This page details one or more prototype versions of Dead or Alive 3.

To do:

  • Get some asset rips and images here.
  • Demos released on magazines.

For example, european demo logically do not have the Booster disk option on the main menu, european demo disc 3 (may 2002) have a different doa3.png and xbe is doa3demo.xbe instead doa3b.xbe.

This prototype is documented on Hidden Palace.

To do:
Needs verification but there might be unused costumes.

A build sourced from an Xbox Dev Kit released on May 29th, 2020 by ObscureGamers user ngrst183.

General Differences#

Movies#

  • Placeholder texture for Hitomi and Leon's (not Bayman's) movies
    • Grey background with MOV_KOR and MOV_BAY respectively.

DOA3proto_MOV_KOR.png DOA3proto_MOV_BAY.png

    • When beating the game as Hitomi, there will be a short video with Japanese written on it; with "now making........" under it and finally under it to the right: insted [sic] of Hitomi movie. Those appear one after the other. Leon's (not Bayman's, this stranger than usual codename shenanigan is Dead or Alive 2's fault) movie seems to just be missing the menu icon.

Characters, Stages and Costumes#

  • Beach (evening) and Beach (normal) switched place on the selection screen (meaning you need to do Up to use normal beach stage instead of the opposite).
  • X octagon has a much more blue-ish fog.
    • the crowd is also more visible compared to the final version.

Retail

  • In the game, every character has a .xpr containing said character's name and the icon for the character's favorite object for survival in two separate texture, it didn't change with retail for any characters except for one...

... Omega, as it have Kasumi's portrait instead of Ayane's purple butterfly.

Retail

  • Omega's weaponless hand (the one which he shoot both lightings and flames) has a ball without texture, on the other hand (both literally and figuratively) his tokkosho don't seem to have big differences with retail.
    • Note : the ball doesn't exist when seeing the model in GreedXplorer.

Soundtest#

  • Home Tonight by Aerosmith doesn't seem to be in the sound test but it is in bgm.afs though .
  • Xray and Amazing have swapped place.
  • The sound test has a # before the number.

Training Mode#

Exercise#

  • Doing the attacks (the rest of the categories seems to work normally) in exercise sometime make the computer level 8 making much harder than it already is.
  • Sometimes, in exercise mode, the wrong input will be shown.
  • Exercise is called Command mode.

Other#

  • Nicknames from release version are detected and usable.
  • Character select don't seem to have a background yet.
  • Tag Battle has a different icon in Option, the main menu is the retail version.
  • Also, the prototype use Xbox Controller Duke oval icons and manage to have misaligned square icons.
  • In the file is a texture with INITIALIZING DOA3 ENGINES. The previous game (Dead or Alive 2) have INITIALIZING DOA 2 ENGINES during loading screens.
    • This indicate that the developers might have wanted to bring back this during loading screens before abandoning it.

Booster disk demo.
When comparing the demo with the booster disk present on Official Xbox Magazine n°7 by using winmerge, the only difference is in the .xbe .
The certificate's timestamps seems different, a demo destined to another magazine than OXM 7 perhaps?
