Oddities

This is a sub-page of Duke Nukem Forever.

Careful, you'll lose an eye.

This page or section needs more images.
There's a whole lotta words here, but not enough pictures. Please fix this.

To do:

  • Other stuff that I (Mantis) haven't gotten around to/bothered adding properly just yet:
    • Early Assault Trooper design seen in warning screens in The Duke Cave. Located in dt_Props/consoles. This design can be seen in some prerelease media
    • The newspapers in smt_skins6/Newspaper have publish dates of April 1st, 2010, the date that DNF was meant to go gold at 3D Realms before development collapsed and is mentioned in the 2008 world chart document.
    • PigCop_ClothRug in dt_MyDigs/props (a used texture) appears to be derived from any early Pigcop texture.
    • The Duke lines DUKE_BorderHelmet_01 and DUKE_TwinsDie_01 are noticeably much lower quality then Duke's other lines.
    • The BulletinDukeConcepts texture features various concept art, including of scrapped elements like Bombshell.
    • Seems like someone forgot to remove some green details from Toy_PigCop.dds.
    • The spec texture of DukePoster3 shows it once had a different design, featuring cropped key art from Duke Nukem: Land of the Babes. Can be seen in the internal Triptych video included with the final game.
    • The Beer Helmet seems to use early textures of the beer item (brownish tan like in the December 2007 teaser).
    • RPG pickup model (SMSH), kill icon and pickup graphic seem to be based on an earlier design. The attract video features this old design.
    • The window/taskbar icon uses the old icon design seen in early builds like the 2001 ones rather than the used one of the exe/Steam icons. Please rip out this early icon and if there's anything else stored in there.
  • Start listing every instance of Skelton's old Duke Model being used (or assets based on it). Also add images of these.
  • Look for any code oddities.

Considering this game, there's likely FAR more oddities and oversights.

Thanks to the unique development of Duke Nukem Forever, many oddities and oversights are present in the game.

Mark Skelton's Duke Design#

An older design of Duke by artist Mark Skelton was used by the game from C. the mid-2000s up until Gearbox replaced it with a model of their own seemingly in 2010. Despite this, many assets seen in the final game still use renders of or are based on this older design.

Instances of this include:

  • The cover of Duke's Why I'm so Great book
  • Many assets from the Duke Burger level (both in multiplayer and singleplayer).
  • The interactable statute used in the puzzle in The Lady Killer: Part 3.
  • Kill icon of Jetpack going haywire (kill_jetpack.dds).

Texture Oddities#

Barcode on General Graves' Face#

General Graves has a (rather smudgy) bar code under his right eye. This detail appears to be left over from earlier builds of the game, where members of the EDF had bar codes on their faces. This idea was abandoned at some point, but Graves' texture doesn't seem to have been updated to account for this change.

Drivable Trucks#

The trucks seen in the "Highway Battle: Part 2" level can in fact be driven. This can only occur if a player skips to the highway with the Holoduke via a glitch or uses console commands.

Not only can the trucks with barrel-throwing Pigcops be driven, but a truck transporting a house can as well.

Audio Oddities#

Voice Lines#

  • The two EDF soldiers that break from the Whiteboard in Duke Lives are shown wearing masks, but their voice lines lack the muffling effect as other lines with masked EDF soldiers.
  • Duke's voice lines when he is shrunken are recorded normally and are simply pitched down in-game. This means that Duke's unique lines that play when he is shrunken can never be heard in-game in their unedited forms.
    • This also applies to Duke and Captain Dylan's voice lines in The Doctor Who Cloned Me.

Lee Jackson Metadata#

Two songs have additional noteworthy metadata about them. They have credits to Lee Jackson, the composer of Duke Nukem 3D and the "Grabbag" theme. The "TV" versions of these songs don't have this metadata. "Fnord!" is Jackson's signature.

The songs are attributed to have been made in 2002, 9 years before the final game would ship as well as the year that Jackson left 3D Realms, and production of the game.

Miscellaneous Asset Oddities#

Texture Loading in Pre-rendered Assets#

Some of the videos used for textures such as the various programs in Duke Lives (Map00_TV.bik), Graves and the President talking to Duke in the Duke Cave (DukeCave_Pres_and_Graves.bik) and the reports by News 17 have rather noticeable texture loading when the characters appear.
