This is a sub-page of Proto:Gran Turismo 2/August 30, 1999 Demo Build.

Work on Arcade Mode progressed a good bit since the July 29 build and, at least on the surface, it is even closer to final.

The biggest addition to this build is the possibility of players using cars from their GT Mode garage instead of relying solely on vehicles present in the predefined classes. While the Load Guest Garage button is first seen here, it is a placeholder and, like Goodies, follows the same menu flow as Single Player.

With support to player garages being partially implemented, two new buttons have been added to the Class Selection menu: Home Garage and Guest Garage. As this is a demo build and no form of game progression is possible, they are disabled by default, but removing their locks reveals that the menus are functional and that 100 work-in-progress cars — everything with associated physics and opponent data at this point — are present for testing purposes.

The font and formatting of most text was tweaked on the Car Selection menu, improving legibility to an extent. These elements mostly match the final product now, but placement of Weight, Max Power and Max Torque info still differs slightly.

The garage list pages already are mostly the same as the finished product in terms of functionality: placement of color squares, car names and class letters matches final, but performance calculation is capped at Class-A. The background of list items sports a brushed aluminum texture with square borders — this would be replaced by a solid gray graphic with round borders. This old texture remained in use until fairly late into development, appearing as the background of items on the Trade menu of the November 28, 1999 retail build of GT2.

Due to differences in car data and the performance calculation code, certain vehicles — such as the Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 Vspec (n24vn) and BMW 328i Saloon (gb28n) — are listed as one class below their intended performance levels, resulting in the player being pitted against inferior competition if selected from the garage.

The car selection portion of the garages is also mostly final at this point, with the biggest difference being the presence of rpm values and a power/torque graph just like on the preset Car Selection screen.

Course Selection#

The Course Selection menu includes all implemented courses now. The "TOTAL RECORD" and "FASTEST LAP" text had its font size increased, times and car names were moved slightly upwards and gradient bars were added to the background.

Like in the previous demo, this menu is skipped under normal circumstances, but picking a car from either Home or Guest Garage allows it to be seen. Regardless of what track is selected, the player is forced to drive on Rome Circuit Full Course.

The two-player menus received a cleanup and are now closer to the final product in terms of functionality. Since the Dirt Trial mode is not implemented yet, Game Selection is skipped. Minor cosmetical discrepancies persist, and attempting to start a race results in a black screen when the starting grid is supposed to appear.

Interestingly, Class-S appears as an option by default here, but the only vehicles present in it are the two Class-A models normally available in the demo, likely as they are the first on the list of Arcade menu cars.

Starting Grid#

The Starting Grid screen now has the same title dimensions as the final product, while the track name was shifted eight pixels to the left. The track name does not appear by default, but it will be shown if the player picks a car from either garage instead of one of the preset classes.

Car Classes#

The preset Arcade Mode car collection received minor updates since the July 29 demo.

Class-A received a minor update at some point after the last build, with the removal of the Audi S4 (gas4n) and the inclusion of the Lotus Elise 190 (io19n), which already had a corresponding graphic in arc_carlogo but lacked a body mesh. The Chevrolet Corvette Coupe '96 (ccrcn) had its logo updated to yet another early design as well.

Class-B#

November 28 Retail

Class-B remained mostly the same as before, but now features the Audi TT 1.8T quattro (gattn), another car model that had an unused, early logo in the previous demo's data in spite of lacking a unique body mesh. As in the final product, it is listed between the Alfa Romeo 156 2.5 V6 24V (ia54n) and the BMW 328i (gb28n).

Opponent Cars#

The set of opponents that may spawn in a Class-C race received a minor update since the last demo build: the Suzuki Alto Works RS/Z (x2a8n) was removed from the pool of possible competitors. This exclusion is likely linked to the car's data — stored in both carparam/arcade_data.dat and carparam/gtmode_data.dat — being partially reassigned to the unfinished Alto Works RS/X (x2axn), which not only leaves the RS/Z without an opponent entry but also renders it unusable if a GameShark code is used to pick it via Car Selection.
