nWo Revenge

WCW/nWo Revenge is the second of AKI Corporation's WCW-licensed wrestling games developed for the N64 and the third and final game overall developed by AKI for Ted Turner's rasslin' roughhouse. For after this, some years later AKI would jump ship and develop two games for their Stamford-based enemy, in one of the most prolific defections in the Monday Night Wars. Though the good news is they went out with a bang (no DDP-related pun intended) since Revenge is considered one of the best games on the Nintendo 64 and one of the best pro wrestling games ever made.

Of course, there's unused content to be found here too.

Unused Graphics#

Cage Match#

Hidden among the graphics for the special match types (Handicap Match and Battle Royal) is a Cage Match graphic, in a different style from the other menu items. (Cage Matches would later appear in WWF WrestleMania 2000.)

You can view this graphic in-game via a GameShark code: 810C911E 00A2. It will replace the Handicap Match graphic in the Special Matches menu with the Cage Match graphic.

Alternate Face for Sting#

The intro scene with Sting and the truck uses a different face texture for Sting than is used in-game. Sting's face only flashes on the screen for a few seconds during this cut scene so it is easily missed.

Unused Wrestlers#

The game contains a few unused wrestlers.

"Sting"#

It appears that the fake nWo "Sting" from WCW vs. nWo: World Tour was considered for addition to the game at some point before being canned, likely since that minor angle had run its course. Moveset data for the wrestler can be found. Initially "Sting"s moveset data was thought to just be a duplicate copy of Sting's moveset data, but then some differences in moves were found that correlated to "Sting"s moveset in World Tour. The costume graphics for the character are not present in the game, but present alongside the moveset data is also some height data and body type for "Sting". A head texture for "Sting" is also present. Whereas normal Sting has 3 head variants (classic Surfer Sting, red Wolfpac Crow Sting, white and black Crow Sting), "Sting" only has the standard white and black Crow Sting facepaint, being functionally identical to Sting's head.

Wrath#

Although Bryan "Wrath" Clarke is in the code of this game, he is not playable through normal means. He is mostly complete, but some of his moves are missing sounds or have incorrect animation. In addition, he does not have his own costumes, using one of Sting's for all four slots. Likely kept out of the game due to being benched for injury during 1998 and thus not being that relevant enough to make game-worthy. To unlock everyone, including Wrath, use the GameShark code 8107F07C FFFF. He will be in the WCW 3 section of the character list. He will not be saved automatically, but if you complete any of the titles with him, he will be permanently added to the roster once you play that same title again and defeat him.

Managers#

Several unplayable managers are listed internally in the ROM, with some names misspelled or translated oddly. In most cases, they didn’t make the cut due to either leaving WCW or being taken off TV during the game’s development. They are not actually set up to manage anyone in the game. Two of them crash the game. One is just weird.

Name

Notes

Woman

Nancy Benoit, with "Woman" being her honest-to-god ring name at the time. She hadn’t appeared on TV since May 1997.

Sister Sherri

"Sensational" Sherri Martel, who also left WCW in 1997.

Jackreen

Jacqueline Moore, who left WCW in mid-1998 before moving to the WWF that June.

James Bandenderg

James Vandenberg, aka James Mitchell, Sinister Minister. He was removed from TV in early 1998 after Wrath was injured and his other charge Mortis moved into a storyline with Raven before becoming Kanyon.

Ted Debisas

"Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase, who worked in WCW as the nWo's kayfabe financier, but did little actual ring work at the time. After a run as a face managing The Steiner Brothers, he was taken off TV in early 1998.

RED

Inaccessible, trying to use this character will crash the game.

WHITE

Inaccessible, trying to use this character will crash the game.

DRIVER

Truck driver from the intro? But the actual "DRIVER" character is actually Nancy "Woman" Benoit (AKA an oddly edited Meng model)? Just a quirk of the game.

The following GameShark code will add a new stable called "Cruiserweight 2" and contains all available managers. The character select menu becomes a bit unstable with this stable enabled, and can cause visual glitches and wrestler names and outfits to change.

Unused Moves#

Several unused moves are present in the game though cannot be used without hacking.

Running Grapples#

Some wrestlers in the game have running front and rear grapples set up, but the ability to use those moves has been disabled via wrestler parameters. With a bit of hacking to change parameters, the running grapples can be re-enabled.

Poison Mist Reversal#

Present in the game is a Great Muta poison mist reversal that cannot be chosen without hacking. The mist color is also randomized which is a feature that was ported to Revenge from Virtual Pro-Wrestling 64.

Hidden Detail#

Trucker

Meng

The trucker in the intro sequence uses a version of Meng's face, albeit one that is slightly wider than Meng's face, with a different skin color palette.
