Colin McRae Rally is the one that started it all, the first in the Colin McRae Rally (later DiRT) series.
Sub-Pages#
Unused Video#
- The latest European and Italian re-releases contain INTRO2.STR, which is a duplicate of INTRO.STR, the opening movie.
Hidden Developers Comments#
- Executables from CMRALLY directory contain some developer comments (one of them is a bit vulgar)
FONTS - WHAT A WASTE OF MEMORY!!!
OH SHIT - CRAPPED OVER THE HEAP!!!
Revisional Differences#
- Both European and Italian releases have multiple revisions. While the European version had three revisions, the Italian version got only two.
Revision 1#
- Here is described only European re-release, since its Italian counterpart has same changes.
- This revision was compiled on November 20, 1998 and all executables also share this date.
- This re-release is also known as Platinum.
Cars#
- Textures for the Ford Escort WRC and Renault Maxi Megane were modified.
- The Ford Escort WRC lacks Valvoline decal in some places (this difference could be seen only in gameplay, as the texture used in menus isn't affected).

Frontend#
- Changes in FRONTEND.EXE:
The executable from Original release had strings related to multiplayer (probably leftovers from the PC version):
NETWORK (HOST)
NETWORK (JOIN)
- In the controller setup screen, Analog and Analog Setup were changed to Analogue and Analogue Setup.
Modified Track Maps#
- Some track maps were changed (which stored in .loa files).

Mixed up Indonesia Maps#
- In original release some maps of Indonesia stages were mixed up (except Stage 1). This issue was fixed in Rev 1.
- Stage 2 shows on loading screen map for Stage 6.
- Stage 3 shows wrong map both times: unknown map (which is used in original release as map for Stage 5) in car setup menu and Stage 5 map on loading screen
- Stage 4 shows both in car setup and loading screen map for Stage 3. Actual Stage 4 map from Rev 1 isn't seen in original release.
- Stage 5 shows on loading screen some unknown map, which isn't presented in later re-releases.
- Stage 6 shows on loading screen map for Stage 2.

Anti-piracy warning#
- This revision (and later revisions) removed the anti-piracy warning screen, which was displayed before the Codemasters copyright screen in the original version.
Revision 2#
- This revision has no counterpart for Italy.
- This revision was compiled on June 12, 2000 and all executables in CMRALLY directory are dated June 8, 2000. This re-release is also known as Value Series.
- Monte Carlo renamed to Austria. This change could be seen in CMRALLY/GAME/X/GAME.TXT (X=directories for EFGS languages).
Also directories with files for that country changed their name from Monaco to Austri.
- To go along with this change, the stages were renamed:
- Stage 1: Charols to Seefeld
- Stage 2: Pradelle to Kufstein
- Stage 3: Serres to Gerlos
- Stage 4: Sisteron to Goeriach
- Stage 5: Riez to Mist
- Stage 6: Broves to Rauris
- The start flag had its Monte Carlo text removed.

- Welcome loading screens and rally logos for other countries were also updated - now they show the year 2000 instead of 1998. The oversight where Indonesia is shown as round 6 instead of round 7 there was not fixed, however.

Revision 3#
- The 2nd Italian re-release contains the same changes from 2nd and 3rd European re-releases.
- This revision was compiled on April 11, 2001 and all executables in the CMRALLY directory are dated April 9, 2001.
- This re-release is also known as Bestsellers.
Frontend#
- This revision uses a shortened version of the intro, which contains only last 5 seconds of video with worse audio.
- Sound effects in main menu are no longer played.
Subaru Impreza changes#
- The car's name was changed from Subaru Impreza WRC to Subaru Impreza 22B.
- The car's textures were altered to strip it of its WRC livery.
These changes probably were made due to licensing conflicts with the WRC. Later revisions of Colin McRae Rally 2.0 replaced the Subaru Impreza livery with Toshi Arai's car for related reasons, and games that were not part of the official World Rally Championship video game series, other than Shox and the Gran Turismo series, did not feature official Subaru World Rally Team liveries for few years after Revision 3 was compiled.

- The Lancia Delta Integrale skin has Martini references (that are substituted with Michelin for alcohol censorship reasons) on the rear spoiler and rear quarter of the car removed, possibly for being too suggestive. (In most other games featuring the car, "Lancia Racing" is typically used instead.)

Localization#
Japanese version#
- The Japanese release was only partially localized. All things, except audio for Rally School videos, remain in English and language can't be changed in settings. This release also still has files for Spanish localization.
US version#
- GAME.TXT (located in CMRALLY/GAME/ENGLISH) has some words changed to their American English counterparts, along with a fixed typo ("tendancy" to "tendency")

Drivers#

This needs some investigation. |
- The US version replaces the real-life WRC drivers' names with fictional ones, except for McRae himself. ("K. Backlund" is a stand-in for Tommi Mäkinen, who had his own video game.)
