To do:
Unused graphics:

  • Near the end of the ROM are unused graphics of the Hall Monitor badge (palette is unknown). Based on its location and size, it was probably meant for a cutscene that would have played after getting the Hall Monitor outfit. No text exists in the ROM corresponding to this supposed cutscene.

Setting RAM address 0xC247 to any non-zero value enables what seems to be some sort of demo mode (nothing happens if you wait on the title screen for a extended period of time).

SpongeBob SquarePants: Legend of the Lost Spatula is SpongeBob's first solo video game outing released on a video game console instead of the web. SpongeBob searches for four magic oven knobs that will open the way to the Flying Dutchman's underworld (that he has), where he can take the Dutchman's Golden Spatula (that he has) and make Mr. Krabs lots of mon— er, become the world's greatest fry cook. On his adventure, he faces reskins of the same four enemies, weird bosses with no connection to the rest of the series, and incredibly awkward jump physics, backed by an inexplicably boppin' soundtrack.

Because of how early in the series it was made, this is one of the very, very few SpongeBob games where Plankton isn't the villain.

Debugging Features#

Stage Select/All Items#

Gbcspongebobls-stage.png Gbcspongebobls-items.png

Enter the password D3BVG-M0D3 (Debug Mode) and the game will start with a stage select added to the sub-screen, as well as give you all the items in the game.

Alternately, enter -THQ-0NLY- (THQ Only, referring to the publisher) for the stage select or 1T3MS4FR33 (Items For Free) for all items.

Note that increasing and resetting the "stage number" reflects on how far into the game the player is in regards to a specific area, with 1 being the beginning and higher numbers being later in the game.

Unused Text#

Equip item

At 0x584D is this string found among the text for the item selection screen. This should not be confused with the "Equip item" text that is used on the "Safety First" screen; which is found at 0x5299 in the ROM.

Unused Room#

To do:
There may be more unused rooms.

There is an inaccessible room off to the right of the Outer Town map. It can be accessed by using a hex editor and changing the value 04A945 to 00, 01, or 05. From the looks of it, it appears to resemble SpongeBob's living room from the Season 1 episode "Jellyfish Jam".

Vicarious Visions' next SpongeBob game actually did feature a minigame based on the episode, so it's possible that it was planned for this game first.

Sound Engine Credits#

Found at 0xF4030 are developer credits for the game's audio engine.
