This is a sub-page of Prerelease:Super Mario 64 (Nintendo 64).

Very little is known of this build, as there are only three short clips of Mario fighting Bowser in Bowser in the Dark World:

Final

  • Like the previous builds, Mario starts the game with 2 lives instead of 4.
  • The mini-map has been removed, and so the Coin counter was moved to the top right, making it much closer to the final placement.
  • There's less spacing between the counters, and the Coin and Star icons are swapped.
  • Shadows now use the final's smoother texture.
  • Bowser now has a shadow while being held.

  • Just like December 1995, Mario still uses the Mario_old head model, but with his final, less harsh lighting. The sideburn texture has been darkerned, matching the final game.
  • Mario blinks more often, like the Shoshinkai '95 demo.
  • The camera is still positioned higher while grabbing Bowser.
  • The arena lacks the slight dark fog.
  • Strangely, Bowser goes in front of the HUD; though this could simply be an edit for the commercial this clip originates from.

  • There are still no dust particles when Bowser bounces off the ground.
  • The smoke that comes out after the bomb explodes is now transparent and static, like the final game.
  • Bowser doesn't turn towards the center of the arena after hitting a bomb.
  • According to a developer interview, Luigi was removed sometime in February 1996, around the time of this build.
—By the way, what happened to Luigi?

Miyamoto: Well… until February, he was in the game. (laughs) Ultimately, due to memory issues, we had to take him out. Then we were going to include him in a Mario Bros. style minigame, but because most users probably only have that one controller when they first buy their N64, for that reason (and others) we decided not to.
