Unused Stages#

To do:

  • Document the stages' puzzle grids and lineart (like in this image, but preferably in native resolution).
  • Check whether the placeholder stage can also be loaded in-game, and add a screenshot of it like the other stages have if so.

Present in the ROM are several stages that aren't accessible in-game. Enable GameShark code 01??25D6 01??2BD6 (where "??" is one of the below), then choose any stage:

Notably, "Pikachu Forest" has no game counterpart in Gen I or Gen II. The name and image are likely a reference to the anime episode "Pikachu's Goodbye", which first aired in Japan in April 1998.

The same code can also be used to load the unique tutorial and title-screen-demo "stages", which are fully-functional despite not normally being playable directly (though the former is treated as a 10×10 puzzle rather than 5×5). This is technically the only way to see the name string for the Poké Ball puzzle, as the actual tutorial names it in dialogue text instead of using the standard interface.

All of these puzzles are located after the Safari Picross stages in the internal stage order except for Togepi, which is placed between the unlockable Mew stage and the start of Safari Picross.

Additionally, the final 18 slots of puzzle data contain copies of a placeholder name string (けつばん, "missing number"; presumably unrelated to the glitch Pokémon of the same name) and puzzle grid (a 30×30 grid with only a simple X shape drawn).
