Main Dialogue#
Generic#
A generic goodbye line for Ulysses:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Enough talking, then. |
00133fcb |
These lines would be used when dismissing Ulysses from the player's party:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Watch Yourself. |
0015ec98 |
Ulysses |
The Mojave awaits. |
0015ec99 |
When trying to hire Ulysses:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
No need for me to watch an empty road and lose myself staring in flames. I'll walk with you. |
0015c52b |
Ulysses |
You've already got a shadow. You don't need any more company. If you find yourself alone again, circle back around, I'll be here. |

Introduction#
First Meeting#
This dialogue is for the player's first meeting with Ulysses, here he would muse on the player's reason for coming as far as Wolfhorn Ranch:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Figure whatever it was brought you here was important enough. |
0015ec83 |
Ulysses |
People don't wander miles for no reason at all unless they're touched in the head. And you may have been touched, but not that way. |
0015ec83 |
He could be asked about the ranch also:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
I don't. Place looks like a watched post except nobody keeping watch. Until that makes sense, not going to move. |
0015ec84 |
Ulysses |
Could have put out the fire I suppose. Just worried about the message it would send if I did. |
0015ec84 |
Here he speculates on the Courier's origin, while also providing some background on himself:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Neither you. Yet here we are. |
0015ec85 |
Ulysses |
Your boots got dust of the West on them, not just Mojave dust. So far West you've walked through twisters from the Divide. |
0015ec85 |
Ulysses |
I'm from East of the Colorado from one of the 19 tribes that fell to the bull. Now just a tribe of one. |
0015ec85 |
The player could also ask him about some possessions of his, that Ulysses says are to keep the spirits away. It is not clear what they are, but Ulysses would comment on the player's Pip-Boy in response:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Pieces of the old world. Like to keep them close. Keeps the spirits quiet. |
0015eca0 |
Ulysses |
Maybe that's why you've got that piece of the old world on your arm there. Helps make sense of things sometimes. |
0015eca0 |
If asked to use the fire:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Fire isn't mine, so share and share alike. I've no claim on it. |
0015ec8c |
Ulysses |
Didn't take you for someone who made their living on the Mojave's back, aside from walking on it. |
0015ec8c |
It seems the player could also ask him where he came from:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
East of the Colorado. My tribe had its home there before Caesar came. |
0015c52c |
A similar line:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
I'm out West because of the Legion. |
0015fa98 |
Observations About The Courier#
Ulysses would make a number of observations about the player as a part of his introduction. Some of these are dependent on the player's standing with the NCR and Legion.
Generic
These are a number of generic observations about the Courier's scars that apply to all players:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Got bullet scars, someone looks like they took a knife to parts of your face too. It's ok, that's not the kind of pretty I care about. |
0015ec8b |
Ulysses |
Maybe you want to get away from something, maybe find something. Whatever it is that's you and yours. |
0015ec8b |
He would speculate on the Courier's travels also:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Your boots have history. So does your face. |
0015ec9c |
Ulysses |
Got dust on your boots from places miles away, from places outside of the Mojave too. |
0015ec9c |
Ulysses |
Not exactly sure where you're from. But you walked a ways to get here. |
0015ec9c |
Caesar's Legion
At some point Ulysses would make an observation on the player's Legion disguise (if they were wearing one). This dialogue is in the April build as well, but the actual prompt to trigger it seems to be missing. Here Ulysses makes a comment on how he can see through the player's disguise:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
You walk like someone from the West. You were not raised in the East. It shows. |
0015c43a |
Ulysses |
It's rare for a legionnaire to walk this far West, and so openly. Most Legion camp East of the Colorado. |
0015c43a |
A set of responses that would've followed this comment. Some of these are slightly altered from what was found in the April build:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Player |
Then you heard wrong. |
|
Ulysses |
Don't know about that. Guess we'll see how things play out. You've got the spine for it at least. |
0013847f |
Player |
That an insult? |
|
Ulysses |
Only if you take it as an insult. Just making an observation. Next time I'll keep it to my self. |
0013848a |
Player |
I'm interested in joining them, actually. |
|
Ulysses |
Your decision, if they'll take you. It's on them. |
0013848b |
Player |
I don't need to join the Legion, just get by. |
|
Ulysses |
I hear you. I just don't want to be hearing it atop a telephone pole with your hands welcoming the sky with nails in them. |
0013848d |
Ulysses |
And that's their kindness if they catch you. Wouldn't wish that death on anyone, especially those that were just trying to get by. |
0013848d |
Player |
[Legion] These are my colors. |
|
Ulysses |
Must have joined recent, then. You've got the spine for it though, no doubting that. |
00138480 |
Ulysses |
Long way from home. Most of Caesar's legion was East of the river. |
00138480 |
Player |
It's not where, it's how you serve that matters to Caesar. |
|
Ulysses |
Truth in that. Just like Legion to say as much. |
00138489 |
Ulysses |
No offence, when I first spoke thought you'd been picking at Legion corpses. Lot of scavengers like that nowadays. |
00138489 |
Player |
You seem to know a lot about Legion standards. |
|
Ulysses |
I know less than some. Enough to know what they'll do to you when they catch on. |
00138483 |
Ulysses |
It's your life, though. Not trying to tell you how to live it. Just sharing my thoughts. |
00138483 |
Player |
What do you mean? |
|
Ulysses |
Your colors might fool a centurion, but the way you wear your gear tells a different story. You aren't from the East. |
00138483 |
Ulysses |
Your pace, stance, would have a decanus down on you like a wolf. Wouldn't mask your scent from legion hounds either, so I would take care if I were you. |
00138483 |
Player |
I'm not particular when it comes to my gear. |
|
Ulysses |
That much I can see. Others may not be so understanding. On both sides. |
00138487 |
Player |
That an insult? |
|
Ulysses |
Not to me. Legion catches you with those colors though, the sand will run red. |
00138488 |
This dialogue is specific to a female character:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Player |
I'm interested in joining them, actually. |
|
Ulysses |
I think the curve of your hips rules that out. Legion doesn't let women take up machetes unless they want farming done. |
0013848c |
Ulysses |
That's them though. I don't have a problem with whoever is carrying a weapon, long as it's not pointed at me. |
0013848c |
Player |
[Legion] These are my colors. |
|
Ulysses |
Tell Caesar that. Last I heard you needed a weapon between your legs to carry one for Caesar. |
00138481 |
Player |
In that case, I doubt you've *ever* seen a real weapon. |
|
Ulysses |
Now what are you...? Eh, fair enough. I challenged your manhood, now you challenge mine. |
00138484 |
Player |
It's how you serve that matters to Caesar. |
|
Ulysses |
Hmm, guess the bear's already winning if Caesar's letting you raise a sword in his name. |
00138482 |
New California Republic
Ulysses has some dialogue to comment on an NCR disguise as well. He has fewer lines to comment on an NCR disguise than a Legion one, many of the responses from the April build are absent here as well. There doesn't seem to be a prompt to lead into these lines, and some of them are slightly modified when compared with the April build:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Player |
[NCR] What makes you think I'm from the Republic? |
|
Ulysses |
You wear the bear's colors, unless that gear isn't yours. If you took them from a soldier, I'm not judging you. |
001385c2 |
Player |
[NCR] I'd watch that tone when you talk about NCR. |
|
Ulysses |
If you do, that's why I'm here alone. No offense meant though. I think traffic's got me on edge. |
001385ba |
Player |
Is that a complaint? |
|
Ulysses |
Not unless Rangers are in waiting in the rocks. Republic's a rare sight around here. That isn't unusual. |
001385b7 |
Ulysses |
I think there's been some trouble. Maybe something you and your New California need to deal with. |
001385b7 |
Player |
[NCR] If it's a military matter maybe I can help. |
|
Ulysses |
That's a rare answer. It's unfortunate only I can hear it, not those who give you your orders. |
001385bc |
Ulysses |
Still, perhaps it's good you came along when you did. |
001385bc |
Player |
It comes to a fight, they'll get one. |
|
Ulysses |
You and the bear have it all in hand. I see it everywhere I go. |
{{collapse| tempvdialogueu_vdialogueulysse_00138486 |
Ulysses |
Though you look more capable than most that have tried. They're on telephone poles now, talking to God. |
00138486 |
This line seems to be present in the July build only, but doesn't really fit with the others. It suggests the above sequence may have been in the process of being changed:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
And which head of the bear is offering? No I don't need any help. You are the only traveler I've seen. |
0015c43f |
Smoke At Nipton#
After a brief conversation, the player would learn that Ulysses is waiting for news from Nipton. Here he brings to the player's attention the trouble at Nipton. There are a few lines for this:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Player |
||
Ulysses |
Waiting, watching the fires. |
0015ec95 |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
Still, maybe it's good you came along, if only so I can warn you. You're the first traveler I've seen. |
001631e9 |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
Road's been empty for some time now. No sign of life except the fire here, and the fires of Nipton. |
001631f8 |
This seems to have led into this:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Can't see the smoke in the distance? Let your eyes follow the break in the mountain South and West. Town, border of the bear. Something's on fire. |
0015ec89 |
Ulysses |
Not the buildings, would be a different kind of smoke. Looks like tires burning, or maybe people. |
0015ec89 |
Ulysses |
No matter which, not looking to get added to the pile. |
0015ec89 |
He will elaborate a bit more on the current trouble at the town if asked:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Last time I walked Nipton was years ago. Heard more on the road about it since from people living and dead. |
0015ec8e |
Ulysses |
If you've searched Nipton, let me know. If you're shedding tears - past the gangs, the mayor, and its hospitality, Mojave is better off without it. |
0015ec8e |
Ulysses |
As long as the people died quick it's better than dying slow under the bear's shadow. |
0015ec8e |
Here he says he will stay at his camp until he receives word from Nipton. Scouting Nipton was a prerequisite for recruiting Ulysses.
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Ran out of road as soon as I saw the fires. Figured I'd seen as much as I was likely to see and keep breathing. |
0015ec90 |
Ulysses |
I'm going to stay here until Nipton gives an answer, then I'll move on. Suggest you do the same. |
0015ec90 |
Scouting Mission#
After a conversation, Ulysses would offer the player advice for if they wanted to investigate further.
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Player |
||
Ulysses |
Nipton may have already answered with its silence. I've seen nothing from here. |
0015c52d |
Ulysses |
If you go, circle the town first, and watch for scavengers from the Mojave and the townspeople. |
0015c52d |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
