This prototype is documented on Hidden Palace.

A very early prototype of Super Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.

General Differences#

This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: Find more general differences in the game.

  • The game boots directly into the first level, with the logo displayed onscreen.
  • While there are some music tracks, the sound effects are completely absent.
  • The HUD is slightly different, mainly the character's icons, because they all default to Luke's icon with an incorrect color palette.
  • When playing as Luke, all of his Force powers from Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back are accessible and (mostly) are in perfect working order, while in the final, the only Force powers still in the game are Saber, Deflect, Freeze, Vanish, and Heal.
  • None of the levels are completable yet.
  • None of the cruiser or boss stages (except the final fight against Darth Vader) have been implemented yet.
  • The game's debug features are activated by default.
  • The game appears to be in an unfinished state, considering that this prototype features lots of leftovers from Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, such as the music, some graphics (like Luke's icon at the top left corner of the screen), and many more which will be covered later.
  • When playing as Luke, pressing A will let you (oddly enough) switch back to your blaster, which doesn't seem to have any programming in it so it doesn't work. In the final game, you're stuck with just your lightsaber with no switching back.
  • The game over screen in the prototype in certain levels has the screen from Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back with your character on the screen falling to their death repeatedly, causing graphical freak-outs each time. The final game over screen has Palpatine looking at the screen laughing constantly.

Super The Empire Strikes Back

Proto

Final

Selecting "TRY AGAIN" will do as it should: start you at the beginning of the stage. However, if you actually manage to select the "GAME OVER" option in the short amount of time you're given, you'll be brought to a very buggy version of the title screen.

Title Screen#

Super The Empire Strikes Back

Proto

Final

If you wait on the title screen long enough and the game vacates to the demo, the demo will show the player character fruitlessly trying to get out of the ground that the game spawned them in, which appears to be in an early version of the "Jabba's Palace" level that will be covered in a bit. After the demo, the game then displays a very broken version of the opening logo animation from Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back before showing the title screen again, which now has glitched out stars in the background scrolling to the left.

If you press "PASSWORD" on the glitched-out title screen, a transition will play, and then the game will crash shortly after. If you press "OPTION MENU", it will function as normal, except for the fact that for some reason there's a "SPEED" option, which has no numbers directly next to it so it does nothing. Due to what will be described next, these options are rendered useless.

If you press the "START GAME" option, you'll be brought to a very glitched version of the opening crawl, where the text for "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..." appears to be made out of garbage graphics, the normal text appears to be zoomed in by a lot and distorted as well, and shortly after the zoomed-in distorted text disappears, the game softlocks.

Stage Differences#

"Tower"/"Throne Room"#

The graphics used in this version of the stage has slightly different graphics than the final version. On top of that, most of the objects seen in the final version are completely absent in this version, with only a handful of Stormtroopers placed at the very start of the level. For some reason, this is the first stage the game drops you in when the game turns on.

"Tatooin"#

This stage features a different background alongside a slightly different heatwave effect. The background repeats the part of the background that contains the building, where the final saves it for the end. This stage also features an unused enemy that does nothing but hop up and down. The stage also features a slightly different layout than the final.
