|
To do: |
A build date is present at 0x1FA4c for the US version and 0x1F6AA8 for the JPN version.
US:
Oct 17 2002 18:56:23
JPN:
Oct 24 2002 12:04:55
The file FXMap.dbg contains a "release" date
// Output date: Tuesday, October 08, 2002 - 16:22:54
The title screen has also a secret screen to show the build date, nearly identical.
Deleted Files#
harryskin.geo#
The execution roots of the game refer to two files named "harryskin.geo" and "harryskin.gdt" which is never executed and no longer exists in the game or any version of it. At one point the game could have originally run the Harry model on this file and run these animations on the used file "harry.geo" as it is with the prefects with "MalePrefect.geo" and "MalePrefectSkin.geo".
Inventory Font Korea#
Unused Portraits#
Pre Library Portraits#
In the unused level presented above, lie in those corridors, portraits of a bunch of Wizards that include the actor who played Dumbledore from the first movie, unseen anywhere in the game. Their names are included in the file name; they could be Harry Potter characters or people from the developers' family. Some of it can be seen in multiple places in pre-released media.

Grand Staircase#
Some landing of the Grand Staircase landing has an extra portrait that is not set to be anywhere.
According to the texture name, this wizard name is "Nuttah"
Interestingly, it's also named "Pingportrait" as an object and has an animation for being shoot at with flipendo, it seems you could have farm beans with paintings as well!
The first landing during nighttime, has an extra portrait, never seen anywhere.
It's actually overlaying another portrait making it use but unseen.
The painting is called "HD2", it is unknown who is it, if it's a paint from the developer or a scrapped painting from EA.
Unused Animations#
|
|
To do: |
Harry#
Harry has one unused idle animation vairent, its named "idle_i" where he stands his left leg back and tap his right foot. His wizard robe rigs seem to break during it.
The intro cutscene of the Avifor Challenge reused this animation with the robe fixed.

A curious animation named "FREEFALL" from the entry "deathdrop", this was intended probably to be used when harry fall off from a very high height, but the animation "FALL" is used all the time.

Three raw animation called "LOG_WALK" are found that don't have entries in the game code, of what it seems to be Harry keeping in balance on a "log".
Note that the cape is not animated on the first animation but are in the last two.

Malfoy#
Drago Malfoy, just like any other young student at Hogwarts in this game, execute their animations from "MalePupil" file.
However, Malfoy seem to have animations stored in his own model file. meant for open door, go through crawl space, duel... etc
We can't be sure if they were meant to be played on a cutscene or if Malfoy was playable in some way.
Watch on YouTube
Tom the Barman#
Tom has a whole range of animations that are not used.
He has two unused versions of himself to talk to Harry, which is pretty much the same as in game, but he waves his hand while talking.
He also has animations for talking to someone, although he doesn't talk to anyone, he could be seen talking to Hagrid in some pre-release screenshots.
Mulpeppers Apothicary's seller#
This magnificent looking lad has couple animations for discussing, do some stuff and walking as well.
One of those is use on an unused cutscene and perhaps the others should have been used there too, or he could have even been planned to do much more.

Empty Animation Entries#
Some data entries for Harry's animation were dummied out from their content and are now empty and unfunctional
Entry |
Note |
|---|---|
idle_c idle_d |
idle animation start to A and go up to J, C and D however, doesn't not have animation in it. their corresponding animation can be found in the xbox dev kit prototype, under the name "IDLE_LEGPA" and "IDLE_LOOKAROUND". |
danger_run |
Harry has a "danger mode" where his normal idle animation is replaced by animation of Harry looking around suspiciously (used in Dungeon, Borgin Burkle...), even though "danger_walk" exists and used, it seems Harry once had an animation for running with the mode on. |
run_into_wall |
Harry was once supposed to have an animation for hitting a wall. In the game, you can indefinitely run to walls. however, the animation can be seen used during the E3 2002 demo, it seems to be the very same animation of Harry releasing the Gryffindor sword power, it was probably repurposed for it. |

