This needs some investigation. |
Hero/Partner#
An unused up-facing variant of the pose animation. Explorers of Time, Darkness and Sky would eventually use most of these animations, although Pikachu and Eevee's variations would be partially redrawn.
The outstretched arms, sweat droplets and squinted eyes suggest this animation's intended use may have been for pushing a heavy object in a cutscene. Notably, the quadrupedal Pokémon appear to be standing on their hind legs.
A strange, static animation with an unknown purpose.
A single sprite of Cubone sleeping without its bone, found next to its used sleeping sprites. No animation data appears to be associated with it.
Non-Selectable Partners#
Some animations are used only by the partner in specific main story cutscenes. Meowth, Psyduck, Machop, Cubone, Eevee, and Skitty cannot be selected as the partner, leaving their variations unused. Partner modifier codes will allow these animations to function as normal in-game, alongside the portraits that were left unused for the same reason.
The partner looking down the cliff at Mt. Steel.
The partner taking a deep breath, after meeting Ninetales at Mt. Freeze. Curiously, one of Eevee's sprites is used in Blue Rescue Team only when receiving a reward through the Unknown Dungeon, the game's early equivalent of StreetPass. This may have been a mistake, as every other hero candidate shown in the background is posing.
The partner walking across clouds at Sky Tower's entrance. A unique right-facing variant was additionally made for Cubone, but the partner only faces left while using this animation.
Charizard#
An unused pose animation. Since Tyranitar has a similarly unused pose animation, this would almost certainly have been intended for Team A.C.T.'s Charizard.
Charizard fainting from a standing position. In-game, Charizard faints from a crouching position during the second Western Cave cutscene, using a very similar animation.
Blastoise#
Blastoise either falling over or firing his cannons.
Blastoise panting in exhaustion. Rescue Team DX would end up adding a similar animation to its version of the first Western Cave cutscene.
Alakazam#
Alakazam performing some kind of move.
Alakazam doing... something. It might have been intended for use in conjunction with Charizard and Tyranitar's unused pose animations.
Magnemite#
Magnemite falling over. The Magnemite that are saved at Thunderwave Cave are found stuck together instead.
Gengar#
Gengar apparently struggling.
Xatu#
Xatu looking up, using a unique sprite. Xatu only ever uses the default up-facing sprite for this purpose.
Tyranitar#
Another unused pose animation.
Shiftry#
Yet another unused pose animation.
Latios#
Latios seemingly wincing in pain. The starting pose matches the scene where the injured Latios gets questioned by Alakazam in Pokémon Square, which is likely to be where this animation was intended to be used.
Jirachi#
Jirachi encased inside its crystal shell from the sixth Pokémon movie, Jirachi: Wish Maker, likely meant for a boss cutscene. It uses a different color palette compared to Jirachi's other sprites.
Jirachi emerging from the crystal. Unusually, this animation switches between color palettes. In-game, Jirachi instead enters the boss floor by crashing through the ceiling.
Munchlax#
Munchlax cannot be recruited or fought and is only seen during two rare Pokémon Square events, continually walking to the left. Through Pokémon modifier codes, it is possible to see more of its animations in-game.
Munchlax sleeping. This animation is intended for use within dungeons, and for sleeping inside the Team Base.
Munchlax getting hit, as would similarly be used within dungeons.
Munchlax seemingly holding a gifted food item.
An unused down-facing variant of Munchlax tripping. Unlike the used side-facing variant, this lacks an accompanying "get up" animation.
