Characters

This is a sub-page of Grand Theft Auto IV.

Main Characters#

Most characters have leftovers of their early design in their specular textures, which is confirmed by pre-release materials, and of course it's worth starting with the protagonist himself - Niko Bellic.

Niko Bellic#

His specular texture of the face is completely consistent with his early appearance that was shown on some pre-release screenshots.

Early

Final

What can be noted:

  • The tongue mapping was completely different;
  • The mouth corners were different, which is exactly what can be seen on the pre-release screenshot.

From the shown pre-release screenshot, it can be noted that the face normal map texture was much stronger than in final.

For whatever reason, Niko's head model in EFLC has some differences comparing with main game

EFLC

IV

This might be a slightly early version of Niko's head texture, considering it's lacking some details that are present in the final version.

Roman Bellic#

On artworks, in-game textures and some pre-release screenshots, Roman had a different looking tracksuit.

Artwork

Pre-release Screenshot

Texture

The specular texture still has early look of the tracksuit.

Early

Final

On one of the artworks, Roman's casual outfit had different pants, that appears to be a sweatpants according by its beige color.

In the game files, the sweatpants had a beat-up variation, that most likely meant to be used in Bleed Out mission.

Shirt was also different, according to the in-game photo, it had a different color.

Mallorie#

Not much is known about Mallorie, but her look from the picture in Roman's safehouse shows some parts of her early design:

  • Her hairstyle was completely different;
  • The wedding suit was purple instead of white;
  • She doesn't wear any glasses.

Speaking of glasses, her in game model has an unused glasses model.

Michelle#

The earliest look of Michelle was captured only on the artwork, where her hairstyle was completely different.

What's interesting about this design is that head model of the Michelle seems to have this early hairstyle desing, only its hidden by a new hairstyle.

Hairstyle Applied

Hairstyle Removed

Michelle had a different face, which can be seen on both the game's third trailer and on one of the pre-release screenshots.

Specular texture of the Michelle's face has some slight differences that could be connected with her early face design

Early

Final

In the texture file of cutscene Michelle model, there is a texture of some unknown extra that wasn't shown anywhere, model of which no longer exist.

Not only that, there is also unused glasses for in-game Michelle model.

Lastly, the specular texture of the pants shows that shoes were also different for Michelle, although this variation is still used in the game but by Angie Pegorino.

Early

Final

Little Jacob#

Just like Niko, Jacob was looking much older due to different normal map face texture. Pre-release screenshot

From that screenshot also can be assumed that Jacob didn't had any glasses initially, however, this is the only case where he appears without his glasses, in all artworks with him he always had glasses, although the color was different.

Vladimir Glebov#

Artwork of Vladimir Glebov shows that he had completely different clothes, which allowed to see some of the tattoos that were hidden by his final look.

Torso Applied

Specular texture of the torso shows one detail that was removed from the actual texture.

Dimitri Rascalov#

Just like Vlad, Dimitri appears to be having tattoo that is hidden by his suit

Torso Applied

Torso Removed

Mikhail Faustin#

The image of earlies head model of Mikhail Faustin can be found in the game files as render of his model. From differences there is hairstyle, lips, and the head itself looks wider that final one.

Just like Vlad and Dimitri, Mikhail Faustin also has his tattoos hidden by clothes.

GTAIV_FaustinHiddenTattoo1.png GTAIV_FaustinHiddenTattoo3.png

Despite being hidden, the developers for some reason bothered with one of the tattoos that initially looked completely different according to the render of Faustin's head from the game's artbook.

Some pictures in Faustin's house shows both early and final appearance of his suit.

Early

Final

For some reason there is a difference between cutscene and in-game model of pants, where cutscene model is lacking of unique belt texture, when ingame model has it applied correctly.

Cutscene

In-game

Brucie Kibbutz#

According to main.sco file, Brucie had a completely different surname - Chalmers.

       StrCopy( ref cVar3, "PD_BRUCIE", 16 );
       StrCopy( ref cVar7, "PD_CHALMERS", 16 );

Brucie's Executive Lifestyle Autos internet banner shows that his tracksuit had different colours, which can also be seen on his mugshot at the police computer.

Specular texture of the Brucie's torso shows that he was lacking some of the tattoos.

Early

Final

The tracksuit looked different, as evidenced by the specular texture.

Early

Final

Manny's cutscene model has even more accessories, such as a gold watch and bracelets, both of these remain unused.

GTAIV_km_manymixpic1.png GTAIV_km_manymixpic2.png

Both artwork and pre-release screenshot shows that Playboy X originally had different looking hoodie.

Francis McReary#

Specular texture of Francis' face has various details that looks slightly different from his actual face.

Early

Final

Packie McReary#

The artwork, speculare texture and pre-release screenshot shows that Packie's shirt was striped, in the final the stripes were removed.

