This is a sub-page of Proto:Fallout: New Vegas.

A build from late March. Loaded into the memory for this dump are a number of dialogue responses for encounters that were either altered for the final or cut entirely.

Quests

My Kind Of Town#

The original scenario for this quest saw Primm attacked by a group of NCR deserters, as opposed to Powder Gangers in the final. The scene of the attack was also originally the Vikki and Vance Casino, not the Bison Steve. When the quest was revised, the NPCs were repurposed into a separate encounter that occurs later at the casino. Some of their dialogue was retained and adapted for the new scenario, but dialogue specific to this scenario was not carried over. While this dialogue is present in the April build, present here are player prompts and dialogue conditions that help better understand how the conversation would occur and what conditions needed to be met in order to trigger certain interactions.

A Pair Of Dead Desperados#

An unused line was recovered for Alexander's dialogue from this build. The line is not spoken dialogue, but a description of what would be unlocked if the player opted to sell Vance's 9mm Submachine Gun to him in an early version of this quest. It is not yet known however what these "special orders" were exactly:

Speaker

Text

Alexander

[You will now have the ability to place orders for special weapons with Alexander.]

Unused Dialogue

Layla#

A number of unused skill checks are present in the early version of the conversation. This is a luck check used for intimidating the group:

Speaker

Dialogue

Player

<Luck 7> Are you feeling lucky?

Layla

[SUCCEEDED] Not really, and we've already wasted enough ammunition this week. Leave now and there won't be any trouble.

Player

<Luck below 7> I don't think you know who you're messing with.

Layla

[FAILED] You're right be we don't care. Cough up the caps.

A speech check to gain more context on the massacre:

Speaker

Dialogue

Player

<Speech 30> Whoa, why the hostility? If you're hard up for caps, maybe I can help?

Layla

[SUCCEEDED] We needed some caps to pay off our debts from Vegas, then return to the NCR with more than enough caps to offset any reprimand we'd face.

Layla

We didn't mean for anyone to get hurt, and it was huge waste of ammo. They didn't stand a chance.

Layla

It doesn't look like we'll be going home to the NCR anytime soon.

Player

<Speech below 30> I can help if you'll let me!

Layla

[FAILED] I seriously doubt that. You've got about as much personality as a baked potato.

Layla

I'm getting tired of your chatter. Hand over the caps, or we start using you for target practice.

A more difficult speech check:

Speaker

Dialogue

Player

<Speech 50> This looks more like a massacre than self-defense.

Layla

[SUCCEEDED] We just needed caps to pay our debts from Vegas, then return to the NCR with plenty leftover to offset any reprimand we'd face.

Layla

We didn't mean for anyone to get hurt, and it was huge waste of ammo. They didn't stand a chance.

Player

<Speech below 50> Defend yourselves? There are corpses all over this place!

Layla

[FAILED] Yeah, we wiped them out when they drew on us. You'll join them if you don't cough up some caps.

Layla

I think 100 caps should cover this trip into our casino.

A "Terrifying Presence" check: the game determines the response based on whether the player has the perk or not. In the final, there are no alternate responses for if the player does not have the perk, the dialogue choices simply do not appear:

Speaker

Dialogue

Player

[Terrifying Presence] Who you callin' a punk?

Layla

[SUCCEEDED] Oh, uh, well... You're on our turf and need to pay some caps for this trespass. 50 caps should cover it.

Player

[NO PERK] Who you callin' a punk?

Layla

[FAILED] You, punk. You're going to pay a fine if you wanna leave in one piece.

Layla

100 caps should cover it.

This is a response to a failed skill check, but it's not entirely clear what the player prompt was:

Speaker

Dialogue

Layla

[FAILED] Seriously, did you just try to flex? I've seen 8-year-old children with bigger muscles than you.

Layla

Just cough up the caps before you hurt yourself. 100 should cover this little trip into our territory.

These lines are specific to the early version of the quest, notably, they mention the murder of the casino's inhabitants. In the final, the raiders occupy the Bison Steve, and the Vikki & Vance is instead a safe haven.

Speaker

Dialogue

Player

Did you kill these people?

Layla

Unfortunately, yes. They pulled on us as we were trying to rob the bank and we were forced to defend ourselves.

Player

So that's it? You've resorted to murder and raiding to solve your problems?

Layla

Our luck has gone south since we lost all of our money gambling in Vegas. We didn't go AWOL from duty to become raiders.

Layla

The lure of big money and babes hooked us good.

Player

Well they had it coming if they drew on you.

Layla

That's just cold. We weren't looking for blood, just caps to pay off debts from Vegas.

Layla

Then we'd head home to the NCR with more than enough caps to offset any reprimand we'd face.

Layla

We didn't mean for anyone to get hurt, and it was huge waste of ammo. They didn't stand a chance.

These lines are not overly noteworthy, being only slightly different when compared with the final.

Speaker

Dialogue

Player

Why not just turn yourselves in?

Layla

Do you think we're friggin' cowards or something? We're not afraid of the NCR.

Player

Can't we talk this over?

Layla

Target practice it is!

Player

<Pay 50 caps> Okay, here.

Layla

Thanks. Now scram before we have a change of heart.

Neil#

An unused line of dialogue for Neil, the super mutant at Black Mountain. This line is for after Crazy Crazy Crazy has been completed. Here he states he will return to Jacobstown, while in the final he opts to stay behind at Black Mountain:

Speaker

Dialogue

Neil

I'm off to Jacobstown. It's past time I returned. Stop by if you're ever in the area.

Private Lai#

Some dialogue for the cut guard originally positioned outside of the East Pump Station. He was part of an unused stage of the quest The White Wash where the player had to investigate the East Pump Station for information on the supposed water shortage.

Speaker

Dialogue

Player

What is this building?

Lai

This is the East Pump Station. I believe it handles water distribution for this section of New Vegas. I'm no engineer, though.

Lai

This is the East Pump Station. It's for water. Water you drink.

Player

How would I go about getting authorisation to go inside?

Lai

Only Lieutenant Romanowski can give you permission.

Lai

Like I said, you'll need to talk to Lieutenant Romanowski.

Player

I'm investigating a water shortage. Romanowski said I could go in.

Lai

-

Player

Goodbye.

Lai

[The guard nods.]

The Forecaster#

Some text only lines were recovered for Clay, The Forecaster. This is not spoken dialogue, but a description of the original version of the scene. A version exists for each Forecast. In the final there is no special effect for when the Forecaster gives his readings, it is the same as any other spoken dialogue.

Clay

I need to take off my medicine...

Clay

<The screen fades to black. When it fades up, the psychic nullifier is no longer on Clay's head. When he speaks his voice is an eerie whisper.>

Clay

Thinking local? The here and now? Little of interest... things to buy, false hopes and true regrets baked together, a bitter taste.

Clay

Hmm. One person of interest to you. Veronica, when she's here. Secretive Veronica, more than she seems. Look in her pack for the key.

Clay

Forecast: Cloudy, with a chance of friendship.

Clay

<The screen fades to black. When it fades up, Clay is once more wearing the psychic nullifier.>