Still, wouldn't be the first time my advice found deaf ears. |
0015ec8f |
Ulysses |
So, if you end up going, circle the town first. Even if nothing's wrong, Nipton isn't known for its hospitality. |
0015ec8f |
There is a version of this exchange also where Ulysses would advise the player not to go. This may have been part of an alternate dialogue branch, or dependent on the player's level:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Player |
||
Ulysses |
Couldn't ask you to do that. Wouldn't. |
001611e4 |
Ulysses |
If Nipton's burning, there's a reason. The bear couldn't keep it one way or the other. Don't want you suffering for its mistake. |
001611e4 |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
Haven't lived this long because of curiosity. I'll keep watch here. |
001611e5 |
Ulysses |
If you're looking to get closer, that's on you. Wouldn't ask you to go. Don't think you should. |
001611e5 |
Another version of the prompt:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
They may be gone, or fled. Towns are isolated along the border, no telling what could have happened. |
0015ecba |
Ulysses |
If you find cause for the attack, I would be interested to know. |
0015ecba |
News About Nipton#
Once the player had successfully scouted Nipton, they could report back to Ulysses with their findings.
Here he reacts to the player bringing him news that the Legion are responsible for what happened to Nipton:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Thought powder gangers might have been involved, Legion's a surprise. They usually put nails in problems, not set them on fire. |
0015ec8d |
Ulysses |
Suspected as much. That smoke isn't from home fires burning. That kind of smoke's either people or old world rubber. |
0015ec8d |
Ulysses |
From the smell I'm guessing it's people. Trace of gunpowder, too. |
0015ec8d |
Here he elaborates on what the attack at Nipton says about the NCR's future:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Guess the bear's got another cut in its hide, or a burn in its rug. |
0015ec87 |
Ulysses |
It's like the Legion putting cigarettes out on it, one at a time. Won't last long at this rate. |
0015ec87 |
Here is his reaction to being told Vulpes was responsible:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Vulpes? Bear's got cause for worry. |
00160c94 |
Ulysses |
If he's cutting across the border, they may not even realise they're bleeding until too late. |
00160c94 |
This is likely in response to the player asking about the Legion's relationship with the Powder Gangers:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Legion doesn't have much tolerance for tribes with explosives, even if Nipton did. |
0015ec88 |
Here he speculates on whether or not the people of Nipton fought back before they died:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
By my count, people prove themselves deserving. Other times, people prove how weak they are together. Further West I get the more I see it. |
0015ec92 |
Ulysses |
So, if they died brave, so be it. If they died scared and on their knees, that's theirs to carry, and not for long. |
0015ec92 |
Ulysses |
If you knew people in Nipton you can speak to it more than I can. All I can do now is say what happened. It's in history's hands. |
0015ec92 |
Some more dialogue for this sequence:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Nipton was all for fighting when they were on your blind side, or if it meant shaving a few caps off you in fair trade. |
0015ec97 |
Ulysses |
I know how big Legion's scouting parties can get. They will send one, then a few. It's never an army though, and not more than a town's headcount. |
0015ec97 |
Ulysses |
Nipton had more numbers than that. Yet they all died. |
0015ec97 |
Here he muses on what he plans to do next now that he has an update on Nipton:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Player |
||
Ulysses |
Interesting. There's a poor answer. Throwing questions back at you. |
0015ec9d |
Ulysses |
Was waiting until Nipton gave some sign of life. If Nipton's gone ghost, no sense sitting here waiting for any kind of answer. |
0015ec9d |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
Not sure yet. If Legion hit Nipton, means going East or West doesn't matter much. I'll have to think on it. |
0015ec91 |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
You braved Nipton. I'm willing to brave the Mojave with you. |
0015ec9e |
Player |
<Alt.> |
|
Ulysses |
Still, you've already got a shadow. You don't need any more company. If you find yourself alone again, circle back around, I'll be here. |
0015ec9f |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
The fires of Nipton burn, and that should settle it. |
00160c93 |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
Not by choice. Nowhere else to go. Was heading to Nipton. Not anymore. |
001611e7 |
The player could also show Ulysses Mayor Steyn's journal had they acquired it:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
So you see the snakes that curl in the bear's shadow. Something about that mayor seemed like one who'd hoard food while others starved. |
00160c84 |
Ulysses |
Impressed you found evidence when the bear couldn't - even when it smelt the rot. |
00160c84 |
Main Quest#
They Went That-a Way#
Ulysses could also be asked about Benny:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Player |
||
Ulysses |
Name's not familiar, why do you ask? |
0015ef80 |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
Scars tell this story. There was a lot of care in whoever took the knife to your face after, but they left tracks too. |
0015ef84 |
Ulysses |
Must have been slow work piecing you back together. Yet they took the time to do it right. Can't see it along the forehead. Shrapnel cuts barely show. |
0015ef84 |
Ulysses |
When you find this Benny of yours, that's going to be slow work too. |
0015ef84 |
Some more dialogue from this exchange:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Player |
||
Ulysses |
Wouldn't want to be him. Your voice took on a lot of weight just now. He the one that shot you twice in the head? |
0015ef7f |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
Sounds like he made a mistake in intent, or his aim. He shoot you twice in the head. |
0015ef7c |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
Wherever he is, I don't pity him. If you're going to shoot someone it's not a job you leave half finished. |
0015ef7d |
Render Unto Caesar#
During the quest Render Unto Caesar, Ulysses would comment on the player's invitation and offer them advice prior to the meeting with Caesar. This is a line where he expresses surprise at a female having been offered an invitation:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
A woman called before Caesar. An invitation to the Fort. |
0015c2e3 |
If the player was previously aligned with the NCR but expressed interest in serving the Legion instead, Ulysses would have this advice to offer:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Trading one old world flag for another. Don't know if going to the Fort will be far enough. Your history with the bear behind. |
0015c2e4 |
Ulysses |
Caesar respects strength. If you speak to him, stand your ground. Try and run and he'll cut your tendons before you take a step. |
0015c2e4 |
Ulysses |
If he's summoned you, I wouldn't delay. Caesar doesn't invite people to speak with him. Take it as an order, not a request. |
0015c2e4 |
If the Courier was neutral or planning on joining the Legion, Ulysses would offer similar advice:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Trading one old world flag for another. You'll have to travel far to leave your service to the bear behind. |
0015c2ec |
Ulysses |
Caesar respects strength. If you serve him, stand your ground. Run - he'll cut your tendons before you take a step. |
0015c2ec |
Ulysses |
It's rare, an invite like that. Caesar doesn't speak to others by invitation, only by his command. |
0015c2ec |
Oh My Papa#
Ulysses has dialogue pertaining to this quest as well. He offers the player a general overview of the situation, and the parallels between the Khan's assimilation and the destruction of his own tribe.
These lines would likely be used after Ulysses' reveal that he was actually a Legion scout:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
He's done the Legion's work already. Hate for the bear runs deep here, especially after the blood at Bitter Springs. |
0015feee |
Ulysses |
It's a good sign. An alliance with the Khans only helps the Legion at Hoover Dam. |
0015feee |
These lines seem to be intended for if Ulysses had been convinced to back a faction other than the Legion. They could also have been intended for before the reveal, where Ulysses was posing as a traveler.
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
The Legion's playing with this tribe. And they'll crush them when they've made use of them just like they did with other tribes in the East. |
0015fefc |
Ulysses |
We need to stop him. An alliance with the Khans would give the Legion too much strength in the coming battle. |
0015fefc |
Ulysses |
Also, allying with the Legion means the end of these people. If you can convince them of that, they break from him. |
0015fefc |
This line is likely in response to the player asking Ulysses to offer his account to Papa Khan:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
My words aren't enough. I'm a stranger here. There are records, that history penned in Legion hand may prove stronger. |
0015ff02 |
Ulysses would advise the player on where they might obtain the evidence they are looking for:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
At the Fort there is proof. Histories, ledgers, that show the Legion's march for what it is, the death of tribes one after the other. |
0015ff03 |
Ulysses |
It may help, it may not. Still, it's something. Choice is yours. |
0015ff03 |
Here Ulysses takes a neutral stance on the situation, possibly for when he is still maintaining the guise of a traveler:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
I think we should leave it alone, but I wanted to warn you. Taking the long view. Crossing Karl could bring trouble down the road. |
001600d9 |
Another, somewhat neutral line that may have played before the reveal:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
A similar thing happened with my tribe. Although my word won't carry much weight here, evidence from the Legion might sway them. |
0015feec |
This line is related to the Khans in some way, but is difficult to place:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
He doesn't have much to fear here, no surprise. And in dealing with the Khans there is little to fear there as well. |
001600d7 |
Et Tumor, Brute?#
Ulysses has some dialogue for this quest also. Here, he reacts to the player curing Caesar of his ailment:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
So Caesar will walk among the troops again. What you've done may well have changed the history of the West. |
00160c8a |
This also seems highly likely to be for this quest:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
He let another hold a knife to him. If he was weak enough to allow a knife so close to his neck, a quick death's often a merciful option. |
00160c82 |
Companion Quest#
Introduction#
This dialogue is related to Ulysses' companion quest. Judging by the indifferent stance towards Caesar's Legion, it would've played either during the initial encounter or at any time prior to his reveal. The dialogue here suggests Ulysses' dilemma faced throughout his story was that he could not place his faith in either side:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
You've walked the Mojave enough to know what kind of place that is. I've walked East of the Colorado, I know what it's like. |
0015f429 |
Ulysses |
One day this fighting's going to be done. That could be good or could be bad, depends on who's holding the flag at the end. |
0015f429 |
Ulysses |
The day I set my flag down it will be over my body, or over a nation I believe in. I'll keep it from walking history's road twice. |
0015f429 |
This seems to be for if asked about the NCR and Legion around the time the player would scout Nipton:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |

Ulysses |
Bull and the Bear. Legion and NCR. Both follow flags with symbols that go back hundreds of years. More, even. |
001631ff |
Ulysses |
Bull goes back to times even I'm not sure about. Numbers so low in the calendar I don't know if you'd believe me if I told you. |
001631ff |
Ulysses |
Bear's history is more recent, but it's same as the bull. It's a flag people died following. Had one head back then, but end was still the same. |
001631ff |
Here he adopts a neutral stance on the conflict, likely intended for the first encounter at Wolfhorn Ranch:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Let the bear and bull fight it out over the Colorado. Settle what should have been settled long ago. |
001617ec |
Ulysses |
Traveler's easiest. Those with a meaner streak call me a tribal or refugee. Historian fits me better. |
001617ec |
A bit more, seemingly from this exchange:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Not looking to join them, either. So if you're bent following the bear's flag, or the bull, that's not my road. |
001617f6 |
Ulysses |
Mojave's getting tense. Can feel it in the ground. Troops marching. Lot of eyes on Hoover Dam. Guns and blades, too. |
001617f6 |
These lines fit the theme of this conversation, and may have been intended for use here also:

Thoughts On The Conflict#
It is not known at what point during his quest this dialogue would play. Here he elaborates on his fears for the land after the war's conclusion:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
The two-headed bear wins, its sickness continues, its two heads snapping at each other. All you see in the Mojave, that rot will grow. |
0015fa99 |
Ulysses |
The bull wins, the Legion makes an East of the West. Then it's got nothing left to fight. |
0015fa99 |
Ulysses |
Both of them. End of the world. Both endings they're going to die slow. Us along with it. |
0015fa99 |
In this dialogue sequence Ulysses elaborates on the war between the factions and it's parallels with historical events:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
No, it's history coming back. It's what they get following those old world symbols on their flags down the same road history once walked. |
0015fa9c |
Ulysses |
And over Hoover Dam too. There's an irony, nice and sharp. Two spirits of the old world, fighting over the last piece of history. |
0015fa9c |
This seems to be for around when he tells the player about reporting back to Caesar regarding Hoover Dam. He again brings up the importance of conviction, something the player would need to demonstrate in order to successfully complete his quest:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
As I see it, the bear and the bull need a lot of killing to see what their ideas are really about. People are going to suffer, slow or quick, |
001631c4 |
Ulysses |
History tells me the slow death at the hands of an idea usually ends up being a quick death once the bombs hit. |
001631c4 |
Ulysses |
If you aren't willing to die for an idea, it's not much of an idea. |
001631c4 |
Thoughts On The Factions#
Caesar's Legion
Neutral/Doubtful
Ulysses has two different opinions on the Legion evident in his dialogue. In some responses, he seems either indifferent or doubtful of the Legion. These may have been intended to play for the early game, where Ulysses is still posing as a traveler.
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
They followed the flag of the bull, an old world symbol just like the Republic. Brought the East to heel, and now they've found the West. |
0015faa7 |
Ulysses |
They're looking to make that theirs, too. To them, the two-headed bear is just another tribe. |
0015faa7 |
Ulysses |
When the bear and bull clash at Hoover Dam, it's the end of the world. And neither one realises it. |
0015faa7 |
Though a Legion scout, it seems he would have had some doubts about the Legion's future after the battle of Hoover Dam:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Still a choice. There's many serving the bear who choose to do nothing, sometimes with great energy. |
0015c19e |
Ulysses |
Breaking away just makes another side. And in time no matter where you stand, all the West will be under the bear, or the Legion. |
0015c19e |
Ulysses |
Legion's different. They're focused. Sharp like a knife. They just don't see beyond the next cut, and the slow bleed after. |
0015c19e |
Some more dialogue where Ulysses elaborates on this:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
The Legion's old world. Yet its flag, its whole reason for marching, is when there's something to fight. |
0015c19f |
Ulysses |
The bear falls when the last NCR trooper is nailed on Caesar's crosses, that's when the Legion is going to be tested. |
0015c19f |
More doubts regarding the Legion:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Their flag is an old world one. Just don't think they've thought it through. The people followed that flag died once. |
0015fa9a |
Ulysses |
If they make the West the same as the East, no more tribes to fight, then what? Not sure what's going to come after that. |
0015fa9a |
More dialogue where he alludes to a Legion victory not being what they think.
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
That's the view of most, when all the history they see is Hoover Dam. History keeps going after that, one battle won't end it. |
00161850 |
Ulysses |
Don't think the Legion knows what marching West means, any more than the bear knew what coming East meant. |
00161850 |
Here he mentions something needing to “break”, though it’s unsure if he’s referring to the Legion or the conflict in general:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Caesar's stronger, faster. More troops, maybe? But they're experiencing an idea straight out of the old world facing you across the field. |
001631bc |
Ulysses |
It's like history repeating, like a looping holotape. Something's got to break it. Something. |
001631bc |
Pro Legion
At some point in the game Ulysses would begin to encourage the player to support the Legion. This seems to happen before the reveal that he is a Legion spy, as in some lines he talks about the Legion in a way that suggests that he is not part of the group.
Here he would suggest the player consider supporting the Legion:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
As I said, there are other roads. The Legion's one. |
0015c34b |
If asked about slavery in the Legion:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
There was slavery in the East long before Caesar showed up. And bear's proven you shouldn't claim an area as yours if you can't keep its people. |
001617da |
Some dialogue where he talks about the Legion:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Not by history's count. 86 tribes of the East once shared the land. Once thought that's the way it was. Then Caesar came, sixed them all. |
001617e0 |
Ulysses |
The Mojave was peaceful for a time. Or at least at peace with itself. Then the bear came lumbering out the West, left bloody tracks all over it. |
001617e0 |
Ulysses |
Even the old world flag - America - even that was born from land changing hands, breaking from the old. |
001617e0 |
This seems to be a continuation of that sequence:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
There's going to be more blood spilt in the Mojave before the sun falls on the Colorado. The dam's going to run red with it. |
001617e3 |
Ulysses |
If your actions tell me you're Colorado bound, we'll talk again. |
001617e3 |
New California Republic
Here he offers some thoughts on the NCR also, as well as why he does not support them:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
You've seen their flag, a bear with two heads. Symbol's an old world one. Had one head then, better off for it. |
0015faa8 |
Ulysses |
Their flag's their spirit. They're split like any two-headed animal trying to go in two different directions, ending up nowhere. |
0015faa8 |
Ulysses |
In the Mojave that will only get you sand between your fingers, or over your grave. |
0015faa8 |
Some more dialogue for his thoughts on the NCR:

0015faad |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
They've come far and fast. Out here that can leave you weak and dead. They're not settling the Mojave, they're bleeding across it. |
0015c114 |
Some thoughts on where he believes the NCR weakness lies:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Bear's too busy carving up the Mojave with knives - roads, borders and how things should be - to see how it is. |
0015faa5 |
Ulysses |
They're stretched thin, can't protect their frontlines, their towns. Think paper's power. Radio means control. And all it takes… |
0015faa5 |
Ulysses |
All it takes is a handful of men willing to kill to put Nipton to death. And Nipton was under the shadow of the bear. Not anymore. |
0015faa5 |
He explains more here, saying he believes the NCR is unintentionally making things worse:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Trying doesn't hold much weight with me. Legion doesn't try to kill people, they do it. The bear kill people trying to protect them. |
0015fa9b |
This seems to be in response to being asked about how he refers to the NCR:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
California Republic. Two-headed bear. East is the bull, Legion. Don't care much for names sometimes. Flag and the people usually tell you more. |
0015ec93 |
Ulysses |
Nipton was proof. Doesn't matter now. |
0015ec93 |
New Vegas
With Vegas being a third option for the player to ally with, Ulysses would comment on this choice also. He believes Mr. House is also repeating history, similar to the NCR and Caesar's Legion:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Player |
||
Ulysses |
That's the wrong word. Theatre - that's better. The families, the bear, are all on a stage. |
0015faae |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
House. He's the one watching. The why? You'd know better than I would. |
0015faaf |
Ulysses |
Maybe it's because he likes surrounding himself with things that run a certain way. Like those robots of his, the girls, and that one Vic. |
0015faaf |
Ulysses |
He can't let go, but he puts a smile on and takes a shovel to history's graves. Props up the dead, then puts words in their mouths. |
0015faaf |
Ulysses |
Not a world I want to be part of. Going through motions until we're all smiling faces on some robot screen. |
0015faaf |
There is another version of this dialogue present also. It seems this version would be used if the player had not met Mr. House yet:

0015fab0 |
Ulysses |

0015fab0 |
Ulysses |
Someone's got old world blues, and they've got it bad. They may not even still be alive, their robots just going through the motions. |
0015fab0 |
Another version of this dialogue, that seems more specific to House and mentions Benny also:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
My guess is old world blues. He can't let go. |
0015faa0 |
Ulysses |
But he puts a smile on it and takes a shovel to history's graves. Props up the dead, then puts words in their mouths. |
0015faa0 |
Ulysses |
Not a world I want to be part of, neither should you. Worried he's making you dance like Benny, and we know how that ends. |
0015faa0 |
Here he states he does not believe Vegas can stand against the Legion:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
19 tribes could not do it. All the lights in Vegas cannot. |
0015c56c |
Ulysses |
His strength lies in his title, and it is his weakness. He will not fight a losing battle and destroy what he represents. |
0015c56c |
Some more dialogue on the nature of New Vegas:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Vegas is old world, filled with old world ghosts. And ghosts need the living to do their work. |
0015fa9f |
Ulysses |
That's why the families are there, why the bear stumbles there to lose itself. It's a dance, I don't know its purpose. |
0015fa9f |
Some thoughts on the Three Families of Vegas:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Families of Vegas were once tribes. Got drunk under Vegas lights. The spirit bled out of them. Old World history, under a different flag. |
0015fa97 |
Ulysses |
Whatever traditions or rituals they had most likely squeezed out of them by now. Turned into something else. |
0015fa97 |
Ulysses |
And if not, then I'm afraid what's going to happen when they come creeping back. |
0015fa97 |
A few more thoughts on Vegas:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Vegas has old world power. It's more light than strength. Needs hands to guide it. |
001617ff |
A line for commenting on House specifically:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
You've spoken with the ghost of Vegas, something no one has done. He'd see you, if only to see where you stand. |
0015c358 |
Player Alignment#
Here Ulysses comments on the player's allegiance. Ulysses makes repeated mention here of how the player's words don't match their actions. This suggests that in order to win him over, the player would need to act in their factions best interests.
Caesar's Legion
Here Ulysses acknowledges that the player is actively working with the Legion:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Bull doesn’t turn. Moves straight and moves fast. Stay on the road you're on now, then you're charging ahead with the Legion. |
00161858 |
Here Ulysses chastises the player for claiming to be Legion but not backing it up with their actions:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
If that's your intention, your feet aren't listening. You're walking in the other direction, trailing fire and blood. |
0016186d |
Ulysses |
If you mean to march East, then you need to wake up and turn around. You don't, then your only destination is a cross. |
0016186d |
A more severe version, where Ulysses notes that the player's actions actively hurt the Legion:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Then you'd better start focusing ahead. What I hear and what I see don't match. |
0016186e |
Ulysses |
Right now, there's two heads on your shoulder. By the flag's count that means you're more bear than bull. |
0016186e |
Here he talks about the Legion potentially taking the player back:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
You've done a lot for the bear, lengthened its shadow. Caesar will forgive the offense. Just prove you're worth the forgiveness. |
0016320a |
This seems to be if the player claimed to be working for one faction, but was behaving in a way that served the Legion:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Your feet aren't hitting ground, like you're marching East right to the Legion. |
00161852 |
A similar line:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Sounds like you're charging ahead, just like the Legion, then. Bloodying your horns without looking left or right. |
00161854 |
New California Republic
Here he comments on how the player's actions serve the NCR:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Bear's walking with you, and it's leaving a trail |
00161851 |
Here he acknowledges the player is actively serving the NCR. It is not known yet however what it is that he claims the Courier made happen:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
You look like you've had better experience than most. You're among the few. |
0015c11b |
Ulysses |
But based on what I can tell, you made that happen. Wasn't NCR's doing. |
0015c11b |
Another line where he acknowledges the player having caused something to happen, though he may not be referring to a specific event, but a more general change:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
But based on what I can tell, you made that happen. It wasn't NCR's doing. |
0015c14e |
Another pair of lines for acknowledging the player has had experience with the NCR:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
NCR's left a mark on you. It's not hard to see. |
0015c11d |
Ulysses |
That's what its knives do to you, and why people in its shadow answer with knives of their own. |
0015c11d |
Ulysses acknowledges here the player hasn't had much interaction with the NCR:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
You may not have crossed paths with NCR as much as some. My view is hindsight. What they leave behind, the tracks and the fires. |
0015c11c |
Ulysses |
Look around the Mojave, see the bear's claw marks for yourselves. They're everywhere once you know to look for them. |
0015c11c |
Ulysses would also comment if the player had a mixed reputation with them:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
You look like you've had split deals with NCR. Good luck with that. |
0015c11e |
Ulysses |
Split intentions are a language they understand. Division bleeds from the two-headed bear on their flag into their people, and it is their weakness. |
0015c11e |
This is for Ulysses acknowledging that the player is behaving in a way that actively harms the NCR:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Still, your actions in the Mojave haven't served the bear, may even have quickened its end. There's mercy in killing a sick animal. |
0015c406 |
Here he reacts to the Courier telling him that they intend on serving the NCR, responding that there's no way they'd take them back. This may have played if "Don't Tread On The Bear" was failed:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
If that's your intention, your hands aren't listening. What you say and what you've done. Two don't meet in the middle. |
0015c152 |
Ulysses |
If your head doesn't know where it's going, your hands do. Too much NCR hell on them to make the bear take you back. |
0015c152 |
Some more lines for Ulysses to acknowledge is actively serving the NCR through their actions:

00161871 |
Vegas
Some dialogue where Ulysses tells the player their actions serve the NCR, not the faction they claim to serve. He has a similar response for a Legion scenario, whereas this one does not specify a faction, it may have been intended for the Mr. House or independent routes:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Then you better start backing it. What I hear and what I see don't match. |
0015c153 |
Ulysses |
Right now there's two heads on your shoulder, and that means you and the bear are sharing a grave. |
0015c153 |
Here he acknowledges the player is actively serving Vegas through their actions:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
On the road you're on now, that road leads back to the lights of Vegas and all its ghosts. |
00161856 |

Independent
This seems to be for a scenario where the Courier claimed to be working towards independence, but had served the NCR with their actions:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
History will see those two roads as one. You can say you're acting on your own, but the bear gains from it. |
0015c347 |
A similar line:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
And where does the bear's shadow end, and yours begin? |
0015c14f |
Here Ulysses may be acknowledging the player is working towards their own ends:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
I'm sharing wisdom, not blood. I'm not blind, I can see you're carving your own road. Just want to make sure it's not to a second grave. |
00163207 |
Neutral
Some comments on the player's alignment that don't mention any one faction in particular. The first is a warning for if the Courier considered switching sides:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
You say that, history will tell it different. Try to break away, that's still a side. |
0015c11a |
Here Ulysses makes it known that he does not support the player's current choices:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Politics of dead men will become history soon enough. You're making tracks enough for trouble to follow. |
0015c14c |
Here he reminds the player that there are other options available to them as well:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
If you're bound for Hoover Dam, there are other roads. |
00161870 |
A reminder that the player's words must match their actions:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
History won't care. It's the tracks you leave behind that it's going to follow. |
0015c14d |
Another reminder:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Still, anything you do now will leave more of a mark than any words we trade. What lies ahead, we'll see. |
0015c155 |
An acknowledgement that the player is actively supporting their choice of faction. Some words here are difficult to hear:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Sounds like you believe it. Or if you're [CHECK] At least you know the flag you're standing under. |
00161855 |
Early Game - Case For The Legion#
At some point before the reveal Ulysses would comment on the player's choice of faction. Here he suggests the player may be better off supporting Caesar's Legion in the upcoming war. This would happen sometime after leaving Nipton with him but before the reveal.
This seems to be the prompt that would start the conversation. There is a version that mentions the NCR, and another that is neutral:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Road to Hoover Dam grows shorter by the day. The bear won't survive what comes. |
0015c2f1 |
Ulysses |
The road to Hoover Dam grows shorter every day. After that your choice won't matter. What side of the Colorado you're on won't matter either. |
0015c2e1 |
It seems this prompt was intended for if an NCR aligned player pressed Ulysses on this:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
It's clear in your actions, whether you meant it or not, the bear is riding your shoulders. At least one of its heads. |
0015c2ed |
Ulysses |
Chances are, both the bear and the bull will want to meet you. See which flag you're behind, or if it's none at all. |
0015c2ed |
If asked if he was talking about supporting the Legion, Ulysees has two responses. It seems this was dependent on whether the player had actually visited Vegas or not:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Player |
||
Ulysses |
Never said a word about the Legion. Just not one for sitting in NCR's shadow. Different sides of the coin. |
0015c1a0 |
Ulysses |
Legion's got an old world spirit riding it, except its flag's got one head, and knows what direction it's going in. |
0015c1a0 |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
The Legion might listen to you, especially one who knows the Vegas streets like you do. |
0015c2f0 |
Ulysses |
If you're going to Hoover Dam, I'd make the camp on the East side of the river. Backing the bear is just going to earn you a grave by its side. |
0015c2f0 |
This seems to be in response to the player asking about supporting the NCR:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Speak to any head of the bear, see what happens. They'll keep talking as the Legion burns the West. |
0015c2e7 |
The player could also ask about considering Vegas as a possible third option:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Vegas? The Legion will put Vegas to the torch and the families to the blade. They're not as easily blinded as the bear. |
0015c1a4 |
Ulysses |
Vegas is old world power, but it's filled with ghosts. Ghosts need the living to do their work. Without that, they will fall. |
0015c1a4 |
He would have a bit more to say about the Legion also, showing that while he believes they are the stronger side, he still has some reservations about it's future:

If the player continued to defend the NCR, he would have said this:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Player |
||
Ulysses |
One woman can't keep Legion knives from the bear's throat. |
0015c2f2 |
Ulysses |
One man can't keep Legion knives from the bear's throat. |
0015c2f3 |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
The more you hold up its flag, the longer the struggle. But the end's going to be the same. The bear should have died long ago. Let it. |
0015c2f4 |
This seems to be for if the player claimed to support the NCR, but hadn't backed it up through their actions:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Player |
||
Ulysses |
You may have come from the West, but you aren't holding the bear's flag. |
0015c2e8 |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
You may be from the West, but don't see much loyalty to the bear in what you've done so far. |
0015c2ee |
If the player claimed to support another faction but hadn't backed it up:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Not sure you believe your own words, if your actions are any proof. |
0015c2ef |
But if the player had backed it up, he would say this:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Then it's good your actions have already spoken for you. |
0015c2e2 |
Mid Game - Reveal#
At some point during the player's travels with Ulysses, he would reveal that he was actually a Legion scout, posing as a traveler. This would open up new dialogue branches with Ulysses, where he could elaborate on the beginning of the conflict between the NCR and Legion, as well as his own backstory.
Confession
Here Ulysses would begin the conversation with the player. It is likely this would be triggered by reaching a certain point in the story, similar to Arcade's quest.
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
We've traveled together for some time. I hoped the road would take us more West than East, but hopes and roads don't always meet in the middle. |
001602d7 |
Ulysses |
I've never lied to you. I've not told you everything, though. And now's the time. |
001602d7 |
Here he confides in the player that he is a Legion scout:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
I wear the old world on my back, but the bull's shadow with me. I'm a scout for the Legion. Have been for many, many years. |
001602dc |
Ulysses |
Not long after the Legion took my tribe, that became my place. I walked the West as Caesar's eyes. |
001602dc |
Ulysses |
Until the day I came across Hoover Dam, and the flag of the bear flying over it. |
001602dc |
Ulysses |
And without realising what that meant, I brought word of it to Caesar. The Legion had been so focused on the East, they never looked to the sunset. |
001602dc |
If asked why he was telling this to the player:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
I'm telling you because the road you walk is growing shorter, and Lanius is at the end waiting. |
001602e2 |
Ulysses |
He'll kill you, and all you stand for on Hoover Dam, unless you are Legion. |
001602e2 |
If asked if he was spying for the Legion:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Spy? I watch. Scout's the calling. Eye of Caesar, all that. |
001631bb |
It seems the player could just part ways with him also:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
I prefer we part in peace. I respect your path, even if I don't believe it. |
001602e3 |
It seems this dialogue would be prompted by the player asking if he was truly aligned with the Legion.
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Yes, won't lie. If that troubles you, we can end this. I'm more watching than reporting nowadays. Been years since I passed along a report. |
0016333b |
Ulysses |
I believe in the bull's victory at Hoover Dam, even if I don't believe it will last after that. |
0016333b |
Generic question line, seemingly for this sequence:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
If it's only a few I'd be surprised. Ask. |
00161f63 |
Post Tribal Life
Here Ulysses talks about life in the Legion compared to tribal life:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Weeks went by. They hired us on as scouts. During this time, asked how we stored history, its importance. |
001631c5 |
Ulysses |
We brought a lot of misery to other tribes while helping Vulpes. Broke them all, one by one. Thought our flag was riding high. |
001631c5 |
Ulysses |
During that whole time I got to see how the Legion worked. Got to see the history of it, short and brutal. |
001631c5 |
More dialogue about life in the Legion:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
After the bull comes you learn, and you learn quick. You get your perspective. Weapons training, marching, getting ready for war. |
001631c0 |
Ulysses |
Run you through that, soon enough you'll start surrounding tribal camps, too. You end up on the other side. |
001631c0 |
Ulysses |
You'll hold the machetes as they break idols, rocks, putting rite and passage to the flame's way. |
001631c0 |
Ulysses |
And being on the other end, you see what you used to be. It can make you sick. Sometimes they fight, or beg, or offer tribute to spare them. |
001631c0 |
When asked how long he had been serving the Legion:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Long enough, either you're side by side with the soldiers, or you're out finding them a place to march. |
001385bd |
Ulysses |
I was in the latter position, which isn't a bad place to be if you like walking and seeing the land before it gets slashed and burned. |
001385bd |
Ulysses |
I've got a permanent place being one of Caesar's eyes though. Not sure if it's a reward or not. |
001385bd |
Here Ulysses talks about how the Legion will first destroy symbols that are sacred to a tribe:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Tribe worships anything living, they kill it, or eat it in front of you. |
001631b1 |
Ulysses |
Worship a rock shaped like man or beast, they'll make you break it with hammers until it's gravel. |
001631b1 |
Ulysses |
All those tribes we broke, they became markers along I-40. So did we in the end. We were making our own history. Before us lining an old world road. |
001631b1 |
Some more dialogue about the feeling of purpose that comes with being a Legionary:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
It's like you're tied to something bigger. Like you've got the giants of the old world walking behind you, and all you have to do is speak softly. |
001631b2 |
Ulysses |
And when you speak, the flag's right behind you, with the weight of Caesar. And all his troops ready to fall on your command. |
001631b2 |
Ulysses |
Your mind's not in the tribal camp anymore, it's surrounding it like it was meant to be. |
001631b2 |
Assimilating The Tribes
He provides some background on the Hang Dog tribe here:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Hell, you know the Hang Dogs were willing to give up their hounds? Their dogs, they were like religion. Like their children, more. |
001631b3 |
Ulysses |
As if Caesar thought men and dogs were any different. As if a tribe's children were any different than dogs to train. |
001631b3 |
Ulysses |
And some tribes, they did offer up their kids. They were willing to give up their history, and their future, to buy a little more time in the now. |
001631b3 |
Ulysses |
What kind of people do that? What kind of history you have to have to give up everything for a memory that isn't ever going to leave? |
001631b3 |
More detail on how exactly the Legion erases a tribe's history:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
It's efficient, like prying a bullet out of a wound. Take the men, kids, start trading them. Take the women. Show them their place in Legion. Quick. |
001631b5 |
Ulysses |
Snap the family like a dried twig. Don't let the two halves see the other. Quick now, move too slow, start crying, fall behind, Mojave will feast on you. |
001631b5 |
Ulysses |
Then they burn the past so there's nothing to go back to. |
001631b5 |
The player seems to ask Ulysses if he regrets something here, though it's not clear what it is that's being asked about.
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Regret it? Regret all the years of my life wasted thinking that circle of tribes was the world. Their history going nowhere. |
001631c9 |
Ulysses |
The Legion levelled all that out, and their history went straight back like a vein into the old world. |
001631c9 |
Ulysses |
It gave them more strength than I'd ever thought possible. Gave me more strength to tap into it. Serve beneath that flag. |
001631c9 |
Becoming A Scout
In this dialogue Ulysses explains how exactly he was chosen to be a scout in the Legion:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
My commanders knew that I could fend for myself. Could play tribal or merchant when I wanted. And I remembered things. |
001631bd |
Ulysses |
Then Vulpes sent for me. Our Lord of arranging miracles for Caesar in other's tears. Quick talk. Turned me to a new way of thinking. |
001631bd |
Ulysses |
He spoke some old world latin at me and asked me to repeat back what I heard, which I did word for word. |
001631bd |
Vulpes then accepted Ulysses as Legion scout:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
He said being a tribal, that having that history was going to be a strength where I was going. |
001631c2 |
Ulysses |
Yes, he was testing me. Testing my memory. Looking for a way to make use of my instincts, my skills, and my history. |
001631c2 |
Ulysses |
I didn't question. Vulpes and questions, waste of time. |
001631c2 |
From here, he would describe his mission:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
His answer tells you only what he wants, no more. He's congress like that. |
001631ca |
Ulysses |
Told me I was going West, find more territory, slaves. Render unto Caesar. Probably nothing out there, Caesar had conquered most everything else. |
001631ca |
Ulysses |
But best to be sure. That's what I do. |
001631ca |
More information on his role:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
When Vulpes and Caesar sent me West, it was clear I was to act tribal, not Legion. Blend in, not suddenly attack anyone who attacked the Legion. |
00161f64 |
Ulysses |
I was to watch, and as much as it stings and hurts to watch my brothers suffer, it was better than revealing myself and breaking my vow. |
00161f64 |
It seems there was a follow up here, that possibly changed based on the player's Legion affinity:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Player |
||
Ulysses |
Not sure it matters now. It won't matter to history. But you made me question the Legion and I think that's the bigger vow I've broken. |
00161f65 |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
If you're with the Legion, then we're family as well. |
00161f66 |
More dialogue on being a scout:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Got trained as much as possible. Couldn't kill the wandering inside me though, or the fact I don't miss much. |
001631b4 |
Ulysses |
Me? I'm no soldier. I love walking too much to be standing in line. |
001631b4 |
Ulysses |
They tried to break me of that habit by keeping me at the front. Farther and farther until scout was what I was. |
001631b4 |
Finding Hoover Dam
Here Ulysses describes the events that led up to informing Caesar about the Dam:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
At that moment, everything changed. And I didn't see it in time. What it meant to tell Caesar what I'd found. |
001631bf |
Ulysses |
Vulpes made me tell him so he could study Caesar's face when I told him. Gauge his reaction and be sure he was on the right side of any anger. |
001631bf |
Caesar's reaction to hearing of Hoover Dam:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
I got to see the fire in his eyes when I told him about the size of the thing. The generators, the lights burning at night. That gate to the West. |
001631c6 |
Ulysses |
I told him how wondrous it was. All he could hear was war drums. I came so close to dying for describing something that seemed greater than him. |
001631c6 |
Ulysses |
He couldn't abide not having it. The fact there was another flag on it just drove him more. |
001631c6 |
Ulysses |
The two aren't going to survive each other. That's the end of the world. |
001631c6 |
Ulysses |
They're going to fight, and one of them's going to absorb the other. But they aren't going to kill what drives them. |
001631c6 |
Ulysses |
They clash, and from all that blood something else is going to get born. |
001631c6 |
This dialogue branch seems to be in response to the player asking him if he regrets revealing the existence of Hoover Dam to Caesar:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
I don't. Needed to happen. Only good can come of it, learned a lot. |
001631be |
Ulysses |
Caesar? Never really been tested. Republic needs to be tested. |
001631be |
Ulysses |
The two of them need to figure out something new, because the world's not big enough for the two of them. |
001631be |
Ulysses elaborates here on the implications of finding the Dam and its consequences for the wasteland:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Conquering tribes is what Caesar knows, and he knows it too well. |
001631cc |
Ulysses |
It's history he keeps repeating, and the words have dulled to his ears when accomplishments are accounted. |
001631cc |
Ulysses |
Now to face something that has a flag, an idea, and a philosophy as big as his. A bear to match his bull. |
001631cc |
Some more dialogue relating to this:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
And what my eyes saw the day I saw the dam, sun hitting it just right. Caesar's world had gotten bigger and smaller at the same time. |
001631cd |
Ulysses |
Was blinded by the sight of it, didn't see it for what it was. It's not just a piece of the old world, it was the end of the world. |
001631cd |
Here the player could ask if he was lying about something:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Watching. I didn't lie. And I didn't know the Legion had moved so far West. |
00161f59 |
Ulysses |
Sometimes Caesar's eyes are left to watch for a long time before someone asks what they see. And you better hope you've seen something good. |
00161f59 |
Ulysses |
Finding Hoover Dam probably bought me a few years, though it depends how that plays out. |
00161f59 |
Some dialogue that mentions Lanius:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
It was in his eyes and he wasn't letting it go. |
001602d9 |
Ulysses |
He's raized up all the East. A force history hasn't seen in a hundred years, all the tribes he's conquered. |
001602d9 |
Ulysses |
And Legate Lanius, the monster of the East, is leading them. He's coming here. And when he does, end of the world's coming with him. |
001602d9 |
Here Ulysses remarks that the battle will be a good test for the Legion. It may have been intended for this sequence.
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Caesar, the legates, Vulpes. If they weren't challenged they'd grow soft and die. Their belief, not just words. |
00161f61 |
Ulysses |
Whether it's the bear, you, or Vegas, it doesn't matter. They need to be tested. If you're that test, then that serves. |
00161f61 |
Here he says he believes conflict was inevitable regardless of whether he'd found the Dam or not:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
No, he would have found the bear without me. Or some other Caesar would've. |
001631c3 |
Ulysses |
It's just that when he was snaring up tribals, their ideas were big enough to take root. |
001631c3 |
Ulysses |
Now this two-headed bear, this idea of how people should live is almost as big as he is, and it's just as hungry as you'd expect. |
001631c3 |
A line about making history:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
It's a small thing to make history, I found. You must know it, too. Or something tells me you will. |
001631cb |
Legion Vs NCR
Here he talks more about the conflict:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
I knew he'd want it. I knew he'd want to know more. I just didn't know how bad, or how big his enemy was. |
001631b6 |
Ulysses |
Felt like a tribal again when you see troops with the bear's mark marching toward you, that maybe being Legion isn't enough. |
001631b6 |
Ulysses |
Guns, flying vertibirds, rockets, missiles, that shit's like old world god raining down on you. |
001631b6 |
More dialogue on the conflict:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Caesar was hungry. Don't keep an army moving? It'll feed on itself. |
001631b7 |
Ulysses |
Me? I think Vulpes knew Caesar's history. He knew what'd happen if Caesar stopped moving and there was nothing to sink his blade into. |
001631b7 |
Ulysses |
Lucky for no one, I found the old world wall, and a chapter of history's going to be written there. Might be the last chapter. |
001631b7 |
Even more dialogue on the conflict:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Two ideas have to fight, see which one is stronger. It's what he always wanted. Going to make a lot of misery before the sun sets on the year. |
001631b8 |
Ulysses |
You want to know why he marches? Why there's war? Why people are dying? It's because I told him without thinking about the consequences. |
001631b8 |
Here he reflects on the reasons the war started in the first place:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
I hadn't found a piece of old world history. I'd made history. Found a New California Republic, something as big as Caesar. |
001631b9 |
Ulysses |
Saw the flag of the bear flying over Hoover Dam. It was another flag, one I'd never seen before. |
001631b9 |
Ulysses |
I should have known what it would mean, bringing news of that flag back. Want to know why there's war? It's because men are sent looking for it. |
001631b9 |
Closing Words
Though speculation, this dialogue seems to be a conclusion to Ulysses' reveal. He would urge the player to part ways with either Vegas or the NCR, telling them they had no chance against the Legion:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
We're reaching a crossroads. And what's going to happen at Hoover Dam, there's no turning from it. |
001602d2 |
Ulysses |
There never was. As soon as Caesar heard of a tribe as large as the Republic he saw something no Eastern tribe could offer - a challenge. |
001602d2 |
Ulysses |
And that slice of the old world - the Dam. He wanted it more than anything. It was in his eyes, and he wasn't letting it go. |
001602d2 |
This seems to continue on from here:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Turn away from this road you're on. Either support the Legion or don't, but leave the bear and Vegas to their deaths. |
001602df |
Ulysses |
The bear has been dying for years. Vegas, it's lights with no substance. |
001602df |
Ulysses |
Both can offer the Mojave nothing. Its people, nothing. |
001602df |
This dialogue also seems to be a part of this sequence, though not confirmed. Here he reiterates that he will need to see proof in the player's actions if he is to reconsider his standing:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Words won't be enough. |
001602d6 |
Ulysses |
I'd need to see it in your actions. As the time approaches, we'll talk more then. |
001602d6 |
Ulysses |
Keep your eyes on the East and in the coming days I'll ask again. Turn away from the West, it cannot last. |
001602d6 |
Late Game - Conclusion#
Eventually, Ulysses would have a conversation with the player about the side they will be supporting at the battle of Hoover Dam. There doesn't seem to be a version of this conversation that begins with Ulysses confident about the player's choice of faction, but there do seem to be lines present for a sequence where the player wins Ulysses round. This suggests that it either wasn't implemented yet, or it was a similar situation to Lonesome Road where Ulysses begins in a state of indecision and the player has to persuade him to join them.
Doubts
This dialogue may be an opening for this sequence:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
I've made my peace with watching history, not dying for it. If you're Colorado bound, you'll go alone. |
00163331 |
This dialogue is specific to the Legion path:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Player |
||
Ulysses |
The flag it follows is war, and it won't turn with no blood on its horns. It won't survive. It has no future. |
00163333 |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
But the bear still lives. Its back's against Hoover Dam and it's desperate. An old world symbol isn't easy to kill. |
00163317 |
This dialogue is specific to the NCR route:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Player |
||
Ulysses |
Do you think defeating the bull breathes life back into the bear's corpse? And should it? There's no future in its shadow. |
00163334 |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
But the Legion hasn't shown its full strength. When the Legate Lanius comes, all the East comes with him. |
00163316 |
Ulysses |
You can't defeat him. He is a myth to rival the old world. |
00163316 |
This dialogue is specific to the House ending:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Player |