Chocolat frog once had wizard card with them, in the E3 2002 demo, you can harry pick up a card out of the frog, but it seems that there was an animation to pick the edible animal up. |
pickup_frog_idle |
same things but idle, maybe could have end with an output. |

Chest Shine#
some of the object in chests listed just above are set to have a animated shine effect and particle from the Hedwig perch. The effect does not dissepear even when the object collected
The Borgin and Burkes level have that effect loaded but most levels don't.
A similar effect will be reused for opening large chests in Harry Potter Philosopher's stone on 6th gen console

Potion Vial#
The 3 potion vials can be assigned to X, Y and B via memory modification. It is normally impossible to do this and it would have no effect under any circumstances, but at some point in development you could have drunk the Wiggenweld potion by yourself rather than having it done automatically.
Hogwarts Flags#
Flags on top of each tower of the Hogward Castle are red, but it can be configured in memory to change the texture to yellow, blue, green or black.
These colors are used in the Quidditch Pitch.

Quidditch Class numeric timer#
Time Left %d:%d
The timer of Madam Hooch's exam is represented by a clock graphic, however the game code has a timer in minutes and seconds that would have been displayed.
Incendio in Duel#
Although the Standard Book of Spells (Grade 2) states that the Incendio spell may be used for Duelling, the player is never given the chance to do so. Gargoyles can only be defeated by reflecting their attacks, and the duels with Malfoy and Goyle take place during Day 2 and Night 2 - two days before the Incendio challenge. However, if you load one of the two dueling levels after the challenge using hacks, or use cheats to gain all the spells before one of them takes place, you are actually able to fight Malfoy and Goyle using the Incendio charm. They will reflect the spell back at the player with Expelliarmus just as they would with Flipendo. When an opponent is properly hit with Incendio, it also deducts a point from their total. Other spells gained after the duels, such as Alohomora and Avifors, won't do anything when used.
An unmentioned feature of the Expelliarmus spell is whenever the player reflects attacks back at enemies, the analog stick can be used to steer the spell in any desired direction before letting go of the casting button.
Unused Duelist#
Named "DuelPupil", they are indeed pupils that duel you, using their highest models quality never seen in game. Unused audio dialogue found in the Library files indicated they should have been fight there rather then Goyle.
Unused Objects#
Unknown Potion#
UNKNOW POTION !
As with "UNKNOWN SPELL", this line can be found among the names of spells in the inventory. It's probably a placeholder from development, or a fallback in case the game does not recognize a potion. However, in the final game, the Wiggenweld potion is the only potion in the game.
Unused Textures#
Debug Font#
Text font use by any debug feature of the game. The texture is call "acorn_font" because it is the text font from the RISC OS by Acorn Computers
(Source: Dev on discord)
Dumbledore's Office Maps#
Two map textures for Dumbledore's office exist, but go unused since the office is impossible to enter by normal means.

