Preview Image

IGN Pre-Release Screenshot

On the stadium select screen, one of the preview images of Mario Stadium is actually taken from a pre-release screenshot from IGN. This is evident by the IGN watermark being partly visible in the bottom right corner of the preview image, and a little bit of the original image's JPG artifacts can be seen through the texture compression.

Night Back Sign Lighting#

MSSBMarioStadiumNightNameSignLighting.png

In Bob-Omb Derby, the "MARIO STADIUM" sign behind home plate lacks proper lighting for the night stadium, instead retaining the bright lighting from the day version.

Peach Garden#

Wall Ball Painting#

Japanese

American & European

In the Japanese version of the Wall Ball minigame, the painting behind home plate depicts Peach's early design. This oversight was fixed in the American and European releases.

Wario Palace#

Untranslated Sign#

MSSBWarioPalaceUntranslatedSignIngame.png

In Wario Palace, a sign is present behind home plate reading the stadium's Japanese name (Wario Palace) in all versions of the game. This may have been an oversight during localization given the name of the stadium is spelt as one word instead of two seperate words.

Playable Characters#

Playable Character Filenames#

All the playable characters have 00 at the end of their filename, though a few outliers stand out. These characters include Shy Guy (heiho), Petey Piranha (boss_packun), Hammer Bro (HB), and Pianta (monte_B00), the latter being the only playable character who's filename ends in a letter (B possibly standing for blue, Pianta's default color), followed by 00.

Mario#

In the captain select screen in Exhibition and Challenge Mode, Mario's Fireball logo is actually a recolored version of Luigi's Fireball logo given how the shillouette depicts Luigi's head instead of Mario's. This error is also present in an early screenshot of the captain select screen in Exhibition, likely meaning that this graphic was temporary and the developers forgot to change it to the final logo.

Luigi#

Ball Four Animation Batting Stance#

MSSBLuigiBallFourAnimationStartPose.png

When Luigi gets a ball four while batting, the start of his ball four animation starts with a different batting stance than his usual batting charge-up animation. This was likely an early version of the charge-up animation given how Luigi's legs are less bent and how his left hand isn't holding the bat properly.

Yoshi#

Star Title#

Japanese

American & European

In Challenge Mode, Yoshi's title when completing all star missions reads "Crybaby". This title is pulled from Baby Mario's default title, who appears in the status screen right after Yoshi. This error appears in the North American and European releases, but not in the Japanese version, where Yoshi's title reads "スター" (Star) like the rest of the characters when completing all star missions. This appears to have been a mistake during localization, where the developers seemingly forgot to give Yoshi the "Star" title in English.

Birdo#

Bow Cuboids#

MSSBBirdoBowCuboidslInGame.png

Hidden inside of Birdo's bow are two cuboids which act as bones for the bow and animate in-game. These two "bones" are internally named "Bip01 ポニーテール 1" for the green one, and "Bip01 ポニーテール 2" for the blue one. Seeing how the model names translate to "ponytail" and the colors for them resembles 3D Studio MAX's Character Studio biped rigs, it's likely that these were accidentally leftover from the animation exporting tool.

Toadsworth#

Head Model Filename#

In Toadsworth's model, the head model is internally named kinopio_head, which appears to have been reused from Toad and Toadette's head models, which share the exact same filename.

Dry Bones#

Records Menu Icon#

MSSBDryBonesRecordsIconOddity.png

In the MVP's screen of the Records menu, Green Dry Bones' icon is shown instead of Dry Bones' icon. This was likely a last minute error during development, given how Dry Bones and it's alternate colors were the last few characters added to the game according to their character IDs.

Other#

Mysterious Loading Screen Character#

When entering Exhibition on a new save file, The Welcome to Mario Superstar Baseball loading screen has an mysterious grayscale character in third base with proportions similar to Waluigi. This character doesn't appear anywhere else in the game, so this was likely a character thrown in for testing as the screenshot was being taken.

Star Chance Loading Screenshots#

MSSBWhatsAStarChanceLoadingGraphic.png MSSBStarChanceLoadingGraphic.png

In Exhibition mode, both gameplay screenshots on the What's a Star Chance? and Star Chance! loading screens show the Japanese version of the game despite the version of the game being played evident by the HUD matching the one from the Japanese version.

Fielder Lock Mechanic#

When the game is fielding a live ball, a function runs that determines which character should be assigned to catch the ball. The logic for this has several conditions that should be met, one of them checks if the L button is not being pressed. If the L button is being held while fielding, the game skips the function entirely and keeps control of the current fielder instead of the game switching to one closest to the ball. Essentially, holding L functions as a fielder lock.

This obscure fielding mechanic is not explained anywhere in the game, nor is it even mentioned in the manuals for each version of the game. However this was present in the game that Mario Superstar Baseball was built off of, Family Stadium 2003. The only difference is in that game, it was done using the R button instead, confirming this feature to be a carryover from said game and was simply forgotten about as the fielding controls were being tweaked between both games.

Wall Ball Difficulty Level Icons#

In the Japanese version of the Wall Ball minigame, the difficulty icons depict early artwork reminiscent of the cups seen in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!. The only exception is the Flower level icon, which uses its design from Super Smash Bros. Melee. These are leftovers from the E3 Demo and were forgotten to have been updated with the new icons used in the rest of the minigames.
