Resident Evil: Dead Aim is the fourth and final game in the Gun Survivor series, taking place aboard a hijacked cruise ship. This concept had been previously explored in Resident Evil Gaiden, and would later be revisited in Resident Evil: Revelations.
The player controls Bruce MacGavin McGivern, a member of US STRATCOM, and Fong Ling, a member from China's Intelligence Agency. They are hunting down Morpheus D. Duvall, a vengeful beauty-crazed former Umbrella manager, on an ocean liner called Spencer Rain, which is filled with guests and employees that are infected with the T-Virus. They then end up in the sewers for the back half of the game while dealing with the t+G-Virus, a new virus which is introduced and then... never brought up again in the series.
Regional Differences#
Cutscene Translation Errors#
Like many Resident Evil games, the Japanese version features English voices with Japanese subtitles. Strangely, in the international versions, the English subtitles, rather than matching the English dialogue, were directly translated from Japanese. This results in almost every cutscene having subtitles that do not line up with the dialogue at all.
Cutscene Dialogue Change#
During the cutscene where Fong Ling and Bruce meet, Fong Ling tells Bruce she knows his first name. In the English version, she reveals Bruce's surname. Bruce then adds that Morpheus is "blackmailing" both the US and China, a line that is not in the Japanese version.
File Translation Errors and Changes#
- In "Research Report 220329", Tyrant prototype "091" is erroneously referred to as "T-091" instead. This is inaccurate due to the Tyrant being named after version 0.9.1 of the t+G-Virus used for creating it, and is not a "batch number" as the translated file implies.
- The intro of "Restructuring Notice" was cut in some areas, which causes the English version to leave out why Morpheus was dismissed from working with Umbrella. The translation wrongfully states he was blamed for the Raccoon Incident, whereas the original script states that he was blamed for the Arklay Mountains incident. The Japanese script also implies Morpheus was in a management position within the company.
- The September 21 entry of the "Ship's Log" file was slimmed down significantly. The fact Umbrella had brought B.O.W.s onto the ocean liner was changed to the Captain fearing that "the ones" have escaped. The localization removes that the Captain was hearing strange noises, which leads to the localization causing a mystery of how the Captain knew they had escaped. The September 22 entry noting that Morpheus' "armed gang" was hijacking the ship is completely missing as well.
- In "Operators Notebook", the notebook clarifies that a lot of Umbrella workers at the waste disposal facility had died in an accident. The Japanese version has the notebook's author wondering how long he will survive at the facility.
- In "Architect's Memo", the biosphere designer is concerned with how Morpheus will handle running the base after his dismissal. In the Japanese script, he refers to the Arklay Mountains incident in May that led to his apparent dismissal as a "so-called biohazard". Conversely, the English version wrongfully alludes to the Raccoon City incident, which was destroyed a month after his dismissal.
- The latter half of "Research Report 220120", which clarifies that there were Queen (女王?) and Guard (衛兵?)-type bee enemies in the Waste Disposal facility, was removed.
