Beta 1.8#

Title Screen#

Beta 1.7.3

Beta 1.8

The following are things that were changed in Beta 1.8's title screen..

  • The old dirt background (that has been around since Indev) was replaced with the final iconic panorama.
  • The indicator that showed what version of Minecraft you were playing was colored white and moved to the bottom of the screen instead of the top.
  • The period at the end of "distribute" was replaced with an exclamation mark.

Multiplayer Screen#

Beta 1.7.3

Beta 1.8

In Beta 1.8, the Mutliplayer Menu was given an overhaul to something that is fairly close to what we have now. The following are things that were changed in Beta 1.8's multiplayer screen.

  • All that text saying Minecraft's Multiplayer is buggy and is not finished was removed from the screen. Interestingly, the text is still present in the game's language files.
  • Just like the modern version, you can now create a list of a bunch of servers to choose from and you can see their MOTD, connection status, a provided name, and IP address.
  • This direct connection menu can be accessed normally by clicking the "Direct Connect" button.
  • The "Join Server", "Refresh", "Delete" and "Edit" buttons have been added as well.

World Creation Screen#

Beta 1.7.3

Beta 1.8

The following are things that were changed in Beta 1.8's world creation screen.

  • The "Create New World" and "Cancel" buttons were moved more to the bottom of the screen and were listed horizontally rather than vertically.
  • The addition of Creative Mode means that you now have to choose between Survival and Creative mode (although Survival is automatically selected).
  • The "More World Options..." button was added containing the world seed text box and several other new world generation options (see below).

In-Game#

Beta 1.7.3

Beta 1.8

The following are things that were changed in Beta 1.8 in-game.

  • The listed development version in the top-right hand corner of the screen has returned after being absent since Beta 1.6.5.
  • One of the big massive changes that Beta 1.8 was known for, was the addition of sprinting and the Hunger and XP Bar, they work just like how they are in the modern Release versions. Sprinting diminishes the Hunger Bar and the player has to eat to restore their hunger, otherwise they'll lose the ability to sprint and will slowly starve. Eating now includes proper sounds and an eating animation, and Mobs now drop XP when killed.
    • Speaking of the Hunger Bar being added, food items can now finally stack! (As well as much more food types being added overall)
  • Several new Mobs (Enderman, Cave Spider and Silverfish), blocks, items and generated structures (Villages, Strongholds and Abandoned Mineshafts) have been added to the game.
  • The terrain generation has seen a radical change from the older Alpha and Beta style and is closer to the very early release versions with its simpler and more flat terrain with large oceans.
    • With the new terrain generation, several Alpha and Beta biomes have been removed while some brand new Beta 1.8 ones have been added instead.
  • A new lighting engine has been added.

Added Features and Menus#

The transition from Beta 1.7.3 to Beta 1.8 had quite a few things that were introduced.

Creative Mode#

The final Creative Mode we all know and love has now finally been added! Though it will go through a few minor changes. It is basically the gameplay of Minecraft Classic Creative, now with the bunch more blocks and items added since then. It closely resembles the current version of Minecraft.

This menu is titled "Item selection".

In the "Item selection" menu, things look very different from the latest version of Minecraft.

Here are a few examples:

  • Blocks and items are not organized into their separate menus so things are just an absolute mess.
  • The block previews lack lighting.
