This page details one or more prototype versions of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 (PlayStation 2).

July 3, 2002#

This prototype is documented on Hidden Palace.

General Differences#

  • Compiled a month before the final build.
  • Uses a black box intro as placeholder.
  • Save file has different name: BASLUS-20362NFS6, while final name is BASLUS-20362HP2.
  • Car unlocks use a different amount of NFS points. Unlocking cars require a couple million points more than in the final release.
  • Dash models for all Ferrari cars still exist in this build and can be accessed in event 31 (Ferrari F50 in Championship and Ferrari 550 Barchetta in Ultimate racer) and event 32 (Ferrari 360 Spider) with a completely locked camera cockpit. In the final release, only event 31 can change the camera perspective. Also there is a unused dash model for Ferrari 360 Modena.
  • Outback track has a slightly different skybox.
  • The final build shows a loading screen before and after the cinematic, while the prototype does it only before the video. The loading screen in the prototype is almost the same version of the loading screen that is used by the final build before the cinematic.

Final

The only differences are that there is a copyright text at the bottom of the screen and that the "Loading" text was slightly moved to the left in the final.

  • When opening this menu, it has the title DEBUG.not pretty and gives the player 10 options:
  • Finish in Nth position (where N=0-8) - instant finishes the race with the selected position.
  • Speedline mode - seemingly doesn't do anything.
  • Car-to-car collisions - enabled by default. Disabling this feature doesn't show any changes.
  • Screen Print - disabled by default. Possibly makes a screenshot of game.
  • Environment - has only the value

. Seemingly doesn't do anything. Might be hinting at a scrapped feature.

  • removed - Removed "Track map" feature (Found in alpha 98).
  • Rearview Mirror - enabled by default. Does the exact same thing as the settings from "Options/Display".
  • ENV MAPPING - enabled by default, disabling it breaks reflections.
  • Show debug info - disabled by default, when enabled shows FPS counter, coordinates of the player on the map and driven distance.
  • Load All Languages (press X) - seemingly doesn't do anything.
