VMS28 - Lucky 38 Quest#

Unused NPC
Nelson#
Private Aaron#

An unused NCR Private with the internal ID "NelsonNCRTrooperHostageAAM". He is equipped with a random set of NCR trooper armor. He has a script attached to him also, VNelsonHostageDeath, which is set to update the quest Back In Your Own Backyard upon his death. He appears to be an early version of the unnamed Nelson hostages that appear in the final game.

Camp Golf#
Mags#
A couple of dialogue responses for Mags related to the early version of the Flags Of Our Foul Ups quest are present in this crash dump. On their own they are not too useful, but when looked with additional dialogue recovered from the April 17th build, they help understand how the quest proceeded originally.

At a guess, because he's an authoritarian sadist |

Tell me about it. What the hell are we gonna do? |

He seems to think it will force you to work together. |
|
Mags |
Dammit! I can't believe this. I'm not going to die for these clowns! |

Meet me at the shooting range, I'll help the squad get up to snuff. |
|
Mags |
Maybe you do know your way around a gun - but the squad won't listen to me. |

Poindexter's an arrogant prick, Razz doesn't respect anybody who wasn't a gangbanger, and O'Hanrahan won't even pick up a rifle. They're hopeless. |

Player |
Yes. I think they'll work together better now. |
|
Mags |
Great! I'll get everybody out to the shooting range. |

Maybe you do know your way around a gun. Ok, I think I can convince the rest of the squad, lets do this. |

An unused player line for the quest Wang Dang Atomic Tango suggests the player could program Fisto to be more aggressive:

The Fort#
Dale Barton#
An unused task is alluded to in this build for repairing something for Dale Barton. There is an unused dialogue variable in the VFreeformTheFort quest script called "BartonRepair", likely connected to this cut task. This may be related to The Fort's howitzer, dialogue in the final game states that it was Dale Barton who salvaged the weapon from a military base in Arizona. In the final, it is Lucius who assigns this task to the player.

The fire control systems probably need to be replaced. |

Maybe the gears and stuff just need to be oiled. Want me to take a look? |

Malcolm Holmes#
Some unused dialogue for Malcolm Holmes, where he expands on the background of the quest and the dangers of hunting for stars:

Malcolm Holmes |
There. I've given you some fairly valuable information, so let's just both go our separate ways, okay? |
Player |
I'd like to know more about star hunting. |
Malcolm Holmes |
There's not much more to tell. Get enough stars and the treasure's yours. Run into the wrong hunter with stars in your pockets, and you're history. |
Player |
We're both confused? |
Malcolm Holmes |
That's a pretty bold statement. And you look like you might be able to back it up. But we can deal with each other in a civilized manner, right? |
Malcolm Holmes |
Look, I can tell from the look in your eye that you had no idea what I was talking about regarding those stars. They're dangerous to the ignorant. |
Player |
Tell me more about these star hunters. |
Malcolm Holmes |
The one thing I can say about them is they're all trying to collect as many of those stars as they can. Where they differ is how they go about it. |
Malcolm Holmes |
Some hunters keep to themselves and explore old ruins looking for stars, while others seek out other people who have found them and trade for them. |
Malcolm Holmes |
Then there's the bad ones. There's those that would steal stars from a blind man if they came upon one, and others who'd beat you bloody to get them. |
Malcolm Holmes |
The worst of the lot would have no hesistation putting a bullet between your eyes to separate you from your stars. |
Player |
There's a legend around these parts that they can be exchanged for a fabulous treasure somewhere out in the wastes, if you have enough of them. |
Malcolm Holmes |
There's a legend around these parts that they can be exchanged for a fabulous treasure somewhere out in the wastes, if you have enough of them. |
Malcolm Holmes |
Specifically, if you can find the headquarters of the Sunset Sarsaparilla Company, you'll find a man named Festus there, who guards the treasure. |
Malcolm Holmes |
Now, don't look at me that way. I'm just passing along the word. You can believe it or not as you like. |
Malcolm Holmes |
Ha, listen to me go on. If I don't stop myself now I'll end up talking your ear off about this whole star business. I better get going. |
Malcolm Holmes |
You take care of yourself, you hear? And if you only remember one thing I say, remember this - beware of a man named Allen Marks. |
Malcolm Holmes |
He's the most cutthroat hunter of them all, and he's taken more than a few stars off the corpses of fellow hunters. Don't say you weren't warned. |
Player |
I'm not really sure. What do they look like? |
Malcolm Holmes |
Trust me, you'd know if you'd met them, one way or the other. |
Player |
I suppose not. |
Malcolm Holmes |
Heh, you're lucky I'm your first encounter in the world of star hunting then. Damn lucky. |
Malcolm Holmes |
Those special caps you're carrying there are known as Sunset Sarsaparilla Stars, or just "Stars", as hunters call them. |
Malcolm Holmes |
You may have noticed that even though they're caps, you can't use them to buy anything. Stores won't touch the things. |
Malcolm Holmes |
That's because a select group of people, that'd be the star hunters, are fixing to collect them. And they ain't all friendly like yours truly. |
Player |
I'm not in the mood for guessing, so spill it. |
Malcolm Holmes |
Maybe you are, and maybe you aren't. A fellow can't be too careful these days, especially where those stars are concerned. |
Malcolm Holmes |
Still, you don't seem threatening, so I'll take you at your word for now. At a glance, I'd guess I'm the first hunter you've run into. |
Player |
What's that? |
Malcolm Holmes |
Ah, my mistake. I take it you haven't met any other hunters yet? |
