Unused Models

This is a sub-page of Duke Nukem Forever.

Careful, you'll lose an eye.

This page or section needs more images.
There's a whole lotta words here, but not enough pictures. Please fix this.

To do:
Make sure to have Static Mesh model images with their textures (if they have any). Noesis isn't capable of viewing them with textures.

  • Ammo Boxes: Add images with their textures applied.
  • Add image of the Jetpack and compare with the used model.
  • Add these static mesh models:
    • Stuff in sm_geo_decorations/CollisonPrimitivies (verify if unused).
    • golfcart_wheel.smsh in sm_class_vehicles/test
    • Quad1.smsh in TestQuad.
    • Office_Wall_Radius.smsh in sm_geo_decorations/Multiplayer_Rooftops.
    • Seems to be an unused model of Duke's glasses called Dukes_Glasses_OLD.smsh, a duplicate also exists as EyeGlasses. There also seems to be another unused one called Dukes_Glasses_Stock.smsh
    • Stuff in sm_armor/PIGCOP (verify if unused).
    • Diving_Helmet.smsh in sm_geo_decorations/Diving_Helmet. Depicts the helmet of a Big Daddy from Bioshock, seeming was replaced with the Borderlands Psycho head in Blowin' the Dam.
    • DamWall_Map18_Version.smsh in SM_Lvl_Dam/Dam_Unlit.
    • wingedgirl.smsh in SM_Lvl_Dam/statue, depicts a gender bent version of the statues of the Winged Figures of the Republic monument from the Hoover Dam's Monument Plaza. Has textures in smt_skin9/Statue_1.
  • Which version of the gib models are used by the game?

The game's models are stored across meshes.dat in SkinMeshes and StaticMeshDir.dat and StaticMeshes.dat in StaticMeshes.

SkinMeshes Models#

Duke's Mighty Foot#

To do:
Any leftover weapon data for this? Might also be used with the fist in some way with it's visibility disabled.

DNF_Mightyfootmelee.png

A model of a simple box named mightyfoot_melee.msh found in the weapons/mightyfoot_melee directory, suggesting that Duke's signature melee attack was set to return. It's very likely a leftover from earlier versions of the game.

Attract Duke#

DNF-Duke_Attract.png

A textureless model of Duke called duke_attract.msh, found in characters/duke_attract. This is the model used in the intro video summarizing Duke Nukem 3D shown when the player starts up the game or a new singleplayer campaign.

The are also some animations intended for the model from the intro as well.

Test Pyramid#

DNF-Testpyramid.png

Found in hands/testpyramid is a simple pyramid named testpyramid.msh. It has some animations.

StaticMeshes Models#

Test Models#

DNF_Allprimitives.png

A few test models are present in the files in sm_lighttestbed/primitives. A file called allprimitives.smsh contains multiple models in one, but some of the models do have their own separate files.

The other files are as follows:

  • Cube.smsh
  • holsomtwins.smsh - Despite the name, depicts only one twin.
  • rectangle.smsh
  • teapot.smsh
  • test_cylinder.smsh
  • test_cylinder_spec_black.smsh
  • test_cylinder_spec_grey.smsh
  • test_cylinder_spec_grey_nrm.smsh
  • test_cylinder_spec_grey_nrm_rim.smsh
  • test_cylinder_spec_white.smsh
  • sphere.smsh

Ammo Boxes#

A whole bunch of models for ammo pickups that aren't used can be found in sm_class_dukeitems across various sub-folders, seemingly replaced with EDF ammo crates and taking ammo from dropped weapons. Even the unused Nuke weapon has its own model.

The only one of these models used by the game is Pistol_AmmoPickup.smsh, which appears in The Duke Cave and My Digs.

  • Freezer_ammo.smsh
  • Shotgun_ammo.smsh
  • Devastator_Ammo.smsh
  • RPG_Ammo.smsh
  • Ripper_Ammo.smsh
  • Railgun_AmmoPickup.smsh
  • Shrinkray_Ammo.smsh
  • Nuke_Ammo.smsh

Old Jetpack Design#

An unused model of the Jetpack known as Jetpack.smsh can be found at sm_class_duekitems/Defualt. This old design is more akin to the jetpack's appearance in Duke Nukem 3D then the final game's.

Capture The Babe#

Present in SM_Multiplayer/CTB is a few unused models for the Capture The Babe mode. The "gogo" mentioned here refers to Go-go_dancing.

  • CTB_GogoBall_B.smsh - A disco ball likely intended for the cage seen below. The filename indicates this was for the Blue Team.
  • CTB_GogoBall_R.smsh - Ditto, but for Red Team instead.
  • gogo_cage1.smsh - A simple cage. Seems like the Twins were meant to have been housed in these rather than the platforms they are in the final game. There is also gogo_cage2.smsh and gogo_cage3.smsh but they are just duplicates.

Unused Gib Models#

There are various models of gibs for characters that are never shown to gib found in sm_class_effects in StaticMeshes.dat and in gibs across various directories in meshes.dat.

Johnny O'Lenoman#

Found in Host_Gibs.

  • Host_Head_Gib.smsh
  • Host_ForearmL.smsh / host_arm_gib_l.msh
  • Host_ForarmR.smsh / host_arm_gib_r.msh
  • Host_FootL.smsh / host_leg_gib_l.msh
  • Host_FootR.smsh / host_leg_gib_r.msh

General Graves#

Found in Graves_Gibs.

  • General_Graves_head_Gib.smsh
  • General_Graves_ForerarmL_Gib.smsh / general_graves_arm_gib_l.msh
  • General_Graves_ForerarmR_Gib.smsh / general_graves_arm_gib_r.msh
  • General_Graves_FootL_Gib01.smsh / general_graves_arm_gib_l.msh
  • General_Graves_FootL_Gib.smsh / general_graves_leg_gib_r.msh - The Static Mesh version is actually his right leg.

Removed Models#

To do:
Likely more. Theres also models with different directories/model names that could probably be documented.

Precache text files for static meshes in the precacheindex/staticmeshes/ directory of the PlayStation 3 version make reference to removed models from the game.

dm-rooftops.staticmeshes.txt#

Models meant for the cut Chugfest game mode. The textures for these models still exist in the files.