Ulysses |
All the lights in Vegas can't withstand the Legion. Even if it did, there's no future in it. |
00163335 |
Player |

Ulysses |
But the bear still lives. And what it can't defeat in battle it will use tricks against it. And the Legion… |
00163318 |
Ulysses |
When then Legate Lanius comes, all the East comes with him. |
00163318 |
And this dialogue is for an independent ending:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Player |
||
Ulysses |
Vegas, whether for you or someone else, it's dead. It's an old world symbol that stands for nothing. |
00163332 |
Ulysses |
What you see in that place, it has blinded you, not me. That place has no future. Its lights and walls can't stand against the Legion. |
00163332 |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
But the bear still lives. And what it can't defeat in battle it will use tricks against it. And the Legion… |
00163318 |
Ulysses |
When the Legate Lanius comes, all the East comes with him. |
00163318 |
Persuasion
These lines seem to be part of a dialogue branch where the player would persuade Ulysses their choice of faction was the correct one. This section was either not fully implemented, or heavily reliant on player prompts, which makes it difficult to understand how this dialogue exchange might have unfolded.
Some generic lines for questioning Ulysses:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Player |
||
Ulysses |
What? What did you say? |
00163330 |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
What did you say to me? If you mean Hoover Dam, that- |
0016332e |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
That was different. It wasn't my intention to do that. It wasn't... this. What comes, it's more than any one person can change. |
0016330b |
If the player had not demonstrated sufficient loyalty to their faction through their actions, Ulysses would say the following:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Player |
||
Ulysses |
I've watched you. The future you promise has none of the bull's strength, the Legion's heart behind it. |
0016331e |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
I've watched you. Your course is without conviction, without understanding who you're leading to death. |
0016331f |
These two lines are repeated four times each in the files, suggesting they were corresponding negative/positive prompts for some sort of check with Ulysses:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Player |
||
Ulysses |
Yes. That is why I cannot follow you any longer. |
0016330a |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
Aye. Can't argue that. |
0016330d |
The first prompt is repeated three times, while the second is repeated only twice; making it difficult to determine if they were part of the same dialogue check or not:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Player |
||
Ulysses |
Then you'll carry that belief alone. |
0016332c |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
You truly believe you can make one nation of the West and the East? One that will last? |
0016332a |
This seems to be the final check to determine whether Ulysses will follow the player or not:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Player |
||
Ulysses |
It's not every day I get to see history made. I'll join you at Hoover Dam, whatever comes. |
00163319 |
Player |

Whatever history's made of this, it'll be an accident, just as it was when my eyes saw Hoover Dam. |
00163320 |
These lines also seem to be for the persuasion sequence, but it's not clear where they would fit:

Ulysses |
If I did, I'd be lying to both of us. |
00163315 |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
No. The history that comes, it's more than any one person can change. |
00163336 |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
That was different. It wasn't my intention to do that. It wasn't... this. What comes, it's more than any one person can change. |
0016330b |
Departure
These lines are for Ulysses departing from the player's company. It is not yet known under what circumstances these lines would play; whether it was a bad ending to his companion quest or a more general departure in response to misconduct by the player.
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Try and keep me here and you'll have to shed blood to make it happen. Let's leave with peace between us. |
0015c3c3 |
The player could opt to fight Ulysses rather than let him depart peacefully:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Then let's end this. |
0015c3c9 |
Ulysses would not simply return to the hill where he was first encountered, he would depart from the Mojave completely:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Not sure yet. The hill with two flags doesn't hold me. Think I was only waiting for you, just didn't know it then. |
0015c3c4 |
Ulysses |
If you return there you'll only see the Mojave and Nipton's grave. I'll have moved on. |
0015c3c4 |
This line is likely in response to the player asking if Ulysses would betray them.
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Only when it matters to history, not before. They'll hear no secrets from me, even if I hang on a Legion cross. |
0015c3c5 |
Ulysses would return any items given to him by the player:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Any gifts you've given, burdens I've shared, I 'll return. Don't need them and can do without the weight. |
0015c3cc |
More lines for his departure:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Player |
||
Ulysses |
Then we're now on two roads. I'll remember you, what you've done. Even if others forget. I owe it to history, and I owe it to you. |
0015c3cb |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
We'll not see each other again. The Mojave awaits. |
0015c3e0 |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
Follow the bear's flag, see what happens. As your muscles rot from their talk, only a Legion cross will support you in the end. |
0015c3e1 |
Success
This dialogue is for if the player had successfully convinced Ulysses that their faction was the right one to support:
This line is for a Legion ending:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
What I do - it's not for the bull. It's for you. It's future. |
0016331b |
This line is for an NCR ending:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
What I do - it's not for the bear, the Republic. It's for you. |
0016331a |
This line is for a House aligned Vegas ending:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
What I do - it's not for Vegas. It's for you. |
0016331c |
This line seems to be for an independent ending.
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Finally gave me some place to set my flag. And I'm tired of wandering when we've got a nation to make right here. |

