Gran Turismo 2

This page details one or more prototype versions of Gran Turismo 2.

A number of demo builds of Gran Turismo 2 was made available to the public, typically via magazine demo discs, before and after the game's release. These builds cover a little less than two months of development and, at the latest, predate the initial Japanese retail build by two months.

Two standalone prototypes, built after the initial Japanese retail version, have also been dumped and shared online.

General Notes#

All five demos offer the same small amount of content by default:

• Three vehicles may be selected and driven by the player in Arcade Mode — Ford Mustang GT '99, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution V GSR '98 and Fiat Coupe 20V Turbo.
• Course selection is not available, with Rome Circuit Full Course being the only accessible track. Other circuits are demonstrated via attract replays.
• Unlike late demos of the original Gran Turismo, races are set to one lap with no time limit.
• A preview of Gran Turismo Mode is available, with 12 dealerships being partially accessible.
• Regardless of the demo's intended region, units of measurements reflect that of the Japanese version (PS for power, kg for weight, and km/h for speed).

With the exception of GT Mode, which uses a special set of demo assets, content not available for use remains in the game's data and may be accessed by using a cheat device or other forms of memory manipulation.

Aside from the September 21 demo using GT1's replay mix of "Moon Over the Castle" during races, no menu or in-game music is present, unused or otherwise. A song list found in Western demo executables suggests GT1 music might have been used as a placeholder at some point, but no corresponding stream data is included in them.