Early

Final

Packie's shoes originally featured a Nike logo, which only remained on the specular texture. This isn't the only instance of real-life brands appearing on characters' clothing.

Early

Final

Michael Keane#

Specular texture of the face shows that Michael was lacking beard.

Early

Final

The jacket had some kind of logo that was removed, but still exist only on specular texture.

Early

Final

Gordon Sargent#

Gordon got some noticeable changes regarding his face. His specular texture shows many details that differs with his final appearance, its also strange why specular texture was lacking ears, probably it was still not finished or something else.

Early

Final

But even his final face has some differences in the game. For some reason, his face in the cutscene appears noticeably darker and has some details that are missing from his in-game model, he also meant to be having some kind of yellow earring.

Cutscene

In-game

The jacket was lacking of logo according to the specular texture.

Early

Final

Cutscene

In-game

Cutscene model of Phil contains an unused texture of backpack that looks completely different from the one that in-game model uses.

Cutscene

In-game

Jimmy Pegorino#

Just like Niko, Jimmy Pegorino got some changes regarding tongue mapping and lips, it also looks like ears texture was mapped more smoothly in comparison with final one.

Early

Final

Only in-game model has unused textures of pants and suit, they look similar to the ones that Jimmy Pegorino already wears just in different colors.

GTAIV_uppr_diff_000_b_uni_ig_jimmy.png GTAIV_lowr_diff_000_b_whi_ig_jimmy.png

For some reason, cutscene model of Jimmy Pegorino has an unused backpack texture, and both appear to be early versions.

Version 1

Version 2

Final

Second version of backpack was most likely from the time where Niko weared different backpack, this model still used on Pegorino's Pride mission as a prop that Jimmy Pegorino gives to Pavanos.

Random Encounters#

Badman#

According to both the second trailer of the game and artwork, Badman originally didn't wear his hat.

Ilyena Faustin#

Ilyena appears to be looking slightly older according to her face specular texture, she also had different hairstyle texture, tho color was probably the same.

Early

Final

Cherise Glover#

In early and unused design of the Ruff Rider mission, Cherise is referred to as Bernice.

    0x2A55C02A = ~s~ Find Jayvon and Bernice in the ~y~arcade~s~!

Both cutscene and in-game models has this character named as Charise, which could be a simple mistake in naming.

Clarence Little#

An unused phonecall from Francis reveals Clarence's early surname that was not Little but Jones instead.

Subtitle

Francis

I just heard that Clarence Jones - that no good, kid killing, drug dealer I paid you to whack - is still alive.

Actually, I ain't heard nothing. I've seen him walking down Vauxite Street in the middle of the day.

Fuck, I shoulda just shot him in the line of duty.

Niko

He said he'd get outta town. I thought that'd be enough for you.

Francis

You're a fucking Weazel, Niko. I trusted your word and you screwed me. Goodbye.

Face texture shows that Clarence meant to be wearing an earring with diamond, however the head model is lacking of such detail.

Marnie Allen#

Marnie's face was cleaner and tattoo-free, as evidenced by her specular texture.

Early

Final

ig_marnie_p.wtd file contains a pink glasses texture, model of which not present, though it is unclear whether this was a leftover of early Marnie design, or it was just a mistake where some developer added this texture accidentally.

Sara#

In pedprops.img cutscene model of Sara has an unused model of glasses, interestingly, her in-game model does not have these glasses at all.

Gracie Ancelotti#

An unused hat model that Gracie never wears in the game.

Tramp#

A tramp that appears only in some cutscenes in IV and TBoGT supposed to be wearing a hat.

Jason Michaels#

Jason was meant to wear a helmet, however that helmet would look out of place because of the cutscene with Faustin's daughter in No Love Lost mission.

French Tom#

An unused duplicate model of French Tom has unused glasses model.

Jorge#

Jorge supposed to have unique model instead of the random Spanish Lords gang member one, this can be confirmed by line leftover from peds.ide file.

CS_Jorge,       null,           CIVMALE,        move_player,        GESTURES@MALE,      GESTURES@M_PHONE,   FACIALS@M_HI,       visemes@m_hi,       0,      move_player,        null,           -1,-1,      PED_TYPE_PLAYER,    JORGE_PVG,      VOICE_PLY_CR

Doctor#

A doctor that appears on Have a Heart mission supposed to be wearing glasses.

Blackmailer#

Blackmailer supposed to be wearing a black cap on Call and Collect mission. Interestingly, his model is called as thief, maybe initial plot was about him stealing something?

Tom Goldberg#

The photo of Tom Goldberg in the Goldberg, Ligner & Shyster building on the PC version references his early appearance.

Early

Final

Tuna#

Tuna meant to wear both glasses and cap, most likely in his last appearance on Meltdown mission.