Quidditch Stadium Map#
The Quidditch Stadium also has a map in the inventory that goes unused, as the player only visits the stadium while on a broom, and the inventory is inaccessible during a match or training.
Ron#
Found in Test_DP, it seems to be a very compressed poster of Ron Weasley that is just called "ron". It is unknown what was the point of this picture.
Tom The Barman#
Tom the Leaky Cauldron bartender has a temporary texture made up of some colour palette is found with Tom's model but is never used. It must have been used in the development process before his final texture was finalised.
Tapestry#
The game has a fabulous dark blue tapestry called "DemoTapestry" which is technically present and loaded in the Pink Room but never appears. There is Diffindo-ripped version of this tapestry too.
Early inventory screenshot#
Found in the unused Quidditch Screen. A screenshot of the inventory, Quidditch results can be found, the inventory was originally much lighter and coloured with gold. An identical design can be found in screenshots of the PS2 version.
Early Washing Machin Icon#
The final icon of the washing machine has a different outline and a different "pose".
Early title Screen Graphics#
The unused Quidditch Screen, as seen more below, allowed early development graphics to survive. The Burrow and The Expelliarmus Challenge were playable levels at E3 2002; it is possible they were made for a playable demo.
The golden line is a loading bar, it seems to be the same as that in the PS2 version.
Quidditch HUD#
The HUD would initially have shown Harry's, the Snitch's and the opposing Seeker's positions.
This one is name "QD_HUD_boostfull", the HUD would visually indicate when the broom boost is available.
Test Texture#
Some classic test textures that can never be seen.
Early title#
Found in the unused Quidditch Screen. A simple logo, very small and very compressed under a blue background.
Unused Cutscenes#
The Burrow#
Almost every cutscene are loaded from a file called "CS_BU" however, it exist a standalone file for each cutscenes from earlier devlopement.
The dialogue are not different but even tho some unused line get to be used there, camera shots and, animation especially.
Interesstingly, the washing machine defeat cutscene happen on the house yard rather the barn yard.
Watch on YouTube
Chocolate Frog#
The cutscene takes place in the barnyard, on the corpse of this chocolate toad. Harry would have originally gotten the Wizard Cards from Chocolate Frogs as he understood it, rather than from the chests. The Card doesn't spin like this in the game nor does it fully follow Harry's movement, because his pickup animation was different at the time this cutscene was made. The cutscene with proper animation can be seen at E3 2002. It uses one of the unused lines, too.
Diagon Alley#
Everytime Diagon Alley is loaded, it load an unused file called "CS_DA.geo" that contain 6 cutscene from really early development of Chamber of Secrets. All corresponding dialogue have long since been removed from the game assets (however found in the xbox released and were added in the editing to the video).
The cutscene also made use of the unused character, Hag.
The conversation was not fully recorded by the actors, as it switches mid-scene to placeholder actor takes.
The cutscene dialogue with the twin brother and the short cutscene of ginny and ron calling Harry are still in the game code for being trigger by an objects but are not set to any objects.
Watch on YouTube
The Leaky Cauldron#
The finest pub in London has in "CS_LKY" a lot of unused cutscene, mostly close-up character dialogue, while Tom the barman use two of them in the game, one of them is unused. it also include Hagrid and Dedalus Diggle, where you get to see more closely, his stanky eye.
Watch on YouTube
DADA#
There are several alternative versions of the cutscene where Harry returns from the Experliarmus challenge. They are curiously much shorter, stopping at the moment when Lockart gives out the points. The only difference between these versions is that Lockart gives out different numbers of points between 5 and 60, in the final version he only gives out 40. And the sound of the painting is missing.
Gambol and Japes#
Three cutscenes file exist for Gambol and Japes under the name CS_LVGAJ_01e.geo , CS_LVGAJ_02e.geo and CS_GJ , they are however all empty.
Unused Text#
Developer text#
Who have I missed? I must have missed someone
Found in the texts of the game credits: we hope for their sake they didn't forget anyone!
System#
Potion Ingredient - Flobberworm Mucus
Potion Ingredient - Doxy Egg
Potion Ingredient - Salamander Skin
Potion Ingredient - Billywig Sting
Potion Ingredient - Firecrab Shell
Potion Ingredient - Mandrake Root
Potions class with Snape would have been present in the game as also implied by Ron in Diagon Alley. Interestingly, most of the creature mentioned here are unused (except for the firecrab). You could have possibly collect the ingredient from them. That will be re-done in the Philosopher's stone a year later
Herbology Class
In the "langtext" file, the Herbology greenhouse was once referred to as a classroom, a class criminally absent from the game despite the original book or the movie scene, the 3D model of the teacher still exists as seen above.
Hagrid's Hut (Locked)
The text indicating where Harry is contains this text for Hagrid's hut, but the door has no interaction, unlike in the PS2 version.
Main Gates (Locked)
There is no door named as such.
Gringotts Bank (Closed)
It is not possible to enter Gringotts through Diagon Alley even though the bank itself is attached to the location. During development, the Gringotts bank was accessible from there, and even with the mention of being "closed" the door has no interaction implemented on the scene, so this text is never seen.
Exit to Diagon Alley
There is no place to "exit" Diagon Alley in a literal way.
Exit to Knockturn Alley
This place is not represented in the final game unlike the movie.
To fill your Potion Phial you must first select it from your Remembrall and press B.
Well done! Now to use the Wiggenweld you must make sure that you select a full Potion Phial and then press B to heal you to full health!
In the actual game, the vial stays in your inventory, and Harry will drink it by himself.
Prologue#
Harry Potter lived at number four Privet Drive with his horrid Uncle and Aunt and their vile son, Dudley. Harry was often locked in his room and even though he was actually a wizard, he couldn't magic himself to freedom. One evening, a house-elf called Dobby appeared ... Dobby warned Harry not to return to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry ... Harry Potter must not return to Hogwarts! There is a plot to make most terrible things happen. if Harry oter goes back to Hogwarts, he will be in mortal danger. Dobby disappeared and shortly after, Harry's best friend, Ron Weasley, and his brothers, Fred and George, arrived in a flying Ford Anglia to rescue Harry from his prison. They flew him to their home, the Burrow, which is where , on a warm evening in late August, our story continues ...
Text for an unused introductory cutscene narrating the events of the story up until the game starts at the Burrow. The text is similar to the opening cutscenes of the PC and PS1 versions, but not identical to either. In the final versions of the PS2, GameCube and Xbox console adaptations, the game starts directly with Harry, Ron and his brothers arriving at the Burrow, with no introductory cutscene. Apart from this text, there is no data about this cutscene.
Dear Harry...#
Dear Harry - Mind yourself with those Puffapods, they can explode very easily. I once threw one away and the explosion turned my wheelbarrow right around. Hagrid.
Found among advices texts... Hagrid's message could have been in the PC or PS1 version, but it's unknown in which circumstance this message could have been prompted since the first time we see the Puffapods is in the Whomping Willow's area.
Uncleared Hermione's instruction#
During Night 2, Hermione has enough nerves to ask you to risk your life for a book. But it seems the text for these were changed a lot during development following major level change and re-decision from the editor. In the actual game, Hermione does not detail that much but was supposed to at one point. These captions reveal that the stealth library level was really different and had two blue griffon statues around it, sometimes the statues were of blue lions and sometime the door itself is blue for some reason. sv_her_AUGPU_0001 and sv_hry_AUGPU_0018 are used in the PS2 version.