Backstory#
Role#
Here Ulysses talks about how he sees himself as a historian now. It's not clear where this would've played, but he seems to be well acquainted with the player at this point:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Someone has to remember what happens. I don't forget much. |
001617fe |
Ulysses |
Used to think I was all for watching and listening. But after meeting you, looks like it depends on who is asking the questions. |
001617fe |
Ulysses |
Like to see things with my own eyes. Make the maps, not read them. So I walk, watch, listen. History's here now. Don't want to miss it. |
001617fe |
Another line related to watching history:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Player |
||
Ulysses |
I hope you do. Made my peace with watching history, not dying for it. Dam's drawn too many to it already. It's more an idea than a place. |
0016186f |
Old World Flag#
These dialogue responses seem to be prompted by the player asking about the flag on his jacket:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
The old world stretches farther back then we'll ever know. So much history was lost. |
0015c4c2 |
Ulysses |
There's a reason those societies died. And if the reason's lost, won't be long before it's found again. |
0015c4c2 |
Ulysses |
So when symbols out of history rise up and people gather round them again, all I see is the same road the old world walked, circling back on itself. |
0015c4c2 |
This would lead to Ulysses' providing more background on the conflict between the NCR and Legion:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Player |
||
Ulysses |
This? It's an old world symbol, a reminder. |
0015c4c4 |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
A reminder the old world's still around. Always at our backs, even here in the Mojave. |
0015c4c6 |
Ulysses |
Old world symbols still have power. The people worshipping them may fall. If the symbol isn't burned away though, spirits come back. |
0015c4c6 |
Ulysses |
The two-headed bear of the republic? It's a symbol of the old world, the Legion flag the same. Two spirits fighting over the Mojave's bones. |
0015c4c6 |
Here he elaborates on why he wears the Old World Flag instead of NCR or Legion colors:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Whether it's bull or bear, those colors aren't something you wear in the Mojave, especially West of the Colorado. |
0015c4c7 |
Ulysses |
Legion colors only scare people. And the Republic colors - even in the Republic - the NCR flag frightens them, or makes them filled with hate. |
0015c4c7 |
Ulysses |
No, if you want to travel in peace, choose something both sides can agree on, or ignore. Just make sure it's something you believe, like I do. |
0015c4c7 |
This dialogue seems to be for if the player wasn't really familiar with America:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Hmm, guess it doesn't. It's difficult to explain. But that isn't an answer. |
0015f419 |
Ulysses |
This flag was a nation that lies beneath our feet now. Buried, gone. They ruled all the Mojave and more. West, to the sea. East, to the sea. |
0015f419 |
Ulysses |
Maybe farther than that, if the books are to be believed. Yet that one tribe threw it away, didn't even know what they had. |
0015f419 |
But if the player was familiar with America, he would say this:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
You know it? Good. Not many people do, not in the Mojave anyway. America used to stretch all beneath us. Gone now. Except for the flag. |
0015c4d2 |
Ulysses |
Don't know if that's good or bad. America fought in a lot of wars, before the last one. Even a war against itself, if history's to be believed. |
0015c4d2 |
Ulysses |
Reminds me of NCR and Legion. Tearing at each other. East and West walking down that same road America once did. |
0015c4d2 |
Name#
Ulysses could be asked about his name also. There are multiple different versions of this, worth noting is that in the April build this is actually tied to an intelligence check, so the response seen may depend on the player's intelligence level.
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Player |
||
Ulysses |
It's not my given name. I took it from history, found it in a book. It's an old world name. |
0015c527 |
Ulysses |
Ulysses lived a long time ago, long before the old world set fire to itself. He made a mark without being myth. |
0015c527 |
Ulysses |
Had to fight during a time when his world had two flags and he had to make them one. |
0015c527 |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
Ulysses walked a hard road. He was a general like Caesar and Oliver. He was brahmin stubborn and it gave him strength on the battlefield. |
0015c52a |
Ulysses |
He led his side to victory - that's when he lost. When the fighting was done, the sickness took hold. |
0015c52a |
Ulysses |
The flag he'd kept, fought for, he turned on it. He tried to uphold what it meant, but it wasn't in him. |
0015c52a |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
He wasn't made for the flag he followed. He wasn't made for peace. That's the lesson. |
0015f428 |
Ulysses |
If you follow a symbol to the end, ask yourself what that means. More important, ask what happens after the end. |
0015f428 |
Ulysses |
Because history is going to keep going, and carry you and your symbol along with it, as sure as the old world on my back. |
0015f428 |
Combat#
The player could ask Ulysses about his skills in combat, as well as why he uses an Eagle Flag Pole specifically:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
A knife or a machete sends a signal when walking into a town. A walking staff's something people can brush off as harmless. |
001631f6 |
Ulysses |
And I admit it, preferred fighting with a flagpole. Liked the eagle on the end. Felt right to me. |
001631f6 |
Some dialogue covering his general uses in combat:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Don't like to fight if I can avoid it. If I can't, then I prefer settling things honestly, up close. Figure the enemy deserves the respect. |
0015ef78 |
Ulysses |
Good with a staff, but knives, spears, hatchets, all those things speak more to me than killing at a distance. |
0015ef78 |
Ulysses |
Fair with rifles and guns, but that's more the bear's calling than mine. Never want to rely on ammo if it came to a fight. |
0015ef78 |
Crafting#
Ulysses could also help the player craft items, as well teach them recipes:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
I survive. Don't need to carry much if you know the land. |
0015ef8e |
Ulysses |
Found ways of drawing life out of the desert that don't require a blaze. So if you require powders or venoms, tell me, we'll see what we can make. |
0015ef8e |
Lines for opening up the crafting menu:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
All right, let's see what you have. |
0015ef8f |
Ulysses |
Let's see what gifts the Mojave has given us. |
0015ef92 |
Ulysses |
Let's make some new from the old. |
Ulysses could teach the player how to make a Snakebite Tourniquet. In the Lonesome Road DLC in the final game, Ulysses reuses this dialogue, although in the final game he also adds "Tunneler bite can be just as bad." after the first line.
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Antivenom's helpful around the Mojave with the Bark Scorpions. Even one sting can kill you. |
00160c95 |
Ulysses |
My tribe, Twisted Hairs, had a better way. Snakebite Tourniquet - cuts off the venom, no need to scavenge glands and blood. Or drink that mess. |
00160c95 |
He would also teach them how make the item Bitter Drink. Like the ones for the Snakebite Tourniquet, these were reused for use in the DLC. The line "Land's full of gifts." is omitted, however:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Land's full of gifts. Mojave's got ways of healing most ills - if not, some tribe's usually found a way you didn't expect. |
00160c96 |
Ulysses |
Like Healing Powders. Tribes back West only use Xander and Broc flower. There's a way the Twin Mothers used to brew it, though. |
00160c96 |
Ulysses |
Called it Bitter Drink, mixed up the Xander and Broc in a bottle, added some kick to it so your head doesn't get all clouded. |
00160c96 |
Learning these seems to be dependent on the player's survival skill:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
None of any use right now. Get used to living off the land, might have some more for you later. |
00160c97 |
Twisted Hairs#
If asked, Ulysses would comment on his tribe as well, the Twisted Hairs. There are two versions of this backstory; one for before Ulysses reveals his identity as a Legion scout, and another for after.
Pre Reveal
This is the version for before the reveal, where Ulysses conceals his involvement with the Legion:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Once. Tribe's lost to history, so came West rather than march with the Legion. |
0015c56d |
Ulysses |
Other tribes - including mine - either fell to Caesar, went West like me, or died with "no" on their lips. |
0015c56d |
Ulysses |
The Twin Mothers, the Hang Dogs. Just names now along with the Twisted Hairs. I might be the last. One man's not a tribe. |
0015c56d |
Another line about the Twin Mothers that may have been part of this sequence:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
History cures a wound. Leaves the bitterness that caused it. The Twin Mothers were always about lessons. Caesar taught them the last one, though. |
00160c91 |
Here he provides more information on how the tribe was eliminated, as well as a false explanation for why he is in the Mojave:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
History happened. Caesar was stronger, more well organized. The tribes were just that, small, isolated, ignorant. |
0015c532 |
Ulysses |
The legion came. My tribe joined the 19. I traveled West to the Mojave. There is little else to tell. |
0015c532 |
Ulysses tells the player about his tribe's first contact with the Legion:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
History's short. At that point, I'll make it short too. It's history repeated over the East, anywhere Caesar's walked. |
001631b0 |
Ulysses |
Like I said, used to be one of the Twisted Hairs, East of the Colorado. |
001631b0 |
Ulysses |
Our first contact was with Vulpes the wolf. Treated us with respect. Asked to trade. Asked us for scouting information. Promised us gifts. |
001631b0 |
Additional background on how the Legion deals with local tribes:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Happened the same with almost every tribe. |
001631ce |
Ulysses |
Legion shows up one morning before the sun breaks. Surrounds the entire camp. Even rounds up the hunters out looking for game. |
001631ce |
Ulysses |
Then, they cut the tribe. Cut people, and their laws and beliefs, like tendons. Let them lie naked and exposed to die in the sun. |
001631ce |
These lines were likely in response to the player asking if he ever considered revenge against the Legion for what they did:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Crossed my mind, left as quickly as it came. I don't blame the legion, it's the way the world is. |
0015c560 |
Ulysses |
Mojave's no different. Predators come. If they're stronger, you fall, bend knee, or die. |
0015c560 |
This seems to be in response to the player asking why he hadn't joined the Legion with the rest of his tribe:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Never had the chance. Their choice, not mine. |
0015ec9a |
Here he talks about the name "Twisted Hairs":
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
We had the name Twisted Hairs in many languages of the East. It was how we kept history. Each braid counted a season, a year, a birth. Death. |
0015c564 |
Ulysses |
Knots marked events. Mantis swarms, the year the storms roared from the Divide. All our history hung in braids from our tents. |
0015c564 |
When asked about the history of his tribe, he would have the following to say:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Lost? That was history. Happening right in front of us like it always has. |
0015f420 |
Ulysses |
The history of the Twisted Hairs wasn't worth keeping. Nothing to learn from if you didn't see that day when it all burned up. |
0015f420 |
Ulysses |
It took some of them longer to see it. Some never did. |
0015f420 |
It seems he would use these lines if asked about certain topics pre reveal:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Don't really much want to talk about it. Think I've talked enough. Let's let the road speak for a while. |
001631c1 |
Ulysses |
Don't want to talk about it, too much history. Maybe another time. |
0016333c |
Post Reveal
After a certain trigger was hit, Ulysses would reveal that he did in fact join the Legion with the rest of his tribe. He would reveal some further details, and that the Legion adopted certain traditions from the Twisted Hairs when they assimilated them:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Part of it when the Legion took our tribe, they kept the code in the braids for some of their scouts. |
0015f421 |
Ulysses |
Allow them to pass information in the East without saying a word. Just who was passing on the road could tell volumes about what was ahead. |
0015f421 |
Ulysses |
Legion doesn't ruin a tribe, not completely. They take pieces from it. Like they did with the Hang Dogs, now our hound masters. |
0015f421 |
More dialogue on the significance of the braids:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Ritual, habit. If I die there is a chance someone will know my past from my corpse, unless I'm scalped. |
0015f422 |
Ulysses |
All our history hung in our camp. Rows and rows. All our rituals and past twisted up thick as ropes. |
0015f422 |
Ulysses |
The Legion burned those first when they took the tribe. Smell was terrible, like dogs or bighorners thrown on a campfire. |
0015f422 |
Ulysses |
Must have been what the Hang Dogs smelled when Caesar came for them and butchered their animals, until they surrendered. |
0015f422 |
More dialogue where he delves specifically into what the braids mean:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
To us. My tribe got herded up, scalped, shawn like big horners, then got to watch the braids burn in the campfire. Sounds stupid, doesn't it? |
001631ba |
Ulysses |
It wasn't then. It was like having years of your life going up in flames. Generations up in smoke. |
001631ba |
Ulysses |
We stored our history in our hair. How we twisted it, and knotted it. |
001631ba |
Ulysses |
Each bead: ten summers. Red bead: your first kill. A twin knot in the hair : when you first fucked a woman. Three knots: when she was with child. |
001631ba |
Yet more dialogue:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
I saw it as soon as I saw the Legion flag. Our history hung in our tents. Just moments, all knotted up. |
0015f426 |
Ulysses |
Caesar's history went to the horizon. The bull on that flag. It was all the East. Now it's coming West. If the bear doesn't know it yet, it will. |
0015f426 |
Here he describes how the Legion prioritized killing the tribe's elders, ensuring their traditions could not be restarted:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
The elders went on the fire next. In case they remembered what happened, tried to record it again. |
0015f427 |
Ulysses |
That's Legion. Traditions are put to the blade first. Break the alters, burn the history books. Whatever holds history, destroy it. |
0015f427 |
Caesar's Legion Commentary#
Caesar#
Here, Ulysses reacts to Caesar's death. It is not known yet how killing Caesar would affect Ulysses' companion quest. If killing Caesar did indeed fail the quest, then it is likely these lines were related to Et Tumor, Brute? specifically. They may also be for the cut path where the player would have Caesar killed by his own lieutenants. There are two versions of this:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Caesar would be history's hypocrite if he was angry about what happened. I'm not one for it either. |
00160c8f |
Ulysses |
Seems to me you just proved his philosophy to him. If he'd been stronger then he'd be alive and we wouldn't be talking. |
00160c8f |
The alternative version:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Done with blame, and Caesar was big on strength making right. Seems to me you proved that philosophy to him. |
00160c83 |
Ulysses |
If he was too weak to stop you, too weak to defend himself, then he needed to die with his beliefs. |
00160c83 |
This dialogue however is highly likely to be intended for if the player convinced Ulysses to abandon the Legion:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Unless you do the same for the Legate that comes you'll get no thanks from me. When that monster arrives, he's not going to have a leash. |
00160c9a |
Ulysses |
Caesar could command him. Not now. The bear's going to burn, and burn slow. |
00160c9a |
Karl#
The player could ask about Karl as well, though it seems Ulysses is not personally acquainted with him:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Heard of him in the East. Surprised they sent him, especially to strike fear into towns on the border. |
00160c88 |
Ulysses |
His hands are clumsy. Towns and tribes are known to bite him back. May not have heard of that shame out here, though. |
00160c88 |
Ulysses |
Legion should have sent Vulpes. The wolf has better instincts in using fear and terror. Most don't see his work until the act's done. |
00160c88 |
Another line about Karl:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
He's a Legion agent. He's at Red Rock Canyon to convince Papa Khan to join him. |
001600d8 |
Legate Lanius#
Ulysses would offer some advice about Legate Lanius when asked if well. Here he talks about the importance of the Legate for the Legion overall:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Caesar wants Hoover Dam. To take it he will need something as big as the old world itself. Another symbol forged by history. |
0015c56f |
Ulysses |
Lanius is it. He carries all the terrors of the East with him. He's the myth, the weapon Caesar needs. |
0015c56f |
Ulysses |
When he arrives, he'll fall on Hoover Dam like a hammer, break the bear in two. |
0015c56f |
If he had been convinced to turn on Caesar's Legion, Ulysses would offer the player some advice on how to defeat the Legate without resorting to violence:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Player |
||
Ulysses |
You do not need to convince him alone. Draw upon history. That history the bear knows, especially Hanlon. |
0015c561 |
Ulysses |
The past of all legates is not filled with victories. Remind Lanius of this. Put his legend at risk, see what happens. |
0015c561 |
Player |
||
Ulysses |
Put the idea of loss in him. Convince him the bear will not be the twentieth tribe beneath his heel. It will make him pause like nothing on earth. |
0015c566 |
Ulysses |
Lanius and Caesar know the powers of the tribes they conquered. If you meet theirs with 19 tribes of your own |
0015c566 |
Ulysses |
They will know the strength in such an alliance. Gather your own myths, have them join you at Hoover Dam. That will make Lanius pause. |
0015c566 |
More dialogue on Lanius:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Lanius the butcher, monster, terror of the East. |
0015c569 |
Ulysses |
Not even his slaves have seen his face. Struck them blind so they can't. Wears a mask. Don't even know if it's the same man. |
0015c569 |
Ulysses |
He put Colorado to the sword. Broke the Hang Dogs by throwing their hounds upon the flames so they might burn forever in the after life. |
0015c569 |
Vulpes Inculta#
Ulysses has dialogue providing additional backstory on Vulpes, specifically his methods and his role within Caesar's Legion. Here he elaborates on how Vulpes will erase a tribe's history:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Murdering history isn't hard these days. In the old world they had to hide it or change the words. Now it's just men keep the tales. |
0015c55f |
Ulysses |
Vulpes knows this, goes right for the shamans, keepers of the way and their symbols - books, murals - whatever they use to tell history. |
0015c55f |
Ulysses |
Once he's twisted or killed them he's reduced a tribe's past to a single generation. Anything before his gun. |
0015c55f |
If Vulpes was dead, he would talk about him in the past tense:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
He infiltrated many settlements and tribes in the East. Coyote, Fox, Mongrel, he was all these tricksters and more. Always the wolf, in the end. |
00160cbc |
Ulysses |
He knew how to murder communities, murder their history. Elders, shamans, anyone who kept their rituals. Vulpes went for them first. |
00160cbc |
Ulysses |
He knew what symbols and history meant. Kill a tribe's history, they'll turn to the next symbol. The Legion flag, bull and its horns. |
00160cbc |
He would use this dialogue if asked about Vulpes before the reveal. This is evident by the fact that he acts as though he is not personally acquainted with Vulpes. The abrupt end to the conversation is likely Ulysses trying to avoid revealing too much about his true role.

