This is a sub-page of Proto:Gran Turismo 2/September 21, 1999 Demo Build.

While the regular demo flow remains mostly unchanged from previous builds, other aspects of Arcade Mode have been updated, with certain placeholders being replaced with proper functions and one menu receiving a fresh coat of paint.

The Time Attack game mode now uses a dedicated HUD, which remains mostly the same as the regular race HUD, only omitting the number of laps and position indicator. The final product takes modifications one step further and ditches the "Total Time" section in favor of displaying up to six lap timers, also moving the lap counter 16 pixels to the right.

Two more manufacturer logos used on the Car Selection menu have been updated to their final designs.

Car Selection (Rally)#

September 21 Demo

November 28 Retail

The Dirt Trial option under Game Selection now takes the user straight to a Car Selection menu populated by rally cars, skipping the Class Selection step present in the final product. This is noticeably unfinished, as it contains just four valid vehicles and is not coded to stop the player from scrolling past these, so further "cars" appear with the body of a Mitsubishi Galant VR-G '96 (mgagn) and bogus stats, and scrolling past the fourth of them crashes the game.

It is presumed that, after choosing a car, the player would be taken to a Course Selection menu featuring two dirt tracks — no name dirt (Smokey Mountain North) and Tour de tahiti (Safari crouse)(sic) (Tahiti Dirt Route 3). However, as picking a rally car from the garage is not an option yet, the player is instead forced through the same demo menu flow as picking a road car from Class-A/B/C, which skips Course Selection and breaks the game just like in the Time Attack mode.

Course Selection#

Course Selection has been updated and in general looks closer to the finished version:

  • The track name has been moved down by 10 pixels and an orange background gradient now appears as in the final version;
  • The course map is now drawn over a wireframe of the track and its surroundings, like in final, and a small arrow pointing to the forward direction of the course is now present. However, it still consists of dotted lines, contains a checkered flag at the start/finish line and lacks sector markings;
  • The track logo is gone, leaving the left half of the screen empty;
  • "Total Record" has been removed, with "Fastest Lap" inheriting its blue background gradient, and the time and car name text had their font color adjusted to blue. While the lap record updates properly after a Time Attack session, "No Record" continues to appear where the car name is supposed to go.

Instead of containing entries for all implemented tracks like the last two demos, this build's menu only lists seven road courses. One of them — the one labeled parama2 — hangs the game when selected, presumably due to developer oversight as the course is actually referred to as both new_parmaS and parma2 internally. Coincidentally, an identical misspelling is the root cause of a bug in the final product.

Starting Grid#

The selected track's name no longer appears on the Starting Grid loading screen under any conditions, making it effectively identical to the final product.

Car Classes#

Class-A#

While no changes have been made to the Class-A roster since the August 30 demo, arc_carlogo now contains a logo graphic for the Ford Mustang SVT Cobra '99 (ufc9n), the vehicle that would eventually replace the Mustang GT '99 (ufm9n) in this class.

19 entries not present in this build

As mentioned before, a very rough version of the Rally Car class is present in this build. Three of its four cars would appear in the final roster, while one — the Gran Turismo special model Subaru Impreza Rally Car (sipxr) — ended up replaced by the newly introduced Impreza Rally Car '99 (s2irr).

Opponent Cars#

This build features a number of updates in terms of opponents able to spawn in Arcade Mode's races. Changes previously made to vehicles featured on the Car Selection menus are finally reflected on the races themselves, the Suzuki Alto Works RS/Z (x2a8n) has been restored to the Class-C lineup, and future additions — namely the 1999 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra (ufc9n) and Plymouth PT Spyder (ulpsn) — are added to the fold as well.

Unused Content#

In addition to the seven maps assigned to tracks on the Course Selection menus, eight more unique graphics exist in arcade/course_map. Three of these are visibly unfinished, with another of them — the one depicting Clubman Stage Route 5 — actually serving as a placeholder for Rome Short and indi according to arcade/course_mapinfo.