Who knows? It is possible these were temporary strings to ensure no Wizard Card ended up using the wrong text string, when the later cards would display in the Folio Magi. This string appears 10 times.

Lumos/Nox spell collected.
Diffindo spell collected.
Expelliarmus spell collected.
Skurge spell collected.

Incendio spell collected.
Avifors spell collected.
Flipendo spell collected.
PAUSED_CONTINUE
You collected a Spell.
You collected a Wizard Card!
You collected one Knut!
You collected one Galleon!
A packet of Belching Powder!
The first line in this suggests the Lumos spell was to be toggleable, as Nox is the canon incantation to disspell Lumos. However, the spell was ultimately made to dissipate after a short time, making Nox unnecessary. The latter lines here are generic-styled pickup text strings, while the PAUSED_CONTINUE string is what it is, for pausing the game.
The other strings after it are never displayed; the first is plainly obvious, no text is displayed when picking up a Wizard Card at the moment it vanishes in Harry's hand, and neither Knuts nor Galleons appear in Diagon Alley.
You collected your potion kit; you how have 1 phial to collect potions with!
You collected a phial of Wiggenweld!
A packet of Belching Powder!
You collected a Book!
You collected a Bertie Botts Bean Bag! You can now collect 10 more beans!
You cannot collect any more Beans!
You cannot collect any more Stinkpellets!
You cannot collect any more Balloons!
You collected a Bertie Botts Bean!
Much like before, these are generic strings for collecting mandatory items for Harry's second-year adventure at Hogwarts.
- The first line regarding a potion kit suggests that Harry would keep a kit containing his set of any potions he might find, rather than just the Wiggenweld that happens to be common almost everywhere around Wizengamot.
- The book is stored amongst the strings for Ginny's lost items, indicating that Harry would have to find that as well.
- There are no Bertie Botts Bean Bags that increase the carrying capacity by ten in the final game.
- Instead of the string displaying, Harry speaks upon trying to pick up more beans than he can carry. The strings for Stinkpellets and Balloons are completely unused.
- The generic string for collecting a bean was definitely a placeholder, before the designers came up with comical reactions for picking up different flavors.
Harry's Actions#
Pickup
Sneak
Unsneak
- The former string is a non-spaced version, as the used one has the two words spaced from each other. The string can be seen in a screenshot featured in the game's European manual.
- Unsneak is done in this game by moving Harry away from the wall he is sneaking on, unlike in the PS2 version where a button press can also be done. This game's successor makes it actually possible to unsneak.
Trading Wizard Cards#
Test strings for card-trading sequences, stored in ALT.bin:
Do u like trading Wizard Cards?