Unused Anthony Hair Texture

Used Kate Hair Texture

Mohammed#

Mohammed (a Roman's taxi driver) has an unused cap model.

Most Wanted Criminals#

Maxwell Caughlin#

According to the main.sco file, Maxwell Caughlin had a different surname - Caddy.

Used sub_7603( 1, "PD_CAUGHLIN", "PD_MAXWELL", "PDB_ADDR_0", 569.57800000, 1501.85500000, 14.70980000, "PDB_ADDR_0", 569.57800000, 1501.85500000, 14.70980000, 1400, 24, 12 );

Unused sub_7603( 0, "PD_CADDY", "PD_MAXWELL", "PDB_ADDR_0", 569.57800000, 1501.85500000, 14.70980000, "PDB_ADDR_0", 569.57800000, 1501.85500000, 14.70980000, 2000, 24, 12 );

Tommy Francovic#

Similar to Maxwell, Tommy Francovic has a different surname in mostwanted.sco file, where instead of Francovic there is Francini.

Used if ((COMPARE_STRING( ref l_U305, "PD_TOMMY" )) AND (COMPARE_STRING( ref l_U309, "PD_FRANCOVIC" )))

Unused if ((COMPARE_STRING( ref l_U305, "PD_TOMMY" )) AND (COMPARE_STRING( ref l_U309, "PD_FRANCINI" )))

Danny Hatmaker#

According to the policedb.wtd file, Danny's appearance was completely different, instead of being a member of Hustlers gang, he was a Jamaican.

Frederick Harrison#

The most complicated criminal himself. The complication starts with him named completely different - Wilbert Wetterer, a proof to that is the line of code from mostwanted.sco file, where Wilbert Wetterer line gets either ignored or overwritten by Frederick Harrison.

if ((COMPARE_STRING( ref l_U305, "PD_FREDERICK" )) AND (COMPARE_STRING( ref l_U309, "PD_HARRISON" )))
{
    l_U180 = 31;
}
if ((COMPARE_STRING( ref l_U305, "PD_WILBERT" )) AND (COMPARE_STRING( ref l_U309, "PD_WETTERER" )))
{
    l_U180 = 31;
}

Second thing is mugshots, where both Frederick and Wilbert have their own unique mugshots, despite being one person.

Wilbert Wetterer

Frederick Harrison

And the last thing is poster from police station in Algonquin, where developers used mugshot of Frederick Harrison and a name Wilbert Wetterer, apparently to confuse the investigation.

Removed Characters#

Removed Most Wanted Criminals#

There are some unused most wanted criminals listed in mostwanted.sco file, but never appear in the game as targets that player can find and deal with.

Bradly Narlock#

The first removed most wanted criminal that was supposed to appear somewhere in Algonquin. He listed after Shon Kikuchi and that's it.

if ((COMPARE_STRING( ref l_U305, "PD_BRADLY" )) AND (COMPARE_STRING( ref l_U309, "PD_NARLOCK" )))

Alyssa Funke#

Right after Bradly, there was supposed to be one and only female most wanted criminal. There is three mugshots of random female pedestrians when making a search through police computer, but which one of them supposed to be Alyssa is unknown, thought there is one mugshot that lacks of plate underneath, making it looks like mugshot was unfinished.

if ((COMPARE_STRING( ref l_U305, "PD_ALYSSA" )) AND (COMPARE_STRING( ref l_U309, "PD_FUNKE" )))

Cletus Luzell#

Still in Algonquin, another removed criminal.

if ((COMPARE_STRING( ref l_U305, "PD_CLETUS" )) AND (COMPARE_STRING( ref l_U309, "PD_LUZELL" )))

Dick Godley#

And another removed Algonquin criminal.

if ((COMPARE_STRING( ref l_U305, "PD_DICK" )) AND (COMPARE_STRING( ref l_U309, "PD_GODLEY" )))

Marty Connor#

The last Algonquin most wanted criminal. There is another criminal named Marty, but only in Alderney and with different surname - Boldenow. However, due to Connor being listed as not a duplicate of Boldenow, he should be counted as completely different fugitive.

if ((COMPARE_STRING( ref l_U305, "PD_MARTY" )) AND (COMPARE_STRING( ref l_U309, "PD_CONNOR" )))

Marcel Hevas#

This one is unique, he's not mentioned in any of the game .sco scripts, but his mugshot exist in policedb.wtd file, where developers named the mugshot with first and last name. It is also noteworthy that mugshot is lacking of plate underneath, making it looks like it was left unfinished.

There's also some mentions of him in american.gxt file, but these lines don't belong to any groups and they are just thrown among a bunch of other text, as if this character was never completed.

    0x5B7775EC = MARCEL
    0x1CB9E7C2 = HEVAS
