Regional Differences

This is a sub-page of Cyberpunk 2077/Version Differences.

Careful, you'll lose an eye.

This page or section needs more images.
There's a whole lotta words here, but not enough pictures. Please fix this.
Specifically: Create comparison images of the censored and uncensored versions of the game.

This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically:

  • There isn't a lot of information online talking about the censorship methods, so everything is very muddy.
  • See if these censorship methods affect the romance options in the game.

Censorship#

Some versions of the game included numerous changes to comply with local regulations, such as those enforced by the age rating boards of the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Japan's Computer Entertainment Rating Organization (CERO), just to name a few. These alterations were made to ensure the game met each region's specific content and rating standards. Thanks to the leaked source code, we now know every censorship measure that was implemented. It's also possible that some of these restrictions are remnants from the cancelled Cyberpunk Online project.

  • The code has eight different flags, each representing a specific censorship measure or region-specific modification.

Middle East#

Middle East statement regarding the censorship.

The following changes apply to all regional releases in the Middle East, across every platform, including PC and consoles. Unlike other regions, CD Projekt RED did not disclose the specific censorship measures before release, so players only became aware of these alterations after the game launched. The game received the highest rating in the country, as well as the highest possible rating worldwide: "suitable for ages 21 and above". These regional changes primarily focus on removing or restricting sexual content, LGBTQ+ representation, and certain character customization options.

  • No control over censorship settings in the accessibility menu.
  • No option to remove clothing; characters cannot be made naked.
  • No customization options for genitalia.
  • The removal of LGBTQ+ themes.
    • Removal of non-binary pronoun options.
    • No ability to combine a feminine voice with a masculine body, or vice versa.
  • All sex scenes have been removed.

Japan#

Japanese social-media statement regarding the censorship.

The censorship changes were applied exclusively to the console versions of the game. CD Projekt RED informed players of these specific alterations through a social media statement before the game's release. The censorship in Japan focuses on toning down sexual content, reducing explicit advertising, and softening graphic violence throughout the game.

  • No control over censorship settings in the accessibility menu.
  • Sex scenes remain in the game but fade to black before they fully play out.
  • The more explicit advertisements displayed around the city were censored with a glitch-like filter.
  • All sex toys were taken out.
  • Graphic violence and gore were toned down, with bodies often covered by blankets to reduce explicitness.
