Scenic Ryuon, conveniently located north of Raja Temple, is home to the most renowned bar on Dezolis. Come on in and have a drink of non-specific beverage, then catch up on the latest news from Gyuna, the bartender who may or may not have an accent.
The owner of the bar is named
Gyuna and he knows the most
about the situation around
these parts.
If you want to know something
that's where you should go.
Translation Notes
Oh geeze. So in the Japanese version the Dezolisian calls Gyuna "事情通" (Jijoutsuu) meaning an expert in the background of a certain situation...
May Script
Two squared is...
the situation.
Final Script
Two fists is...
the best situation!
Translation Notes
...and then Raja says "2の自乗…ジジョウツー!", which is meant to be read as "tsuu no jijou...jijoutsuu!", a bit of wordplay that more or less translates to the May dialogue.
Looks like the editors couldn't think of a good pun here for later drafts...
Oh, you're a Parmanian.
Are you from the town of Tyler?
May Script
It looks like they've flown here from Motavia.
Final Script
It looks like they've flapped
all the way here from Motavia.
May Script
Arrgh!
Will you cut it out,
you old fart!
Final Script
Arrgh!
Will you cut it out,
you old fart?!
May Script
The 'Gumbious Temple' is
Dezolisians' source of pride.
It's the center of Dezolis,
and it's the pillar of support
for the hearts of Dezolisians!
Final Script
Gumbious Temple is
Dezolisians' source of pride.
It's the center of Dezolis,
and it's the pillar of support
for the hearts of Dezolisians!
What with this sudden snow
storm, the ability to travel
in and out of town tends to be
unreliable.
There seems to be many places
where the roads are obstructed
by ice!
Final Script
What with this snow storm,
the ability to travel in and
out of town is unreliable.
There are many places where
the roads are obstructed by ice!
Translation Notes
Once Raja leaves the party, all versions revert to the May script.
May Script
I don't know which I hate more
you are this snow!
August Script
Ice obstructions. Sounds pretty
...bothersome.
Final Script
On winter nights, we huddle so
tight, saying ice is really
nice... How's that!?
Translation Notes
So in the Japanese version, Raja says that he's already fed up with the snowstorm (雪嵐はもうコオリゴリじゃの!), but he combines korigori (Being fed up with something) with koori (ice). So it's another bad pun. Not sure what the May and August English drafts are going for here.
May & August Scripts
I knew it! I was just waiting
for you to say that!
You're so predictable!
People from all over Dezolis
come here and talk of all sorts
of things...
Gyuna listens to all this and
passes the information on...
This is where peoples' thoughts
gather together and then go out.
Final Script
People from all over Dezolis
come here and talk of all sorts
of things...
Gyuna listens to all this and
passes the information on...
This is where peoples' ideas
gather and are disseminated.
May Script
The owner here, Gyuna is very
knowledgeable, but he has a terrible old-fashioned accent!
Final Script
The owner here, Gyuna, is very
knowledgeable, but he has a terribly old-fashioned accent!
May Script
Aiee! What are you doing?
Boy, you're a suspicious
looking lot.
You're making my drink go sour.
Don't get too close.
Final Script
Aiee! What are you doing?
Boy, you're a suspicious-
looking lot.
You're making my drink go sour.
Don't get too close.
Gyuna
Intro:
Oh my, a first time customer.
Ah, you're friends of Raja.
In that case,
I'll tell you anything.
What do you want to know?
Snow Storm:
May Script
This snow storm started three
months ago, and hasn't stopped since.
It's been a terrible disaster,
hats being blown off all over
the place and lips getting
chapped!
Final Script
This snow storm started three
months ago, and hasn't stopped.
It's been a terrible disaster,
hats being blown off all over
the place and lips getting
chapped!
Translation Notes
You may notice at this point that Gyuna doesn't actually have an accent. In the Japanese script of Phantasy Star II, Dezolisians occasionally ended their sentences with the suffix -zura - this is used in the Nagano–Yamanashi–Shizuoka prefectures in Japan and seems to be perceived as a rural dialect. The English version of PSII made an attempt to localize this by having the Dezolisians say things like "dern" and "ain't.", and use double negatives.
Gyuna is the only Dezolisian in Phantasy Star IV that still uses the -zura suffix, and he uses it at the end of almost every sentence. The English version makes no attempt to preserve this, so he sounds no different than the other Dezolisians.
May Script
Hats...Lips?
Final Script
Hats? Lips?
Garuberk Tower:
It's said there's a tower
somewhere in Dezolis where
the demons live.
As the story goes, the tower
suddenly appeared overnight!
That's it! It's those demons
who are destroying the universe!
Algo is under a curse!
May Script
I wonder if...
what Raja says is true?
Final Script
Could what Raja says be true?
May Script
That, I don't know.
But, being what Raja is,
he may be sensing something.
Final Script
That I don't know.
But, Raja being what he is,
he may be sensing something.
And you have no idea at all
where the Garuberk Tower is?
May Script
All those who've seen it say
something different.
...all I can say is that's up
north somewhere.
Final Script
All who've seen it say
something different.
...All I can say is that it's
up north somewhere.
I see...
Raja:
May Script
I've known him a long time.
He's a weird one...but,
he's a skilled magician,
and he was well liked at 'Gumbious Temple.'
Final Script
I've known him a long time.
He's a weird one...but,
he's a skilled magician,
and he was well liked at
Gumbious Temple.
May Script
Wow.
I can't believe it.
That old man!
Final Script
Wow.
I can't believe it.
That old freak!?
Translation Notes
Whoa! Chaz got a rudeness injection in the final English script.
May Script
But, he was tricked by those
who were jealous of him,
and was banished into a rural
place like this.
Final Script
But, he was tricked by those
who were jealous of him,
and was banished to this rural
place.
Really...
It doesn't seem possible.
Actually Raja himself is quite
happy that he was able to get
away from that constrained
temple!
He's a good guy!
He's a good friend of mine!
