Beta 1.4#
Beta 1.4 was released on March 31st, 2011. This was a fairly big update and included various new content like Cookies, Wolfs and Locked Chests. As well as a new Minecraft logo and various bug fixes. This version was actually re-uploaded around an hour and a half later, in order to remove some debug code. This is also technically Mojang's first ever April Fool's joke version, when regarding the Locked Chest.

The following are two things that were changed in Beta 1.4's title screen.
- The logo no longer animates to be the Minecraft logo, instead it is a static image.
- The logo design itself was changed to be more like the modern Minecraft logo that we have today.
New Blocks/Items#
Locked Chest#
Added as a part of Mojang's first ever official April Fools joke for Minecraft, a block called the 'Locked Chest' was added to the game. They will only appear when your system's date is directly set to April 1st. Funnily enough, on multiplayer, the server console will output "added a chest!!" every single time one generates. They will spawn around the world in various places on the surface and emit a small bit of light during nighttime to make them easier to spot. They are also immune to explosions. They look like normal chests but when interacted with, they would show popup message, indicating the player needs to go to the Minecraft store in order to buy a key to 'open it'.
This would link to a fake Minecraft store webpage that had a bunch of crazy and interesting options at ridiculously high prices, but you actually couldn't really buy anything, as part of the April Fool's joke (attempting to actually check out would give a small minor jumpscare with a Velociraptor with the words "Fiddlesticks!!!1"). Strangely, if the user had an insane number of items in the shopping cart totalling to a price of at least $10,000, the site would flash in random different colors, a small message warning for those prone to seizures would precede this. This was all a parody of Valve's Team Fortress 2 Mann Co. Supply Crates, where a key had to be purchased with real money in order to open them.
After this update, they were quickly disabled from spawning all together, and existing ones that were placed would decay and disappear like leaves. Slowly but surely in the coming updates, Locked Chests were slowly deprecated, they lost their original textures and also didn't receive any changes that the regular chests got, before finally being fully removed in Release 1.7.2.
Cookies#
A new food source, Cookies, has been added to the game. They can be crafted with Wheat and Coco Beans, the latter now being able to be found in Dungeon chests in this version. They restore half a heart of health when consumed and can be stacked up to 8 in the inventory, being the first ever food source to stack up before Beta 1.8 made it available for all other foods.
Wolfs#
A new mob, Wolfs, have now been added to the game and work just like how they do in modern versions. They are neutral mobs that spawn mainly in Taiga biomes. They can be tamed using bones to become a pet that can accompany and defend the player from hostile threats. Their health is measured with how high up their tales are and can be fed with raw porkchops.
Miscellaneous Changes#
Below is a list of various small miscellaneous changes that happened in this version.
- The missing texture placeholder image has been added to the game and will now appear on blocks that have missing textures.
- Sleeping in a Bed will now reset your spawn position, though this is bugged and doesn't work all of the time (this was fixed in Beta 1.4_01).
- Sneaking while climbing a ladder now makes the player hang on to it.
- Wheat crops grow a bit faster now.
- Pink and Brown colored Sheep can now naturally spawn!
- Spiders can no longer accidentally trample crops and have oddly lost their walking sounds.
- Basic infrastructure for Achievements and Statistics has been added in the back-end and will appear fully visible and functional by Beta 1.5.
- The new default hotkey for the inventory has been changed from I to E.
- A world seed option in the multiplayer server configuration file is now present.
- UI Scale options can now be manually changed in the options.txt file.
- Includes various bug fixes related to Mobs only being able to reach the player in certain scenarios and the player's arm animation related to swinging. Also, client-side Slime spawning on multiplayer has been fixed.
Beta 1.4_01#
Beta 1.4_01, released on April 5, 2011, was a very minor update, mainly made to patch Locked Chests after the April Fool's event was over, (Locked Chests no longer spawn if set to April 1st, and existing worlds with them placed/spawned naturally will have them decay like leaves) and also to try and fix an issue with respawning via Beds not working correctly.
Changes & Fixes#
- Locked Chests no longer spawn on April 1st and now decay like leaves.
- Fixed a bug with Beds not changing the respawning position of players.
