Duke Nukem Forever's animations exist in anims.dat and animsdir.dat in the SkinMeshes directory.
Prerendered Video Animations#
While "technically" seen, many animations used in pre-rendered videos of the game exist unused amongst the other animations in the files. Either leftover due to such sequences being previously rendered real time or more simply unintentionally left in.
Duke Main Menu Idle#
Found in duke_retarget is duke_startscreen_idle.anm, Duke's idle animation from the title screen. (Menu.bik)
Attract/Intro Video#
Animations from the attract/intro video summarizing Duke Nukem 3D exists throughout various folders. Some of them seem to showcase some details not seen in the video. (Attract.bik)
Found in characters/duke_attract.
vid_duke_assault.anm- Seen when Duke is setting in the cinema from Hollywood Holocaust and shoots the Assault Trooper with a shotgun.vid_duke_fieldgoal.anm- Seen when Duke kicks a field goal with the Cycloid Emperor's eye from Stadium. Notably it includes Duke pumping his arms into the air like in the original cinematic in Duke Nukem 3D, a detail not present in the video itself.vid_duke_idle.anm- Seen at the end of the video, duplicate of the main menu animation from above. Found in characters/battelord.
a_death_menu_pose.amn- Seen when Duke executes the Battlelord with the RPG. The filename indicates it was meant to be seen at the main menu. Only a dead Pigcop and Assault Trooper are present there.
TV Programs#
Animations for some of the TV programs seen in the game's first two levels. (Map00_TV.bik/Map01_NewsReport.bik)
Found in characters/aigen_retarget.
a_scr_map00_reporter.anm- The News Reporter from News 17's report about the aliens invading the Vegas strip in Duke Lives.a_scr_map00_reporter01.anm- The News Reporter's second, slightly inaudible story about the aliens.a_scr_map00_reporter_interupt.anmNews 17's report about the aliens at the Duke Burger in Damn! Duke Nukem#
These animations were too wimpy for the king and had their asses kicked to obsolescence. Found in characters/duke_retarget.
Animations for arming the cut Nuclear Warhead ammo for the RPG.
u_nuke_stand_armnuke.amnu_nuke_stand_armnuke_grid3d.amnu_nuke_crouh_armnuke.amnu_nuke_crouh_armnuke_grid3d.amn
An animation of Duke being knocked down. This animation is very similar to the ones when Duke is knocked unconscious after the fights against the Mothership and the Alien Queen, complete with him giving the finger. The filename indicates that it was used for the demo shown at PAX 2010 and meant to have been seen in the Highway Battle: Part 2. It is not known if this ever used in the demo released to the public.

NPCs#
Holsom Twins#
Found in characters/npc_female.
The Twins have earlier versions of their introduction animations in Duke Lives. Mary Holsom's animations are labeled as "twin_brunette" while Kate Holsom's are labelled as "twin_blonde". Their used versions are a_scr_mary_intro.anm and a_scr_kate_intro.anm.
These versions seem to have been used before the current ones were, they can be seen in the internal Triptych Trailer. They are spilt across multiple files rather than being in one.

These were used for the game's appearance at PAX 2010 (and presumably other public showings), as indicated from the filenames. They appear in the 2011 demo at the end of Duke Lives.

There are even some unused animations for Capture The Babe!
mp_ctb_dance.anm- Depicts a Twin gyrating her body around. Likely for being idle or being captured.mp_ctb_stand_idle_03.anm- Depicts a Twin checking their shoes and bending over to tighten one. Meant to have been an idle animation while at base.
General Graves#
Found in characters/general_graves is a single unused animation. It seems that it was meant to have been used as a apart of lip syncing for "L" sounds.
It does not seem to work properly with duke_retarget.skl that Graves (and all humanoid male NPCs use). It does work with duke_attract.skl, suggesting that this was intended for an earlier model.
l_f.anm
Misc. Male NPCs#
Animations used by the game's generic humanoid male NPCs. Found in characters/aigen_retarget.
wounded_idle_scientist_pain1.anm- Likely was intended for a scientist character that was removed from the game. There are two dead ones seen in The Duke Burger: Part 3 and Underground: Part 2 as well as an alive one stuck in a door in the DLC's The Clone Carousel. The 2008 World Chart makes mention of a scientist being encountered in the cut level Agricultural Center, presumably this animation was intended for that level. There is also another animation present in the game, but it is repurposed.ainorm_f_dialouge_jesus.anm- The filename indicates this was meant for dialogue of some kind. Doesn't depict anything outside of a static pose.ainorm_f_dialouge_fooledagain.anm- Ditto.ainorm_a_wound_arm_run_01.anm- Depicts someone with a wounded arm running while looking franticly.ainorm_a_wound_arm_run_02.anm- Depicts someone with a wounded arm and just running.
Misc. Female NPCs#
Animations used by the game's generic female NPCs. Found in characters/npc_female.
A whole bunch of animations for women being carried by some of the game's enemies. scr_jetpack_carry_girl_05.anm is the only used one and is seen for when the Holsom twins are carried away by the Assault Troopers in The Duke Dome: Part 2.

Enemies#
Unused maneuverers from the game's foes that never get seen.
Battlelord#
Found in characters/battlelord.
There exist a bunch of animations for the Battlelord without his gun. The only time he is ever seen without holding it is when he is vulnerable for strength taps. The only one of these that seems to be used is a_noweapon_attack_stomp.anm.
This oddity was seen in a prerelease screenshot.

Assault Trooper#
Found in characters/assaulttrooper''.
a_scr_assault_trooper_top_trailer.anma_scr_assault_trooper_bottom_trailer_outro.anma_asstroop_leggrip.anm- The filename indicates that this was meant to have shown an Assault Trooper meeting a rather grim end with a leg being pulled off.
These are likely tied to the identically named unused female animations from above.

Pigcop#
Found in characters/pigcop.
a_combat_grenade_launcher_fire.anm- An animation intended for Pigcops using the grenade launcher, which they never do in the game.
Assault Commander#
Found in characters/assaultcommander.
a_map07_astr_carry_girl.anm- See the Misc. Female NPCs and Assault Trooper sections. Likely was meant to have shown an Assault Commander carrying women into the Duke Dome.
Octaking#
Found in characters/octaking.
a_act_attack01_bite.anm- Depicts the Octaking chomping down. He never does this to attack the player in either fight against him.
Rat#
a_idle01.anm- A duplicate of one of its idle animations (a_act_idle01.anm).a_invalid.anm- Ditto.
