Ricochet

Ricochet is the undeserved black sheep of Valve's games and their first foray into quirky FPS games, which eventually led to Portal and Portal 2.

Unused Models#

Female Player#

Alongside the only other player model in the game, there exists a female version. This model is virtually complete, but does not support color changing, and lacks a unique decapitated head gib.

Curiously, this model features 3 skin groups with alternate pant textures.

Disc Viewmodel#

hldayone_grenade.png

The disc thrown by the player has a "viewmodel" that is never seen in-game. It can be enabled via the console command "r_drawviewmodel 1" or by inspecting it through a model viewer. Enabling it reveals it to be a copy of the Half-Life grenade.

Unused Powerups#

There are models for two unused powers, "curve" and "visual". When opened up in a model viewer, the powerups are the soccer ball and present models from Team Fortress Classic, respectively.

Curve#

This powerup only has a model, and has no mention in the code. When opened up in a model viewer, it uses the soccer ball from Team Fortress Classic.

Visual#

This page or section needs more videos.
There's a whole lotta words or pictures here, but not enough videos. Please fix this.
Specifically: Footage of this working in-game? SDK has its code, but won't appear randomly.

This powerup would've shown players the trajectory of their discs using beams. This powerup appears to be largely finished in the code, but was left out of the powerup list and cannot appear normally.

When opened up in a model viewer, it uses one of the present models from Team Fortress Classic.

Unused Animations#

Dummied animations#

These animations were replaced with the idle animation.

  • dummy1 (Sequence #0)
  • jump (Sequence #1)
  • jumpl (Sequence #2)
  • turnL (Sequence #6)
  • turnR (Sequence #7)

Deaths#

There are two additional death animations, falling forwards and backwards. Players always use a single animation when decapitated, regardless of where they were standing, falling or the direction of the attack.

  • fall_die_forward (Sequence #37)
  • fall_die_back (Sequence #38)

Female#

Careful, you'll lose an eye.

Specifically: Gifs for these animations are pending.

Interestingly, the unused female model has two of the dummied animations still present, both of which are also unused.

  • turnL (Sequence #4)
  • turnR (Sequence #5)

Unused Graphics#

A majority of ricochet.wad goes unused.

Tool Textures#

Textures used internally by the map editor, which all remain invisible.

Unused Sound Effects#

This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: This sound works if you have the Power Shot powerup and if your disc is any color except red or perhaps if you're not alone in a server. Did Valve do this intentionally? If so, remove this sound from the section.

rocket1.wav, present in the weapons sound folder. It tries to play whenever you use your secondary attack. altfire.wav is a replacement to rocket1.wav

Revisional Differences#

Specifically: Comparisons are missing. As well as 25th Anniversary changes.

Ricochet's Steam release received the same menu layout changes that other GoldSource games did.

Console#

And once again, the console window was given an update much like the other GoldSource Steam ports.
