This page is loooong... |
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is the last of the futuristic Call of Duty games and was the first game in the series to launch without a campaign, instead shipping a new "Blackout" Battle Royale and additional Zombies and Multiplayer content.
It has quite a lot of cut content, as the game went through a troubled development cycle, involving changing the time period from being a Black Ops III sequel to a prequel set in the 2040s.
Career#
Career is the cancelled "Campaign" mode for Black Ops 4. It was a 2v2 narrative mode that revolved around 2 factions fighting for objectives over several missions to ultimately win a war. Set after the events of Black Ops III, the Career experience was unique for its dynamically changing story based on previous mission outcomes, and focus on open ended combat scenarios (including vehicles!). Many remnants of the mode can still be found despite being cancelled.

FPA |
The Free Peoples Army (FPA) is a grassroots insurgency formed to oppose to the Unions expansion and policy of taking resources from poor countries to enrich their own. Founded by international philanthropist Gabriel Ford, the FPA pits their indomitable spirit against the Union war machine. Even with Ford locked up in a Union prison, the FPA fights on for the common man. |

UNION |
Rising from the ashes of the Year of Chaos, the Union forged the crumbling armies of the Winslow Accord and Common Defense Pact into the single largest government on Earth. The Union is dedicated to economic recovery, protecting trade routes and developing a cure for the global infertility crisis. Having saved western civilization, the Union is seen by many as the last best hope for a brighter tomorrow. |

Based on alpha information, this character was originally called "Sawyer" and was meant to be the FPA Handler. |
Gadgets#
Career had unique Gadgets on a cooldown with 3 being equipped at once. They were activated with the D-pad on console, as the DVAR for switching to this gameplay function still exists. The icon for one Gadget called Disruptor still remains.
Difficulty#
Per previous Campaigns, you could select and modify the difficulty of your Career. The difficulties were Recruit, Regular, Hardened, Veteran and Heroic. It's unclear what the "Heroic" mission difficulty is meant to be.

Specialist HQ#
Specialist HQ is a tutorial mode featured in Black Ops 4. It includes a Tutorial and Onboarding mission for the 10 launch Specialists. The mode seems to have changed several times during development, with many iterations of "Onboarding" levels being created.

Onboarding Missions#
While "Onboarding" still technically exists in the form of Training experiences narrated by Frank Woods, the original design was far different. Onboarding was designed to be a campaign-style mini tutorial played by a select Specialist through various scenarios utilizing your special equipment. An early prototype of this mission format created by Drew Goheen of Raven Software was uploaded online, featuring Ajax attempting to "Rescue the Aquilus CEO" on the map Seaside.1

Multiplayer#
Multiplayer in BO4 is a team-tactical 5v5/6v6 experience focused around Specialist characters. Initially developed as an Overwatch-esque hero shooter with ambitious new mechanics, before being slapped down by playtesters and then reformed into something "COD-like" at the final hours. Most of the unused code is from the original version of the game.

Loadouts#
Create-a-Class was originally called "Loadouts" and functioned differently. Instead of creating universal classes, you had to customize individual Specialists. What you could equip was: a Primary and Secondary Weapon with X5 Attachments each, 1 Gear and 1 Equipment. During the reworking of Multiplayer, this system was canned entirely, and replaced with Pick 10 alongside the return of Perks and Wildcards.
High Value Operative#
HVO (High Value Operative) is a cancelled system with many unused graphics. There were 3 categories of recognition including Killer, MVP and Sharpshooter. Based on a player's performance with a Specialist, they would be recognized with one of these categories.

Equipment#
Per the original "Loadout" system, equipment was tied to individual Specialists; for example, only Ruin could equip the Grapple Gun. This means that when Loadouts were cancelled for traditional shared Create-a-Class with Pick 10, tons of unique equipment was also cut. Some of these are likely Specialist Weapons or Ultimates, as "equipment" and "ability" are used for both.

Forward Spawns#
Forward Spawns are a cancelled gameplay systemm. Per unused descriptions, Specialists assigned with the Support role could construct Forward Spawns on predefined locations. Just like the Tac-Deploy Beacon, Forward Spawns could be destroyed, however both teams would fight to have ownership of a Forward Spawn. Hence the focus on "Selecting your spawn point" on respawn.
Kill Streak Multiplier#
Score notifications for "Kill Streak X2" through to "Kill Streak X30" remain, meaning that going on a Killstreak would give an increasing score multiplayer. Ending an enemies Killstreak would also give additional score. A similar feature was implemented into 2020's Black Ops Cold War.

Factions#
Factions is a cancelled system that was themed around the Chaos storyline and meant to provide daily and seasonal rewards. Players could side with four different narrative factions: Bloodfaith, Tempus Novi, Dustborn or The First Legion. The Factions experience included a Callings challenge system, collectible Artifacts and unlockable Faction Helmets.
Callings#
Callings were split into Daily and Seasonal Tasks. While a "Daily Calling" was added in Operation: Absolute Zero, alongside a Halloween and Winter event, the actual full system was never implemented and was effectively replaced by Contracts in Operation: Spectre Rising. The Calling Card "All the Facts" with the description "Complete all Factions in Faction Callings Season 1" was replaced by the Calling Card "One of Us".

Calling Artifacts#
Calling Artifacts were collectible items in the world that could be viewed in the game menu alongside a description, similar to the Intel system introduced in Black Ops Cold War Zombies. There are 52 remaining models for the Artifacts tied to each Faction.

Faction Helmets#
Faction Helmets are a cancelled feature for Factions. It's unknown how they would've been earned, but each Faction had a "Helmet" which players could equip for gamepaly bonuses. The script for Faction Helmets still exists. Three of the Faction Helmets can be seen fully rendered in portfolio posts.23

Oddities#
Specialist HQ#
- In Specialist HQ, the Mantis will always explode into debris of the Cebereus from Black Ops III. This seperation is caused due to the "Mantis" in Specialist HQ having a unique version for the mode.
Multiplayer#
- The Specialist Ruin has bugged decals on his model. In pre-release builds and Specialist HQ cutscenes, Ruin has two decals on his front magazine pouches; one is his "Ram" insignia, the other being a skull. Despite being present on the model, and being included both in the Multiplayer Beta and in-game materials, the decals never shown in-game.
Zombies#
- The Mini Turret Equipment in Zombies uses an incorrect inventory icon, instead using the scrapped "Ultimate" Mini Turret icon from Multiplayer. This is strange, as a proper icon does exist and is used in both the Loadout and Equipment menus.
