Title Screen#

E3 2003

Prototype 9.28

Prototype 10.8

NPDP Prototypes onward

While the earlier 9.28 build already had the final version of the title screen (albeit unfinished), this build's title screen is more or less identical to the E3 prototype (only without the E3 logo); this is the last known build to use the early design for the title screen, as the final version is used in the currently-undumped GameCube 10.13 prototype. Not all elements of this title screen went to waste; if the player doesn't get an A rank on all missions and bosses after finishing the game, this screen is shown on the "Get all A-Rank!" screen. It isn't exactly the same like how it's shown here, however.

General#

The menu screen in general contains some notable differences where...

  • No music plays. The main menu music is present, but it goes unused in this build.
  • Japanese text is selected by default, but can be changed to English from the menu.
  • You can only move up and down in the main menus.
  • The background circle is brighter than usual, in which appears to use a different texture color op used.
  • Some grammar issues are present in the English text.

Data#

Prototype 10.8

Final

The save data is more or less identical to the previous build, with some differences either being unchanged or containing more changes:

  • You cannot go left before the first file. SonicHeroesPrototype10.8-Space.png
  • The menu displays a "space" UI for how much storage was left in the console's memory (similar to Sonic Adventure 2), which was removed entirely in the final.
  • The menu hint is included, which is absent in the final. Pressing Y does nothing here and will make the game softlock, however.

Prototype 10.8

Final

  • The infamous "Copy" feature still hasn't been removed yet, but just like before, choosing this option will softlock the game.
  • No save/load slots have numbers or dashes (for an empty save file) in them.

SonicHeroesPrototype10.8-FileSelectButtons.png

  • The Select / Cancel UI was updated here to feature the GameCube controller buttons, despite being removed in the final. Unlucky No. 07!
  • Since this prototype has the same game ID as the final and a different save function, saving the game for that file will cause it to become corrupted, so be sure to take out your Memory Card before doing this on a real hardware.

Omochao Hint#

Prototype 10.8

Final

Omochao, you're facing the wrong way!
That's more like it!

The Omochao menu hints are still not implemented, although pressing Y makes a glitched Omochao graphic appear briefly.

Story Mode#

Prototype 10.8

Final

On the team select screen, the characters' positions are off and they are in different poses. This remains unchanged from the 9.28 prototype, except...

  • There's no longer a percentage of how much you've progressed through the story.
  • The last story is now unlocked from the start.

Challenge (Stage Select)#

Prototype 10.8

Final

The challenge menu is still buggy, and:

  • Much like the story mode, the characters' positions aren't finalized, only now the visuals for Team Sonic and Team Rose aren't broken.
  • Some character models clip through each other.
  • There's no longer a counter of how many Emblems you've collected so far.
    • Likewise, the HUD for how long it took to finish that level, the amount of Rings you've collected, and the amount of points you've scored are also gone.

CG Theater#

Prototype 10.8

Final

The CG Theater menu functions identically to the 9.28 prototype, only now every CG cutscenes are shown to be locked, including the opening cinematic (which is unlocked right from the start in the final).

Audio Room#

  • Much like the 9.28 prototype, trying to play songs will do nothing. Because of this, one music goes completely unused.
  • The game will crash if the player enter certain different menus and tries to access this menu afterwards.

Rumble Setting#

Prototype 10.8

Final

The Rumble Setting is still labeled as "Vibration Setting" in the GameCube version.

Language Setting#

Prototype 10.8

Final

While the Language setting was updated from the previous build, the Korean text can still be selected here. In the final game, the Korean text cannot be selected on the GameCube version outside of the Korean PlayStation 2 releases and the Windows version.

Emblem Screen#

To do:
More differences to cover.

Prototype 10.8

Final

Looks familiar, doesn't it?

Like the 9.28 prototype, there is a VERY different, yet with an unfinished and unpolished, look for the Emblem screen. It...

  • Has incorrect textures and the animation appears to be a placeholder.
  • Contains the word SONIC HEROES written on the bottom of the character type icons that was removed in the final.
  • Lacks a counter for how many Emblems you've collected so far.
  • Has no jingle for when you unlock an Emblem.