Ok thanks harry - nice doing business with you!
Sorry Harry, I dont have any Wizardcards to swap!
Ahh yes I have that Wizard Card. Lets swap!
I'm sorry, I don't have that card available to swap!
Other#
The original, hand-written manuscript of Hogwarts: A History takes pride of place in this library and can only be viewed by special appointment. However, students may admire its ornate cover from below.
This text is found just after Hagrid's sweet letter. The game never mentions an "appointment" to see the book that has to be stolen in the game, it is only "cover adorned" from below. This text does appear in the PlayStation 2 version, however.
Harry's First Day
Neville's Toad
The Parselmouth
Hogwarts: A History
Avifors Challenge
The Polyjuice Potion
Incendio

The save file title from the PS2 version are stored here, this game use the map name and the day number of the save menu.
Xbox Leftover#
Button#
The texture of the Xbox version's buttons can be found fully functional in the game files under the name panel.geo and also under all its translations. It is possible to play with the Xbox buttons' textures by replacing the files, but the spells assigned to the X button will be visually assigned to B and the spells assigned to B will be visually assigned to A (spells can not be assigned to button A in the GameCube version).
Note that the texture of the buttons of this version are stored under the name panel_GC.geo.
System#
PLEASE DON'T TURN OFF YOUR XBOX CONSOLE
Miscellaneous#
- Just like the Avifors and Incendio challenges, the Defense Against The Dark Art class and the Expeliarmus challenge was once the very same map, the reason for the separation would be because the map would be too big, it is impossible to load the DADA room in the Expelliarmus challenge and vice versa. It's the reason of the unnecessarily gigantic size of the skybox.
- In FXmap.dbg, DDOFFICE_DOOR_OPEN and DDOFFICE_DOOR_CLOSE are listed as sounds, but the door of Dumbledore's office never opens like it does in the PS2 version of the game.
- In FXmap.gbg, DIAGON_GRINGOTTS_DOOR_CLOSE and DIAGON_GRINGOTTS_DOOR_OPEN are listed as sounds, it seems that Gringott's Bank should have been accessible through Diagon Alley at some point in development.
- Some stone textures used in the Experliarmus challenge has the label "FUC" in the start of their name, it could be a swear or it could be meaning "Fumos Challenge" (see unused map upon that page). It's only a theorie, but this could mean the level once existed
- In the Expelliarmus challenge, the room where you have to cast diffindo to drop the spike ball to reveal the spell chamber door is internally called Flipendo Room, you were once supposed to cast Flipendo rather than Diffindo.
- Flourish and Blotts shop have an Unused state to force Harry to have no coin or book loaded on the level. Unused Dialogue and debug string show that Molly Weasley originally would give nothing to Harry and you should have gain a coin in the Leaky Cauldron by going through the cellar to find that coin rather than Ginny's Spellotape.
- The cutscene file of the Burrow contain the glint light particle effect of the spellbook when picked up, it seems, you should have get the Flipendo spellbook in the Burrow and the cutscene for it once existed.
- The screaming skull at the Borgin and Burkes shop is called "Yorik" in the game file, as a reference of William Shakespeare's Hamlet. a skull, the character is talking to.
- The two pupils asking Harry about the snake attack at the beginning of day 3 are higher polygon version of the usual pupils with animation face mesh as well, they are stored in a dedicated file called "JacknJill" as reference of the English folk song of the same name.
Unused Screens#
Language screen#
The language selection screen is completely unused in the American version of the game, trying to access it will display 6 American flags, choosing any flag will have no effect. In the European version, only the English flag is shown to select the English dialogs.
Moreover, the screen has a duplicate present at the first address of the title screen (that means basically that the game should have asked you for your language before the EA logo appears, this does not happen in any version).
Quidditch Win Screen#