History of the East I'd agree with you. Legates come like hammers, Vulpes like a knife across the throat. |

He's Caesar's eye. If the legates are hammers and machetes, Vulpes is the poison blade. |
0015c56e |
Ulysses |
He walks, listens, learns his enemy. Then he kills them, sometimes by killing the strength around them. |
0015c56e |
Ulysses |
He is a murderer. Not just men, tribes, nations. He can kill a people's history in a single night. |
0015c56e |
Player |

Ulysses |
He wears a wolf's head like others in Caesar's service. For them it's a token. For Vulpes it's skin. |
0015c565 |
Ulysses |
Republic's the bear, Caesar's the bull, and Vulpes - Vulpes is the wolf. Never see him until you are alone, weak, and then his fangs are at your throat. |
0015c565 |
Ulysses |
No use in warning you to avoid him. It would be useless. He comes for you, nothing will stop him. |
0015c565 |

Ulysses |
He walks freely where none of Caesar's men can walk, even in the lights of Vegas. He may not wear Caesar's colors there, but one day he will. |

Vulpes' Death
There is a particularly large amount of dialogue responses as well for reacting to Vulpes' death:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
The Wolf is dead. Too late for the tribes of the East, but… |
00160cb6 |
Ulysses |
The bear should celebrate what you've done for it. You've killed a legend, a new world myth. |
00160cb6 |
He would have some more to say about this:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Now that he's dead, his history should be shared. Keep him from becoming more a myth, if nothing else. |
00160cb5 |
Ulysses |
He was one of Caesar's weapons as much as the Legate Lanius is Caesar's hammer. Vulpes was the Legion's eye, their spy master. |
00160cb5 |
This dialogue seems like it would be used for after Ulysses turns his back on the Legion:
Speaker |
Dialogue |
File |
|---|---|---|
Ulysses |
Without him, the Legion's lost one of their greatest tacticians. Brute force will need to be enough for Hoover Dam. |
00160cbb |
Ulysses |
That's Legate Lanius. He's one of the Legion's greatest, Caesar's hammer. Hoover Dam will be his end, though. |
00160cbb |
If not killed in Ulysses' company, he would have some doubts about whether or not it was Vulpes that died:

Ulysses |
You killed Vulpes? One like him perhaps. Many wear the wolf headdress. |

Location Barks#
Cass was intended to have even more location dialogue than even what was shipped for her. What is revealing for the below is that they are generally for two use cases - either for external locations without a map region (e.g. the 188), or for an internal cell (e.g. the various casinos). The way these were left out and the scripts that make her bark (see the cut VCassTimerRegionBarkScript) were setup suggests they were going to be added to a separate script to handle these cases, but were either forgotten or simply ran out of time to implement.
