After Infdev, and starting on June 30, 2010 and ending on August 23, 2010, was the the initial stretch of the Alpha phase of Minecraft's development, otherwise known as Alpha 1.0 of Minecraft.

Infdev 20100630-1835/Alpha 1.0.0#

This was a updated secondary release of Infdev 20100630-1340, and it marks the very beginning of the Alpha development stage, despite the game still calling itself "Minecraft Infdev" in-game. In his blog, Notch would decide to retroactively add this version to the start of the Alpha stage of development, right after releasing Alpha 1.0.1 (making this version retroactively Alpha 1.0.0).1 Known changes from Infdev 20100630-1340 include basic changes to sand and gravel beach generation, and to fix a bug that could cause the player to spawn at Y=0.

Alpha 1.0.1#

Unlike the previous version, Alpha 1.0.1 is the first version to to be referred to as and display as "Minecraft Alpha" in-game. It was released on July 2nd, 2010 as the "Seecret Friday 3 Update" (Seecret Friday updates were a special kind of updates done by Notch that were started in Infdev, and were fairly big new updates that would release every Friday, where the changes and additions were up to the players to discover). This version is currently unfortunately lost, but the changes are still documented (and also seen in the next version, of course).

  • In this update, Redstone (both as a block and as a game mechanic) and Redstone-related items were added to the game. These include:
    • Redstone Ore, Redstone Dust, and Redstone Torches. At this point, however, they are referred to as "Red Ore", "Red Ore Dust", and "Red Ore Torch" respectively, though they would be quickly changed to "Redstone" shortly afterwards.
    • Iron Doors
    • Levers
    • Wooden and Stone Pressure Plates
    • Stone Buttons
  • Wooden and Stone Stairs now used a proper 3D model in the inventory (previously they were a 2D texture of the side of the regular Wooden planks and Cobblestone), though the dimensions of the inventory stair model still looks a bit off.
  • The door item preview in the inventory now has windows to match the actual design.
  • Mushrooms can now grow anywhere in the shade, even on grass blocks.
  • Signs are now much smaller and can now be placed on the sides of blocks.
  • Mob AI has been improved.
  • Caves are now much bigger in overall depth and size, and Coal, Gold and Diamond Ore veins now vary in size and amount but generate much more frequently.
  • Gears from all the way back in Indev have now been completely removed, due to them being directly replaced with Redstone dust.

Alpha 1.0.1_01#

Released not long after on July 2nd, 2010 (same day as Alpha 1.0.1), this version fixed a bug related to Linux mice. This is the oldest available archive version of Alpha to be referred as such in-game.

Alpha 1.0.4#

Released on July 9th, 2010, Alpha 1.0.4 was released as the "Seecret Friday 4" update and is the oldest version directly available in the modern launcher.

  • The Mojang Specifications logo have been added, replacing the previous "Loading..." text in the bottom-left hand corner seen on previous versions.
  • In this version, Winter/Snow Worlds have been added and any new world has a 25% of generating as a snow world. The world a will be in this forever snow phase for as long as you play it and the entire world will be like this, no matter how far you go out. Regular worlds are unchanged in this version. It would remain this way until just before the end of Beta and the early pre-release versions.