The game file has a dedicated screen of when you lose or win a game of Quidditch, it shows the screen of when you face Slytherin by default, or Gryffindor on winning. It was supposed to appear at the end of the match of Slytherin VS. Gryffindor.
Leaving this screen warps you back to the Hogwarts Grounds, font of the Quidditch door.
Phrase Display "Doodah"#

This is a Text Debug menu; it allows displaying all the text strings of the game. You just have to press the left analog stick to change the text, the D-PAD to make them scroll and L/R to change the text bank.
The Xbox version has additional details that are technically loaded in the GameCube version but curiously not displayed.

Woaw, a Dung Bomb! Smells horrible, this will come in useful for clearing crowds. |
Dung Bombs are totally unused in the game and are unusable since they were never finished. |
|
sfx_harry.snd |
Bertie Botts bean flavors. These would be reused, but also re-recorded, for the 2003 Sorcerer's Stone adaptation. |

Healing items, specifically the Pumpkin Pasty and Cauldron Cakes. |

A balloon in a box ! Great for surprising people with. |
It is strange that it specifies "in a box", the balloons do not have a box. |

sfx_harry.snd |
A chocolate frog ! It's even got a Wizard Card ! A Chocolate frog ! |
In Harry Potter, Chocolate Frogs are always sold with a card, but not in this game. An unused monologue of Harry mentioning the name "Chocolate frog card" although he never calls it that and there is no Frog. |

An Owl treat ! If I feed this to Hedwig when she's sitting on her perch, then something may happen ! An Owl Treat |
It is in his interest that this "something" happens. |

Woaw, I found a gold Galleon A gold Galleon |
Galleons, Sickles and Knuts are British wizarding money in Harry Potter. Only the Sickles appear in the final game. However, according to some text placeholder and a menu, the Galleon and other money would have been collectable at the Leaky Cauldron rather than via Molly Weasley and the barrels. |

This term I shall be teaching Duelling. Let me introduce you to my assistant Professor Snape. He tells me he knows a little about duelling himself and has sportingly agreed to help me with a short demonstration. |
Linked to the confrontation between Snape and Lockart which no longer takes place. The end of this sentence was curiously cut off during the pronunciation of "with". |

I don't think so, ' time to split up the dream team I think. Mister Malfoy, come over here |
While the dialogue "Mister Malfoy, come over here" is used in the game, the unused dialogue files in "EaSound" reveal that the first part of the dialogue which is actually a response to a lost line of Lockhart's which, according to the subtitle, says "If you'd like to partner up with Mr. Weasley-' for the duel. Both lines are used in full in the PC version, but use different takes. |

You don't want to spend to much in Knockturn Alley, dearie. |
The Hag's dialogue, the unused NPC, seems to have been scattered in the 3 versions of this game, 4 lines in the GameCube version, 2 in the PS2 version especially this one with the only difference being the echo effect. |
Unused Map#
Gringotts Bank#
The bank of Gringotts is a map exclusive to the GameCube version. To unlock it you just have to connect your GBA to the system and find the required cards on the GBA version. The portrait was completely locked on the Xbox version but it is possible to access it via cheats: the room remains unchanged because this version is the one the developers worked on, and also because the map was accessible via Diagon Alley during development.
Internal project Name#
The game is often referenced as "Egos" or "EGS".
