Characters

This is a sub-page of Grand Theft Auto IV/The Lost and Damned.

Main Characters#

Most characters have leftovers of their early design in their specular textures, which is confirmed by pre-release materials.

The best example here is Jim Fitzgerald, whose specular texture is completely consistent with his early appearance, which was captured not only on one of the pre-release screenshot, but also in his picture from the game files.

Jim Fitzgerald#

Final

Jim had different voicemail at some time, which only has subtitles left.

    E1AP_JIM_1A = E1AP_BA

Johnny Klebitz#

Initially, Johnny had his appearance from IV, which was captured by the developers in one of the photos in the Lost clubhouse.

Jason Michaels#

Another character who completely carried over his appearance from IV, but unlike Johnny, he had this appearance for enough time to appear both on pre-release screenshot and on his photo from the game files.

Billy Grey#

Just like Jim, Billy also did not had any tattoos initially, like most of the main Lost members.

Early

Final

Billy had different voicemail at some time, which only has subtitles left.

    E1AP_BILLY_1 = ~z~ANSWER PHONE: I don't want to talk to you just now.
    E1AP_BILLY_1A = E1AP_AA

Brian Jeremy#

It seems that the developers decided that one tattoo was not enough for Brian, and gave him more. Also, according to the pre-release screenshot, it appears that for some time Brian didn't had glasses.

Early

Final

Ashley Butler#

Her face was cleaner initially, which the developers decided to change given the lifestyle she leads throughout the game.

Early

Final

The only time her early face can be seen is in a portrait in her apartment, from which it also can be noted that she had slightly different hairstyle.

Angus Martin#

His face and jacket originally had less detail.

Terry Thorpe#

Terry's original appearance was very different, as can be seen in one of the pre-release screenshot. Pre-release screenshot

The texture of his early vest was found in files, but the model was completely removed, same goes for his early face.

Dave Grossman#

The controversial one; like the rest of the characters, his specular textures lacking some details

His in-game model has several unused accessories, none of which are used by him as he only appears couple times in the game. The cutscene model only has a replica of the black sunglasses, which are also unused.

Since his in-game model only appears once near the GL&S building, his biker look goes unused.

Thomas Stubbs III#

According to the leaked TLAD debug text sources, it can be found out that the developers originally referred to Stubbs as a Corrupt Politician, there is even an unused map blip icon left in the files, presumably it was used initially before they made the new one.

The naked model of Tom Stubbs has an unused glasses model.

Malc#

His hairstyle had no stripes originally.

Desean#

Desean's vest originally did not had the Uptown Riders logo on the back.

Early

Final

Both the in-game and cutscene models have an unused glasses.

Ray Boccino#

Ray had different voicemail at some time, which only had subtitles left.

    E1AP_RAY_1 = ~z~ANSWER PHONE: Phone later.
    E1AP_RAY_1A = E1AP_RA

However, this appears to be only one of the variations; in the audio file of the Collector's Item mission, an unused voicemail from Ray can be found.

Minor Characters#

Chad#

Despite being called Chad in the game, his model in the game files named completely different - Paul Lamont.

Pretty Boy#

Pretty Boy has an unused glasses model that were apparently supposed to be used on Clean and Serene mission.

Removed Characters#

Leila#

Leila was a character who featured in the early plot of TLAD, who in the final version of the game is only occasionally mentioned by Ashley in Diamonds in the Rough mission, supposedly she was Johnny's ex-girlfriend. But her role was much more than just mentioning, she was supposed to give the player missions, as evidenced by her map blip leftover and the missions themselves that were found in the american.gxt file, and also some leaked text sources from TLAD debug files.

Not only that, Ashley's apartment seems to share assets with Leila's apartment, as some textures reference Leila, while others reference Ashley. Also, Leila appeared to be a contact on Johnny's phone, according to the removed voicemail from which only subtitles left.

    E1AP_LEILA_1 = ~z~I'm on the computer. Email me instead.
    E1AP_LEILA_1A = E1AP_CA

And lastly, Leila has an entry in the Police Computer Database (in both Grand Theft Auto IV and its episodes) that lists her as a "known associate of the Lost OMC" and Johnny's "old lady." Towards the end of the Grand Theft Auto IV story, her entry is updated to indicate that she is now deceased.
