turns it off, and softlocks the game in the process.

This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: Is it possible to play as this version of Rayman?

Interestingly, turning it back on again after the softlock swaps the two screens and reveals Rayman's normal model!

Level Skip#

Pressing Select + L will skip to the next level.

FPS Counter#

Holding L + R and pressing X will bring up an FPS counter.

Level Select#

A level select option is present in the options menu, though all three of the options take you to Level 1.

Levels#

There are five levels in the prototype, all of which appear to have been made for testing. All levels after Level 1 can only be accessed with the level skip cheat.

Level 1#

The largest and most complete level out of all of them. Features a large variety of objects and hazards. Appears to be impossible to complete due to the bridge (seen in the fourth screenshot) not functioning properly.

Level 2#

RRRDS_Proto_Level2_1.png Hey there. RRRDS_Proto_Level2_3.png Uh oh.

A level which appears to have been made to test the Fire form. Every enemy and obstacle the Fire form can interact with is present here. Near the end of the level, a cage can be found hanging from the ceiling. Tapping on it will make it drop down to the ground like the trophies in the final game. The wall at the end of the level has no collision.

Level 3#

Something tells me that's not water... Sorry Rayman. No way out of this one.

Uses the same layout as the previous level, except there's a puddle halfway through which only the Water form can interact with.

Level 4#

Once again, uses the same layout as the other two levels, featuring objects only the Earth form can interact with. The wall at the end doesn't have collision.

Level 5#

A level featuring a large robotic Rayman who can shoot ammo and missiles by tapping the Touch Screen. Fuel and health are constantly going down, but can be increased by pressing B and decreased by pressing A. This level resembles the Rayman Gear levels in the final game.
