This is a sub-page of Proto:Gran Turismo 2.
This European demo of Gran Turismo 2 is the second latest demo build of the game available to the public and the most recent distributed in the West. It is featured on demo discs such as Euro Demo 53 (SCED-01827), and is dated two months and three weeks before the initial Japanese retail version.

Arcade Mode Differences#
The Time Attack game mode (known as Time Trial in Western versions of GT2) first appears in a functional state in this demo, and is accessed by selecting the relevant option on the Game Selection menu. The menu flow remains the same as when Road Race is selected, however, with a Level Selection menu appearing despite the absence of computer-controlled opponents. Dirt Trial follows the same flow and launches the same game mode when selected.
Although the player has the choice of picking a car from one of the preset classes, using a vehicle from either Home or Guest Garage is required here, as the Course Selection menu is skipped otherwise and the game hangs at the loading screen, because no track is selected and this game mode is not coded to force-load Rome Circuit. If the player enters this game mode without loading a race or attract replay first, the car's launch speed will be set to 0 km/h instead of the intended 100 km/h.

As this mode essentially is a one-car race at this point, the regular race HUD is used. With the "event" being set to 100 laps and the lap counter not being coded to use three characters, "100" is erroneously rendered as "R0." The final product uses a dedicated time trial HUD, which removes the total number of laps, position indicator and "Total Time" section, allowing up to six lap timers to be displayed.

In terms of functionality, Time Attack is closer to the final game's Free Run at this point, as support for best lap ghosts is not implemented yet and the session's replay starts at lap 1 rather than the last full lap minus two.

Unlike the final game's Time Attack, which allows the player to drive indefinitely (with the lap counter freezing at 100 and laps beyond 998 not being registered) despite being set to 100 laps internally, the session here does end once that goal is reached, acting like a race with a "Finish" message and results screen.

The race HUD received changes that bring it closer to the final product:
- The "START" text has been moved up by 20 pixels;
- Background bars are now present underneath the "Total Time" and "Lap Time" labels;
- Placeholder timers no longer appear during the first two laps of the race;
- The tachometer now uses the final design, albeit without a black outline around the numbers. The current gear indicator now has a transparent background;
- "Course Record" and "Best Lap" now appear on the top right corner of the screen. The course record itself is updated during races here, while the final product only does so during Time Attack/Time Trial sessions.

Sector and lap times first appear in this demo. No indication of which checkpoint has been crossed is shown yet, and no time difference is displayed either.

In addition to the general race HUD changes, the replay HUD received modifications regarding lap timers, as only one timer is shown at a time and the full lap time is visible for the entirety of a given lap now.

Opponent and Event Data#
The normally inaccessible 'DEMO' race events and their associated opponents have received a few updates since the August 30 demo. While they're still primarily stored in carparam/arcade_data.dat, a slightly earlier copy of this data also exists in carparam/gtmode_data.dat; discrepancies between the two files will be noted where applicable.
The models referenced by three opponents have been replaced:
- Opponent $1 - SUPRA'96 SZ-R (tsprn) replaced with SUPRA SZ-R (t2srn)
- Opponent $5F - [R]LANCER Evolution V RS (m2r5r) replaced with [R]LANCER Evo.V WRC Ralliart (m2a5r)
- Opponent $63 - [R]IMPREZA'99 PALLY Edition(<span style="cursor:help; border-bottom:thin dotted cornflowerblue;" id="tooltip" title="
The preceding text has been transcribed exactly as presented in the original source ">sic) (s2irr) replaced with [R]IMPREZA RALLY Edition (sipxr)
Four new events have been introduced since the previous available build. DEMO19 is present in both gtmode_data.dat and arcade_data.dat, while three others only appear in the Arcade file.
