A demo version of Bust-A-Move 2: Arcade Edition was released on Acclaim's website.

The files date from the demo are earlier than in the final game.

General Differences#

  • The demo version doesn't require a game CD to be inserted for playing, unlike in the final game and there is no music, however with that CD inserted, the Red Book Audio music will play just like in the final game.
  • Sound effects are slightly crisper than in the final game.
  • The demo version only features Puzzle Mode.
  • There are no gameplay demos and cutsecnes unlike in the final game.
  • You can't do settings such as changing the volumes of music or sound.

Puzzle Mode#

Demo

Final

There are only 6 stages featured, one path, with 2 levels each stage, 12 levels in total in this demo, while in the final game featuring 27 stages, multiple paths to choose, with 5 levels each stage, 135 levels in total in Bust-A-Move 2 mode, Bust-A-Move 2X mode normal and hard level each level sets, if combining between Bust-A-Move 2 and Busta-A-Move 2X two difficulty levels sets together, as well as additional 5 levels from practice level set from the Bust-A-Move 2X mode, there will be 410 levels in total.

Due to the level changes, the map is shorter than in the final game.

Staff Roll#

In the demo version, the staff roll background is orange tiles with Bub playing computer from the ending after clearing stage V in the original version with texts saying "Congratulations, Demo Completed." while in the final game, the staff roll background is black with fireworks explosions resembling characters.

Graphic Differences#

Demo

Final

In the demo version, the Acclaim logo is pixel-based seen in many of SNES and Genesis games as well as early PS1 and Saturn games but compressed.

Title Screen#

Demo

Final

The background and title logo are original colors unlike in the final game which is dark, in additional to demo subtitle, Bub and Bob are added between of this word, the copyright disclaimer fonts are also different as well, and dated 1995 (referring to original arcade version release date) rather than 1996 in the final game, the Taito logo has slightly shading as well.

Game Over#

Demo

Final

The game over screen is directly taken from the original arcade version but slightly edited and unanimated, while in the final game this screen is taken from the original arcade version with animation as well but stretched.

End-of-Demo#

Demo

Final

In the demo version when quitting the game, this message appears, in the final game this message still exists but with more changes such as added Bub here, but unused.

Hidden Texts#

Located at 0x6F20C from bm2.exe, this was likely meant to display copyright disclaimer at boot up just like in the final game, since the demo version boots directly to Acclaim logo.
